Josh Hart gets bigger, expands his game

INTERESTED TEAMS:

WASHINGTON D.C. – For many players, shooting outside jumpers and finishing at the rim is all that matters. For Josh Hart, it makes him want to expand his game.

“My coach said I was always settling for a 3 or dunking,” Hart said at the Gonzaga DC Classic. “I need that in-between game.”

Hart, a 6-foot-4 guard from Sidwell Friends (D.C.), is one of the top shooting guards in the mid-Atlantic region for the class of 2013. He has gotten stronger and bigger since the summer, giving him another asset to use offensively. He constantly attacked the rim with aggression, despite taking a few hard spills. On the defensive end, Hart also showed good athleticism, contesting shots and grabbing boards.

In addition to his mid-range game, Hart is also working on his ball-handling ability. Once he irons out the wrinkles offensively, he is going to be a big-time scorer.

As a result, several schools are in the mix for Hart. He holds offers from Georgetown, North Carolina State, VCU, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Penn State and Xavier. Moreover, Georgia Tech, Maryland, DePaul, Villanova and Saint Joseph’s are all showing interest.

“I want to play up-tempo, and a good coaching staff,” Hart said when asked what he was looking for in a school.

He is not ready to make a decision in the near future.

“I’m focusing on school,” Hart said. “I’m just letting everything happen.”

Notebook: Rodney Purvis set to announce Friday

By Jeff Borzello

Rodney Purvis has had a whirlwind of a recruitment as anyone in the class of 2012. It looks like it will soon come to an end, though.

Avie Lester, Purvis’ high school coach at Upper Room Christian (N.C.), informed the Raleigh News & Observer that Purvis would be announcing his decision at a press conference on Friday.

The paper said he will be choosing between North Carolina State, Louisville, Connecticut and VCU; however, it seems that Louisville and VCU are no longer recruiting Purvis.

Signs point to North Carolina State, but we will find out for sure (or for now?) on Friday. Purvis had previously committed to Louisville before reopening his recruitment. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard is ranked No. 15 in the class of 2012 by CBSSports.com.

Jevon Thomas to Dayton

Former St. John’s pledge Jevon Thomas has made his next choice, committing to Dayton on Wednesday afternoon.

Multiple sources confirmed the commitment to CBSSports.com.

Thomas also considered Seton Hall before choosing the Flyers. The 5-foot-11 point guard fits a much-needed position for head coach Archie Miller, as Thomas is one of the fastest players in the country. He can get to end-to-end extremely quick, and is fearless when going to the rim.

Thomas joins Jalen Robinson in Dayton’s 2012 class.

Houston gets another commitment

Houston head coach James Dickey continues to make waves on the recruiting trail.

On Wednesday, sleeper big man Valentine Izundu popped for the Cougars.

Izundu burst onto the scene this summer, demonstrating his tremendous shot-blocking ability and vast potential. He is long and athletic, and will make an immediate impact on the defensive end of the floor.
