Greenberg agrees to new deal with Virginia Tech

Seth Greenberg has agreed to terms on a new deal with Virginia Tech that effectively eliminates him as a candidate at St. John's, the school announced Friday.

“I am pleased that Coach Greenberg will continue his mission at Virginia Tech and will lead the Hokies for the next six seasons,” said Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver. “He has done an outstanding job in creating a program and environment that has the Hokies competitive year in and year out in the ACC. Under Coach Greenberg’s tutelage, the Hokies have the fourth-best regular season record in the ACC and he has created one of the best programs in the country.”

Greenberg has spent seven seasons at Virginia Tech.

He has a 132-94 record in that span.

St. John's now talking to Skinner, Greenberg

St. John's search for Norm Roberts' successor continues with the school set to interview two ACC coaches.

Multiple sources have said Boston College's Al Skinner will interview, and the New York Times is reporting that Virginia Tech's Seth Greenberg will also meet with St. John's officials. Greenberg has been perceived as a candidate since Roberts was fired. He's clearly the top target now that Florida's Billy Donovan has rejected overtures and Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt has passed on the opportunity to move to the Big East school.

Roberts coached six seasons at St. John's.

He's now serving as an analyst for CBSSports.com on March Madness on Demand broadcasts.

Report: St. John's will not retain Roberts

St. John's will buy Norm Roberts out of his contract to avoid bringing him back to the Big East school for a seventh season, the New York Post reported Thursday morning.

The report comes a day after the Red Storm lost in the second round of the Big East tournament.

They are 17-15 this season and hoping for a NIT bid.

Roberts' record through six seasons is 81-100.

According to The Post, St. John's officials are interested in Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg, a New York native on the verge of taking the Hokies to the NCAA tournament for the second time. Virginia Tech is the No. 4 seed in the ACC tournament. The Hokies will play either Wake Forest or Miami on Friday afternoon.
