How to Play:

It's simple, really. Look at the sports-related pictures above, and give us your funniest caption for any or all of them. You can write as many captions for each as you would like.

The contest runs daily, Monday-Thursday. Each day's contest will usually be posted by noon ET, and will usually end around 11 p.m. ET. If I decide that your caption is the funniest or most clever submitted for that picture, it will be declared a winner.

Winning captions will be announced when the contest ends. There will be one winner for each picture, and also one winner for the person who can string together the 5 best captions all with the same theme.

You will be awarded one point for each winning caption that you post. You will see a running tally on the scoreboard, which will be posted at the beginning and end of each day. At the end of each month a champion is declared, and we shower that user in praise and adulation! We add his screenname to the Wall-O-Fame, and then we start everyone's score back at 0.

This contest is just for fun, and there are no real prizes at this time. Who thinks they can make us laugh? :)

Sports Appreciation Day!

What is Sports Appreciation Day? To understand the what, you need to know about the why -- starting with an Onion headline from last July: Barry Bonds home-run scandal somehow becomes feel-good sports story of summer.

When I first saw that, I had to laugh -- because if I didn't, I would've cried. Barry Bonds' march into history was, though under the cloud of steroid suspicion, tame compared to other stories from the summer of 2007.

Referee Tim Donaghy pleaded guilty in a gambling case, casting doubt on the validity of NBA wins and losses. Michael Vick admitted in federal court that he bankrolled a dogfighting ring. Pacman Jones' odyssey of incarceration included being charged in connection with a strip club melee that ended in a hail of gunfire.

Pro wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife and son, then hanged himself. During Week 1 of the NFL season, Bills tight end Kevin Everett sustained a spinal cord injury. The fact that he would walk again made the image of his motionless body no less terrifying.

During this time, perhaps you asked yourself, Why did I ever like sports in the first place? I know I did.

That takes care of the why. As for the what -- S.A.D. is therapy. One year removed from a nauseating summer, it's a way of validating -- or simply justifying -- our love for sports by going back to where it all began.

Therapy can be helped along by a good support group. Ours is great: 13 columnists, numerous staffers from CBSSports.com, six CBS broadcasters, and four professional athletes... and you. Many of you. Let the healing begin!

-- Lyle Crouse, Assistant Managing Editor

Everyone got that?

Basically, we're putting together a series of real-life stories about becoming fans. Pick the sport or team that you love most, and write a blog about how it all started. The best entries will be featured on CBSSports.com Sports Appreciation Day (Aug. 20). Blogs should be a minimum of 400 words. Here's an example of what we're looking for. When you're done, please post the link here.

I've promised everyone here a great response from the Community, so thanks for helping out!

#1 Geographically challenged fake gangsters.
#2 This guys look can be explained by the white residue on his "sniffing hand".
#3 Lime green, wrinkly pajamas buttoned only at the top... check. Matching purse to sneak in smoked turkey leg and extra draw string for when first gives way... check. Literate friend to help you do "the readins" and make sure your sign is the right way... aw, crap.
#4 What were you... I mean... Would ya think!?
#5 Dear Hornets,

Great job with the pregame entertainment! Nothing says NBA and New Orleans like a Kiss impersonator! That makes perfect sense.

Regards,

The Utah Jazz and "Clutch" the bear
