Former FIU recruit commits to Auburn

Cedrick McAfee made headlines a few weeks back when he committed to Florida International.

He made more headlines Sunday by committing to ... Auburn.

The 6-foot-2 guard from Melrose High in Memphis pledged his allegiance during a weekend visit with first-year Auburn coach Tony Barbee, a former Memphis assistant who still has strong ties to the city. McAfee chose Auburn over Baylor and FIU. Scout.com ranks him 99th in the Class of 2011.

Auburn hires UTEP's Barbee

UTEP coach Tony Barbee has accepted an offer to become Auburn's next coach, CBSSports.com has confirmed.

An official announcement is expected Thursday.

Barbee spent four years at UTEP and led the Miners to a Conference USA title and NCAA tournament berth this season. He was an assistant under John Calipari at Memphis before accepting the UTEP job. Some obvious candidates to replace Barbee at UTEP are Sam Houston State's Bob Marlin, former USC coach Tim Floyd and former Kentucky and UTEP coach Billy Gillispie.

ECU to hire Lebo

The East Carolina Board of Trustees is expected to approve late Monday the hiring of former Auburn coach Jeff Lebo as the school's next basketball coach, CBSSports.com has confirmed.

A formal introduction could come Tuesday.

Auburn fired Lebo earlier this month after six seasons at the school.

This development fills one opening in Conference USA, but two remain. Houston coach Tom Penders has been forced into resignation after six seasons despite taking the Cougars to the 2010 NCAA tournament. Former Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie is a possibility to replace him. Meantime, UCF is conducting a search to find a replacement for Kirk Speraw, who was fired last week. Appalachian State's Buzz Peterson has emerged as a serious candidate at UCF at least partly because of his relationship with Michael Jordan. One of Jordan's sons, Marcus Jordan, plays for UCF. Also worth noting is that the school just signed an apparel deal with Nike.

Report: Lebo out at Auburn

Auburn will fire Jeff Lebo after six seasons, The Birmingham News reported Friday.

The paper cited "people familiar with the decision-making process."

This development doesn't come as a suprise considering Lebo had a career record of 35-61 in SEC games. Plus, the Tigers are moving into a new $90-million arena next season, and officials want a coach with a clean slate to open the building the same way Oregon wants a new coach to open its new building.

Lebo's buyout is reportedly $1.5 million.
