Binghamton player uninterested in going to trial

Miladin Kovacevic has pulled a Roman Polanski.

Or something like that.

You might remember me mentioning Kovacevic in a blog last month. He's the Binghamton basketball player who was jailed and charged with felony assault after an April 30 attack at a bar left  a man named Bryan Steinhauer in a coma. It's a sad story that has now turned strange. The guys at the America Least blog sent a note today informing me that Kovacevic was released from jail when his parents posted a $100,000 cash bond last week. Now, police have told a Binghamton newspaper they believe Kovacevic and his parents have fled to their native Serbia to escape the charges.

Meantime, Steinhauer remains hospitalized and unconscious.

Like I said, it's a sad and strange story.

Binghamton player puts Binghamton student in coma

We always hear about athletes behaving badly. But one story that has received no national coverage -- at least none that I can find -- is the story of Binghamton basketball player Miladin Kovacevic, who has been charged with second-degree assault after kicking another student so many times inside of a local bar that the student suffered serious head injuries and remains in critical condition.

The student, Bryan Steinhauer, is in a drug-induced coma.

Kovacevic  appeared in 18 games during the 2006-07 season and missed all of last season with an injury. He has been banned from campus until the matter is resolved, and what sparked the altercation remains under investigation.
