Zeller set for surgery, probably out for the year

North Carolina freshman Tyler Zeller is scheduled to have surgery today on a broken left wrist and will likely miss the rest of the season, his brother Luke Zeller told CBSSports.com on Wednesday.

"I feel terrible for him," said Luke, a senior at Notre Dame. "Last time I talked to him they were trying to get a surgeon, and they're pretty sure he's going to be out of the year."

Zeller was injured in Tuesday's 77-58 win over Kentucky on a hard foul from Ramon Harris. Luke Zeller said he spoke to his brother after the game, and though he knew it was serious he thought it might not cost him the season.

"I think he thought he'd be fine," Luke said. "He said, 'It's my left wrist. I can put a splint on it and it's not a big deal.'"

But Luke said Tyler met with the UNC staff early Wednesday and realized the severity of the injury. According to Luke, the wrist is believed to be broken in at least two places, "and they're talking about pins and all that."

"It's tough," Luke added. "But he's in good spirits. He knows he's just a freshman and that he's got a lot of time to work on things."

Tyler Zeller started the first two games for UNC in Tyler Hansbrough's place.

He scored 18 points in the opener and had two points when he was injured Tuesday night.
