The Notre Dame basketball team left today -- after a week of practices -- for Ireland, where Mike Brey and his players will enjoy the scenery and play six exhibitions. Among them are games in the inaugural Emerald Hoops International Series against the senior national teams from Iceland, Poland and Ireland, some of which will be broadcast on national television in the country.
"The great national teams are obviously in Bejing, but they're still going to be good teams," Brey told me last week by phone. "Poland is big and Ireland is coached by Jim Larranaga's son, Jay, who played for him at Bowling Green."
Jay coaches Ireland?
"Yeah," Brey answered. "He's loading up. Anybody who is even close to being Irish is being put on that team."
The International Series is expected to continue next year.
Another NCAA program will be invited to participate.
