Derek Willis is Kentucky's first 2013 commit

By Jeff Borzello

Derek Willis’ recruitment has had several twists and turns over the past six months, and he wasn’t expected to make a new decision just yet. Last week, though, the former Purdue commit said he was ready to make an announcement.

During a press conference at Bullitt East High School (Ky.), Willis made his pledge to Kentucky.

“Kentucky was just the best fit for me and that’s why I chose them,” he said.

Willis chose the Wildcats over Purdue, Indiana and Louisville. It was reported that he narrowed his list to two schools – Purdue was the other – recently, and made up his mind a week ago.

Willis is a top-50 recruit in the class of 2013. The 6-foot-9 forward is extremely skilled and he has good inside-outside ability. He has not reached his full potential just yet, but is one of the more versatile offensive players in the class when he brings it consistently.

He is Kentucky’s first commitment in the class of 2013.

Northwestern gets pledge from Kale Abrahamson

By Jeff Borzello

Kale Abrahamson had plans to cut his list in the coming weeks. Instead, the 6-foot-7 wing decided to end his recruitment.

"I picked Northwestern because it fit everything about me," Abrahamson said. "Academically, socially and athletically, I feel like i have a chance to have a great experience."

He chose the Wildcats over Iowa, Stanford, Nebraska, Harvard and Creighton.

"It was just a combination of all the factors I was looking for," Abrahamson said.

Abrahamson is Northwestern’s second commitment in the past week, as Minnesota guard Sanjay Lumpkin announced his pledge on Friday. The two join Alex Olah in the Wildcats’ 2012 class.

Abrahamson is a very good shooter who has deep range and can get hot from the perimeter. His size enables him to be a matchup problem for smaller wings, and he knows how to use his body when it comes to finishing at the rim.

Notebook: James Robinson nearing decision

By Jeff Borzello

While other top-100 prospects might be waiting out the process, James Robinson is ready to get it over with.

“I’m going to end it as soon as possible, hopefully,” Robinson said.

The 6-foot-3 point guard from DeMatha (Md.) is considering four schools: Pittsburgh, Virginia, Miami (Fl.) and Notre Dame.

“Each of them have coaches that have a history of winning, developing players and better young men,” Robinson said.

Robinson, who ranks No. 88 in CBSSports.com's Top 100, is a physical point guard who knows how to play the game and is a flat-out winner. He’s not going to blow you away with his quickness, but he uses his body well and is crafty with his finishes in the lane. Robinson is adept at knocking down mid-range jumpers near the foul line, and he controls tempo.

He hopes to have a decision made by the end of the month.

“[Waiting] for the right time,” Robinson said. “I haven’t really had the chance to sit down with my family and go in detail about it.”
