Billy D thinks Sullinger is a 'monster'

That latenight game at FedExForum was fun, but the prize of this ongoing 24 hours of college basketball tips at 6 p.m. ET when No. 4 Ohio State visits No. 9 Florida. It should be great, if only because of the opportunity to see Florida's big and experienced frontline of Vernon Macklin and Alex Tyus try to slow Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger.

By now, you know what I think of Sullinger.

Here's what Florida coach Billy Donovan thinks of Sullinger:

"I think he's a monster," Donovan told me this weekend. "I think he's great."

Sullinger got 19 points and 14 rebounds in OSU's season-opening win over North Carolina A&T. I'm not necessarily predicting similar numbers tonight, but if the 6-foot-9 forward produces them it would pretty much stop everybody from asking why I named him the CBSSports.com Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year.

No surprise in Big Ten media poll

The Big Ten announced Thursday that media members who cover the league have voted Michigan State as the preseason favorite and MSU point guard Kalin Lucas as the Player of the Year. My ballot would've featured Michigan State as the favorite and Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger as the Player of the Year. But Lucas -- a veteran from a team that's made two straight Final Fours -- is certainly the more conventional pick for Player of the Year. So the announcement doesn't really come as a surprise.

Worth noting: Ohio State was picked second, Purdue third.

So the Big Ten media only dropped the Boilermakers one spot because of Robbie Hummel's injury.

Again, it's not what I'd do.

But it's certainly a reasonable way to vote.

If the Wooden Award would allow it ...

The John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 does not include freshmen, but that hasn't stopped folks from asking which freshmen I would've included if allowed. My answer: North Carolina's Harrison Barnes, Baylor's Perry Jones, Kentucky's Brandon Knight and Duke's Kyrie Irving are obvious candidates, and Kansas' Josh Selby and Kentucky's Enes Kanter would certainly be on the list if I knew for sure that they'd be eligible.

Another no-brainer: Ohio State's Jared Sullinger.

In fact, my guess is that Sullinger has the biggest impact of all freshmen.

Kevin Love averaged 17.5 points and 10.6 rebounds in his one season at UCLA.

Five bucks says Sullinger posts similar numbers and is named Big Ten Freshman and Big Ten Player of the Year.
