At first glance Maryland's Greivis Vasquez is a show-boating piece of Eurotrash.
At second glance, strike half of that. He is from Venezuela.
Me? I like him. Contrasted against the frumpy Gary Williams all that "Fear the Turtle" crap, Vasquez is refreshing, although I'm waiting for him to grab his ankle and writhe in pain for no reason just like European soccer players.
Damn, forgot again that he is from Venezuela.
GV did drop the biggest bomb of Friday here when he called Memphis' Conference USA "pretty much questionable. They don't have tough games."
If that's controversial then shut down Conference USA. It is questionable. Anyway, here are a few pearls from the Terps guard who will go against Memphis on Saturday in Kansas City.
Q: How did you develop your game?
GV: "My father used to take me to professional games in Venezuela. I started to have some interest in the game and
then I started to take it serious, to the point I wanted to go to college here ..."
Ten years ago I never thought I was going to be here so it's pretty cool."
Q: How do you think your conference stakes up against Conference USA?
GV: "I didn't mean to disrespect their conference. We have tough games night in, night out. Every team can beat any team ... Their conference, I mean, you can now it's tough but I don't think as tough as our conference."
Q: How much do you realize that maybe opposing fans just don't particularly like you?
GV: "Sometimes people question me an judge me for the way I play, but I keep going like that. I need to use my emotion to be able to play hard and well."
