Five for Friday column

I'm going to start doing a Five for Friday column every, um, Friday.

Hoiberg already exciting ISU fans

Iowa State's hiring of Fred Hoiberg has done exactly what I thought it would do: Excite the base.

(And that was the point of my Sarah Palin comparison , by the way, not that Hoiberg is inexperienced or dumb or whatever, but that Jamie Pollard picked him for the same reason John McCain picked Sarah Palin, because though it might look crazy to the outside world, the people dedicated to the cause will rally around it in an otherwise unattainable way. But I digress ...)

I watched the Wednesday press conference online.

It seemed to go over well.

Now word out of Iowa State is that season ticket sales should spike for no other reason than that fans are willing to do more than they might otherwise do because they don't want to see their favorite son fail. So in that regard, this is working. And that's why I didn't trash the hire the way some trashed the hire, because I recognize why this was done, and I don't totally disagree with the reasoning.

Will it work in the longrun?

Like I said in the column, I'm not sure.

But in the short-term, it's a home run.

And, of course, ISU has already assembled a special Hoiberg video.

Former Iowa State star Fred Hoiberg has accepted an offer to become the Cyclones' next men's basketball coach, ABC5 Sports in Iowa reported Tuesday.
