accnodefense's bracketology 03/10/2008
I will start putting in complete brackets on Thursday. For now I only have time to do a Field of 65.
Remember, bracket is generated using predictions of future results.
Field of 65(* = Projected Conference Champ, Bold = Automatic Qualifier)
1s: Memphis*, North Carolina*, Tennessee*, UCLA*
2s: Kansas*, Texas, Georgetown*, Wisconsin*
3s: Duke, Stanford, Louisville, Xavier*
4s: Connecticut, Notre Dame, Purdue, Vanderbilt
5s: Washington State, Marquette, Drake*, Michigan State
6s: Gonzaga*, Butler*, Mississippi State, Indiana
7s: USC, Oklahoma, BYU, Clemson
8s: UNLV*, Miami FL, Pittsburgh, Kansas State
9s: Arkansas, Arizona, Baylor, West Virginia
10s: Kentucky, Kent State*, Saint Mary's CA, Texas A&M
11s: South Alabama, Massachuetts, Arizona State, Davidson*
12s: Mississippi, Dayton, George Mason*, Western Kentucky*
13s: Utah State*, Stephen F. Austin*, New Mexico, Virginia Commonwealth
14s: Oral Roberts*, Belmont*, Winthrop*, Cornell*
15s: CA-Santa Barbara*, Maryland Baltimore County*, Rider*, American*
16s: Morgan State*, Austin Peay*, Portland State*, Mount St. Mary's*, Alabama State*
LAST 4 IN:
Virginia Commonwealth(65) - Barely in. Taken over Illinois State because they won their conference outright by two games.
New Mexico(64) - Their last 12 games helps them get in, despite losing to UNLV on their home floor in the MWC semis.
Dayton(63) - A strong Atlantic 10 tournament showing with the return of Chris Wright will help. Also, out of my final 16 bubble teams competing for 10 spots, they had the best record vs. the RPI Top 100 by far.
Mississippi(62) - Show me a team with a better record vs. the RPI Top 50/Top 100.
LAST 4 OUT:
Illinois State(66) - VCU gets the nod over them. They needed to stay competitive with Drake and didn't.
Temple(67) - I'll put them in if they make the Atlantic 10 final. I think they have a great chance to do that, but until they do I just can't put them in as much as I want to.
UAB(68) - Losing by 40 points never helps. Even if they make the C-USA final(which I am projecting them to) I don't think it will be enough.
Syracuse(69) - Too little, too late. Must beat Georgetown. Playing them extremely close may not do it.
NEXT 4 OUT:
Oregon(70) - Too little too late like Syracuse. Must beat Washington State.
Villanova(71) - Loses an elimination game vs. Syracuse
Ohio State(72) - Won't beat Michigan State again. If they do, they are in my field.
Saint Joseph's(73) - Must make Atlantic 10 final. They have an easy path to the semifinals, but they have to beat Xavier again to complete the job.
Remember, bracket is generated using predictions of future results.

LAST 4 IN
Illinois State (23-9) : MVC runner up and solid finish gets them in
Dayton (23-10) : Getting to 8-8 in Atlantic 10 and making Atlantic 10 final with Chris Wright puts them back in
UAB (24-10) : With the bubble being weak, why not a 12-4 Conference USA team who finished strong?
Arizona (18-14) : Gets in on SOS alone.
LAST 4 OUT
Maryland (19-13) : Not enough good wins to get in
Texas A&M (21-11) : 7-9 Big 12 finish, Big 12 quarterfinal loss and nothing good in non-conference hurts
Temple (18-12) : I can't put in Temple if I don't put in Kentucky. Both had poor non-conferences with 11-5 conference finishes.
Oregon (18-13) : Might not have wanted to lose to Oakland
NEXT 4 OUT
Rhode Island (22-9) : Gets to 8-8 in Atlantic 10 but loses in Atlantic 10 quarters to UMass
Kentucky (17-13) : Too little too late
Florida (21-11) : Four straight losses to end the year
Houston (23-9) : No quality wins
FAQ
Q: You have four Atlantic 10 teams? You're crazy!
A: Not with my predicted Atlantic 10 tournament scenario. Saint Joseph's wins the auto bid. Dayton makes the Atlantic 10 final with Chris Wright. Xavier and Massachusetts get at-large bids and both make the Atlantic 10 semis.
Q: Why is Memphis your overall #1 seed?
A: Only one loss
Q: Why is Xavier a 3 seed?
A: I have them losing to Saint Joseph's twice before Selection Sunday. They would be lucky to hold on to that 3 seed if that were to happen.
Q: BUTLER A 6? DRAKE A 7? WHAT?
A: Drake won't finish strong(loss in MVC semis), and Butler has not beaten any teams in my projected field.
Q: How do you predict conference tournaments?
A: I don't use a computer, I use my mind.

A: I don't use a computer, I use my mind.

accnodefense's bracketology 02/29/2008
Gah, the bubble is SO weak. In years past its trying to find the 34 best at-large teams. This year, its trying to find out the teams who suck the least. Will someone try to play their ways in rather than play their ways out? You think that a team had played their way out of the field with a loss(see: New Mexico) but with EVERY bubble team seeming to lose, the bar for at-large bids is lower and lower so those teams find their way back into the field. It's like a game of limbo - how low can we go? So if you think this bracketology sucks, too bad. Until the bubble clears up(IF it ever clears up) I am just going to take who I think is most deserving.

My bracketology credentials
I have had people say that I have no idea what I am doing when making my bracket projections.
I have been doing this since 2003, and have been quite successful. The reason mine seem so different than the rest on the Bracket Matrix and others like Lunardi/Parrish is because I predict teams future records. Once March closes in and we near Selection Sunday, my brackets begin to reflect everyone else's because there are less games to predict and trends are easier to establish.
The past two years have been hard to predict, as predicting 62/65 teams seems to be the status quo for the bracketologies around the internet. This is mostly because some strange and unexpected at-large teams are being put into the field the past two years, such as Air Force and Utah State in 2006 and Illinois/Arkansas in 2007 that no one really could have logically expected(even though I correctly predicted Utah State getting in in 2006).
How I have done in the past:
2007
62/65 teams correctly predicted.
Missed: Illinois, Arkansas, and Purdue
Incorrectly bracketed: Drexel, Appalachian State, and Missouri State
Seeds Right: 30/65
Locations Right: 14/65
Matchups Right: 3/33 - Oregon vs. Miami (Ohio), Georgetown vs. Belmont, UCLA vs. Weber State
2006
63/65 teams correctly predicted
Missed: Texas A&M and Air Force
Incorrectly bracketed: Missouri State and Hofstra
Seeds Right: 37/65
Locations Right: 18/65
Matchups Right: 4/33 - Gonzaga vs. Xavier, Duke vs. Southern, Kentucky vs. UAB, LSU vs. Iona
2005
65/65 teams correctly predicted
One of the only known brackets to have included Northern Iowa
Seeds Right: 40/65
Locations Right: 21/65
Matchups Right: 5/33 - Syracuse vs. Vermont, Washington vs. Montana, Connecticut vs. Central Florida, Arizona vs. Utah State, Alabama vs. Wisconsin Milwaukee
2004
64/65 teams correctly predicted
Missed: Washington
Incorrectly bracketed: Utah State
Seeds Right: 38/65
Locations Right: 19/65
Matchups Right: 2/33 - Wake Forest vs. VCU, Duke vs. Alabama State
2003
65/65 teams correctly predicted
Seeds Right: 40/65
Locations Right: 16/65
Matchups Right: 4/33 - Wisconsin vs. Weber State, Kansas vs. Utah State, Oklahoma vs. South Carolina State, LSU vs. Purdue
