Bib's College Pick 'em: Round 5

Alright here's how this is going to go. I'll come up with 12 games of interest every week for you all to choose from. You'll pick the winners and post them here or on the thread, whether you post them here or not, I will add them to the blog to make them easy to keep up with.

This week's games:

(rankings reflect BCS standings)

#20 Georgia Tech at #19 North Carolina

#11 Ohio State at #24 Northwestern

#14 Georgia at Kentucky (6-3)

#1 Alabama at #16 LSU

#21 California at #7 USC

Notre Dame (5-3) at Boston College (5-3)

Lousiville (5-3) at Pittsburgh (6-2)

Kansas (6-3) at Nebraska (5-4)

Stanford (5-4) at Oregon (6-3)

Virginia (5-4) at Wake Forest (5-3)

Cincinnati (6-2) at #25 West Virginia

#9 Oklahoma St. at #2 Texas Tech

My Picks: 7-5

I'm going to go with The Heels because I like their aggressive, athletic, fast D against this run attack. Tech is going to need to throw to win

Northwestern is more explosive on offense, but Ohio State has the better defense, so the safe bet is Ohio State

well they both got stomped on by Florida but Kentucky played Bama closer. . .everybody picked Georgia so to be safe I should too right? yeah, but don't be shocked if this is a close one

no wait honestly, I want bama to lose, they've slowed down as of late but Saban can get them pumped, and I think he will for this one. . .ah, screw it I was going to go with bama but I'm goin LSU. already got me goin with Ohio state when I don't want to. when they lose I want to have called it. . .because they will lose

since that Oregon St. game the D has only allowed 0 or 10 points to their opponents. . .and that won't be enough

BC is on a slide. they both lost to UNC but UNC dominated BC whereas the ND-UNC game was a close one.

both played Syracuse, and both games were surprisingly close, Pitt won by 10 and Louisville lost by 7...so there ya go

. . .point is, I like Nebraska better, they have a better defense it appears

They played better against Maryland and Miami, although they got dominated by Duke. . . wake got dominated by Maryland more recently

I was leaning toward WV and then I saw that Uconn handled Cinci, and got handled by the mountaineers so. . .

Alright I said Tech would lose once they got some national recognition, now they're #2 and everybody is talking about them. . .down they go

Bib's College Pick 'em: Round 4

Alright here's how this is going to go. I'll come up with 12 games of interest every week for you all to choose from. You'll pick the winners and post them here or on the thread, whether you post them here or not, I will add them to the blog to make them easy to keep up with.

This week's games:

(rankings reflect BCS standings)

Pittsburgh at Notre Dame

Northwestern at #17 Minnesota

Miami at Virginia

West Virginia at #25 UConn

Kansas State at Kansas

#24 Oregon at California

Duke at Wake Forest

#15 Florida State at Georgia Tech

#8 Florida at #6 Georgia

#1 Texas at #7 Texas Tech

Nebraska at #4 Oklahoma

Iowa at Illinois

My Picks:

Reaaaaaaaally tough one for me, SHOULD be a great game, I think that Notre Dame has a better defense though so I give them the W

I looked for a reason to pick Northwestern and I found one, but found more reasons to pick the Gophers, one of which being the head to head with Indiana that the two teams share, and another is that Minnesota has a better defense...and Northwestern's QB likes to turn the ball over

man, another tough one. Both teams like to turn the ball over. defensively Virginia has played better than Miami recently (17ppg allowed in last three ACC games compared to 27) but Miami has been much better on offense (35 ppg in last 3  ACC games compared to 25) ACC has been unpredictable, and this game comes out even when you average points allowed and points scored for the teams (26-26) so I'll give the edge to Miami, I think they have better special teams

only common opponent is Rutgers, but I see how that worked out for me last week...with that said though, I think WV is more explosive on offense, their losses, colorado game just looked bad, and we won't talk about ECU...I just don't think Donald Brown is going to beat WV on his own

the battle of the beaten, lets see 3 common big 12 opponents. Texas tech: Kansas 21-63 loss, State 28-58 loss. Oklahoma: Kansas 31-45 loss, State 35-58 loss. and finally Colorado: Kansas 30-14 Win, State 13-14 loss. Now state played better against Tech but the Colorado comparison pushes me over the edge here...oh, well I keep the streak of unanimous picks going

agh! alright here we go. Three common opponents...AZ state: Oregon 54-20 W, Cal 24-14 W. UCLA: Oregon 31-24 W, Cal 41-20. and Wash St.: Oregon 63-14 W, Cal 66-3 W. Mixed results here. Oregon was more impressive against AZ state, but Cal more impressive against UCLA......I'm going to go with Cal because I can. I'm playing catch up as it is

Wake is like grandpa used to be before the blue pills came out....they can't score . . .yeah that was a stretch

same reason I picked them last week, they're more explosive on offense

I'm gonna go with the dogs, they seem to be a little behind defensively, and maybe even slightly offensively if you look at the cumulative performance, but I think the offense has righted itself and will get it done against the Gators

no common opponent, but the Red Raiders have not played the quality of Big 12 opponent that the Longhorns have with similar results

you know what, I'll go against the grain here. Oklahoma has let every Big 12 opponent they've played score against them, it's bound to bite them in a game where it's not expected

last game for both teams was Wisconsin. Iowa handled them, Illinois got handled by them

Bib's College Pick 'em: Round 3

Alright here's how this is going to go. I'll come up with 12 games of interest every week for you all to choose from. You'll pick the winners and post them here or on the thread, whether you post them here or not, I will add them to the blog to make them easy to keep up with.

This week's games:

#23 Boston College at North Carolina

#3 Penn State at #10 Ohio State

Illinois at Wisconsin

#8 Texas Tech at #19 Kansas

Wake Forest at Miami

Cincinnati at UConn

#7 Oklahoma St at #1 Texas

#9 Georgia at #11 LSU

#14 South Florida at Louisville

Virginia at #21 Georgia Tech

Virginia Tech at #24 Florida State

Colorado at #16 Missouri

My Picks: 5-7

alright the first time around this got erased so my analysis isn't going to be so great

the Eagles have been consistent all year, common opponent is v tech...BC won, NC lost and NC had it's best playmaker in that game, they won't in this one go heels!

Nittany lions D has been great all year. one big win, and I mean beating a good team handily, is not enough to sell me on the buckeyes

well they handled Indiana...but they're still pissed about losing to the Golden Gophers, they're out for pelts and Badgers will have to do

I said that Tech would wait until they got national recognition to lose....a game on ESPN count as recognition? I'll say yes and give the win to Kansas. Rock Chalk!!!

Wake is headed the wrong way in a hurry, Miami hasn't really had a bad loss

common opponent, and most recent opponent is Rutgers for both squads, Uconn lost 12-10, Cinci won 13-10, Uconn hasn't recovered from losing their QB

my hatred for the college football postseason and the BCS period make me want to pick OK state, common opponent is Missouri. Texas allowed Missouri to score more points but they also put up more points, and the D has been pretty solid otherwise

common opponent is SC, both 7 point victories , but Georgia hasn't been what they were expected to be offensively this year, meanwhile LSU's offense is shaping up nicely as of late with the two QB system

a glance at the schedules made me want to choose the bulls but a guy with the s/n UL CARDS, not choosing the cards pushed me over the top

I'm still confused by Virginia so for that reason alone I'll go with G tech

FSU's offense just seems to be able to do more, Vtech has only been out of the 20's once

...alright NOW Chase Daniels is pissed, help me out Chase

Bib's Colege Pick 'em: Round 2

Alright here's how this is going to go. I'll come up with 12 games of interest every week for you all to choose from. You'll pick the winners and post them here or on the thread, whether you post them here or not, I will add them to the blog to make them easy to keep up with.

and since noone used them last week, and all of the games are saturday games, I left out the alternate games...I only had 7 good games selected going through the first time.

This week's games:

#13 LSU at South Carolina

#21 Wake Forest at Maryland

Illinois at Indiana

Wisconsin at Iowa

#12 Ohio State at #20 Michigan State

Georgia Tech at Clemson

Ole Miss at #2 Alabama

#22 Vanderbilt at #10 Georgia

#16 Kansas at #4 Oklahoma

Mississippi St at Tennessee

#11 Missouri at #1 Texas

#25 California at Arizona

My Picks: 4-8

I know. Shocking right? Well I could be a fool and say they'll win because I'll be in attendance (USC teams in all sports are undefeated when I attend: fun fact ) but here are my real reasons. LSU let a Miss St team with a worse offense than ours hang with them on their field. Our defense has proven it's one of the best. In my eyes This could be a blowout for us, could resemble the Auburn-LSU game if it's a battle it will come down to turnovers.

Neither team has looked good the past couple of weeks. with Wake barely beating a Clemson team that quit on their coach and losing to Navy, while Maryland got hanled by a Virginia team that had looked like one of the worst in the Big 6 conferences. but they have the Clemson game in common, Maryland beat Clemson...Clemson let Wake beat them.

Wow, why did I pick this game. this looks like a freebie, but everybody was on illinois last week too so....

both have some close losses, but I'm more impressed by Iowa's

Pryor is an inconsistent freshman, and Ohio State players are talking about QB by commitee to the media...

despite my hatred for them I've stuck by my point that they have the talent, I maintain that Bowden was the problem from the start and they come out pumped for this game...this coach has what Tommy didn't. the ability to light a fire under the players, get them going

Alabama will lose and these young kids...I'd say it will happen in a day game...plus all of you picked bama so...

I believe this one less than my Ole miss pick but again, you're all on the dogs...both teams beat my gamecocks by a TD. so I feel justified with this pick

alright I wanted to pick Kansas but I can't, they let horrible teams hang with them.

they appear to be getting better as the year goes on...can't say the same for Tennessee.

Chase Daniels wants revenge

people are still hanging on that Maryland game...you try waking up and playing a game at 9 a.m. "but it was a noon game" well they flew from California, so it was 9 by their time they showed players yawning during the stretches before the game. nuff said

Alright here's how this is going to go.

I'll come up with 12 games of interest every week for you all to choose from.

You'll pick the winners and post them here or on the thread, whether you post them here or not, I will add them to the blog to make them easy to keep up with.

Of the 12 games I pick 2 will have asterisks by them. I will have 3 alternate games listed, if you can't decide on a winner for one of the 2 I put an asterisk by, you can replace that game with an alternate game for full credit.

If you need me to explain anything, just let me know

This week's games:

Clemson vs. #21 Wake Forest

South Carolina vs. Kentucky*

Notre Dame vs. #22 North Carolina

Arizona State vs. #8
USC

My Picks:  8-4

well, Clemson was wrong already, but I'll explain anyway. I hadn't seen Clemson much since the Bama game and what I have seen has been bad, and I do hate them, but I know they have talent and didn't think that Tommy's bad coaching could hold them back for this long. I went against my better judgement...

I chose not to choose the SC game since I think that would be bad luck and I think tech is a safe bet

I chose NC because I'm not impressed with ND yet, and their fans seem to think that if UNC gets pressure (and they will) that ND will lose.

USC....no explanation necessary.

Ohio State...people are calling for Painter to be benched, and there is a poll on the Purdue board about who the problem is...problem equals loss.

Oklahoma, more impressed with who they've beaten and how, but this was a tough one for me.

Illinois, easy choice, they've been good all year.

Kansas, well the only good W for Colorado was WV but that game was funky, and FSU handled the Buffs.

Michigan State, the toughest for me so far, next closest was Texas-Oklahoma, because I think State is the better team, but both teams most recently played Iowa, because Northwestern had a bye last week. State beat Iowa 16-13, while Northwestern beat them 22-17. I'll go with Mich state but it should be a good game.

Penn Stat has run through their schedule with no problem and the Michigan loss for Wisconsin scares me, go Joe Pa!

the realistic fans are predicting a loss for OK state...that's good enough for me

Florida is inconsistent on offense this year for some reason...they just seem a bit off, I think Harvin is playing, despite the inconsistency I still like Florida more on offense, plus LSU gave Florida a reason to beat them...

Conference Rankings: Round 3

IGNORE!!!!

Alright so we all know the debate about the strengths of the Division 1 conferences, everybody thinks their conference is #1 or #2.

So LAwish (West Coast) and I (East Coast) decided to put the question to bed...

This is round 3 now and this time I did most of the work on my own, however I did get some help for two of the conferences

carolina8800 (Big East)
cubansajoke (Big 12)

Alright so we went through the 6 major conferences, and for the heck of it, threw in the top 2 mid-major conferences: the WAC, and the Mountain West Conference. We put each team in one of these 5 categories.

(you may want to skip down to the conference rankings if you don't care how it was done

5 Categories:
Big Boys- which I defined as National Title Contenders and teams that will not fall out of the top 10

Solid teams- which are teams that will likely not drop out of the rankings

Decent teams- which are teams that could get into the rankings at the back end or stay just outside the rankings

Bad teams- teams that likely aren't thinking about the rankings but may get to 6 wins to be bowl eligible

JV- teams that aren't thinking bowl game at all, 3 wins would be great

We each did our lists individually so that we didn't influence each other.

When we did our lists I realized that we would disagree about some teams so for scoring purposes 4 sub-categories were composed.

Sub-Categories:
Studs- teams that fall between Big boy's and solid teams

Good teams- teams that fall between Solid and Average teams

Mediocre teams- teams that fall between average and bad

Garbage- teams that fall between bad and JV

There are now 3 tiers in most of the categories to clear things up in the tiers where there were a lot of teams, since they aren't all equal.

Here is how the teams came out:

IGNORE!!!

Team Rankings:
Big Boys: Missouri, Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama

Studs: Tier 1: Penn. St., USF, BYU,Texas Tier 2: Georgia

Solid: Tier 1: USC (west), Florida Tier 2: Auburn, UConn Tier 3: Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Ohio St., Kansas, Utah, TCU, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt

Good: Tier 1: Boise St. Tier 2: Fresno St., Illinois, Oregon

Decent: Tier 1: Clemson, Maryland, Florida St., Michigan St., Oklahoma St., Kentucky Tier 2: Arizona St., Cal, Ole Miss Tier 3: North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, West Virginia, Oregon St.

Mediocre: Tier 1: Miami Tier 2: Purdue, Colorado, USC (east), Nevada Tier 3: Northwestern , Arizona, Air Force, UNLV

Bad: Tier 1: Louisville, Tennessee, Baylor Tier 2: Boston College Tier 3: Iowa, NC State, Duke, Pitt, Cincinnati, New Mexico St., San Jose St., Kansas St., Stanford, Mississippi St., New Mexico

Garbage: Tier 1: Texas A&M, UCLA Tier 2: Indiana, Louisiana Tech

JV: Tier 1: Iowa St., Rutgers, Colorado St. Tier 2: Wyoming, San Diego St., Washington, Washington St., Arkansas Tier 3: Virginia, Syracuse, Hawaii, Idaho, Utah St.

I graded the teams on a 5 points scale with Big Boys getting 5. The seperate tiers in each category received different amounts of points as well. Studs received 4.5 - 4.9 points, solid teams received 4 - 4.49 points and so on, down the line
Here's how the conferences came out:

IGNORE!!!

Conference rankings
1. SEC          3.4925  (up)
2. Big 12       3.25      (up)
3. Big Ten    3.1063  (up)
4. ACC          2.835    (up)
5. MWC         2.611    (no change)
6. Pac 10      2.6         (up)
7. Big East   2.5         (no change)
8. WAC         1.982    (down)

(Previous)
1. SEC           3.30916
2. Big 12         3.1133
3. Big 10         2.9090
4. ACC            2.77
5. MWC          2.611
6. Big East      2.5
7. Pac 10        2.4
8. WAC          2

So the top 5 stay the same, but the Pac 10 has jumped ahead of the Big East

Hopefully next week I get at least one other opinion on each conference, to balance some things out.

Comments people?

Alright so we all know the debate about the strengths of the Division 1 conferences, everybody thinks their conference is #1 or #2.

So LAwish (West Coast) and I (East Coast) decided to put the question to bed...

but, there was a problem and a pretty obvious one. Since we're both coastal, and focus on certain confernces we lack some knowledge about the middle of the country. So this time around I hired some "experts" to help us out with thier respective conferences.

wizardKing (Big 10)
carolina8800 (Big East)
mmaggettepack (ACC)
cubansajoke (Big 12)

If you have a problem with the way the teams in these conferences are ranked, take it up with them first, lol

Alright so we went through the 6 major conferences, and for the heck of it, threw in the top 2 mid-major conferences: the WAC, and the Mountain West Conference. We put each team in one of these 5 categories.

(you may want to skip down to the conference rankings if you don't care how it was done)

Now, this time around with more participants, teams would also fall between the sub-categories but so as not to create too many categories I'll have 2-3 tiers in each category below.
Here is how the teams came out:

Team Rankings:

Big Boys: USC (west), Missouri, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, LSU

Studs: Tier 1: Texas Tier 2: BYU

Solid: Tier 1: Auburn, Alabama Tier 2: Wake Forest, USF, Wisconsin, Penn St. Tier 3: Clemson, Virginia tech, Kansas, Utah, TCU

Good: Tier 1: Ohio St. Tier 2: Texas Tech, Vanderbilt Tier 3: UConn, Fresno St., Boise St., Illinois

Decent: Tier 1: Georgia Tech, Michigan St. Tier 2: Maryland, Oregon, Arizona St., Cal, Purdue, Colorado, UNLV

Mediocre: Tier 1: Florida St., North Carolina, Miami, Louisville, West Virginia Tier 2: Oklahoma St., Nebraska, Kentucky Tier 3: Cincinnati, Arizona, Nevada, Minnesotta, Northwestern, Air Force

Bad: Tier 1: USC (east), Ole Miss, Baylor Tier 2: Boston College, Iowa Tier 3: NC State, Pitt, Oregon St., UCLA, New Mexico St., San Jose St., Kansas St., Tennessee

Garbage:
Tier 1: Miss. St. Tier 2: Stanford, Louisiana Tech, Indiana, Wyoming, Colorado St., New Mexico

JV: Tier 1: Arkansas, Texas A&M Tier 2: Virginia, Rutgers, Michigan Tier 3: Duke, Syracuse, Washington, Washington St., Hawaii, Idaho, Utah St., Iowa St., San Diego St.

I graded the teams on a 5 points scale with Big Boys getting 5. The seperate tiers in each category recieved different amounts of points as well. Studs recieved 4.5 - 4.9 points, solid teams recieved 4 - 4.49 points and so on, down the line
Here's how the conferences came out:

Conference rankings

1. SEC           3.30916  (down)
2. Big 12         3.1133   (up)
3. Big 10         2.9090   (no change)
4. ACC            2.77      (up)
5. MWC          2.611     (down)
6. Big East      2.5        (down)
7. Pac 10        2.4        (down)
8. WAC          2            (down)

(Previous)
1. SEC      3.4583333
2. Pac-10   3
3. Big 12    2.9166667
4. Big 10    2.9090909
5. Big East 2.8125
6. ACC       2.6666667
   MWC      2.6666667
8. WAC      2.3333333
9. C-USA    2.25

So the SEC is still the top league, just ahead of the Big 12, then the Big 10, meanwhile the Pac 10 has slipped from 2nd to 7th. Wow

College Conferenes: Who's #1?

Alright so we all know the debate about the strengths of the Division 1 conferences, everybody thinks their conference is #1 or #2, (except the Pac 10 and SEC people who all think they're #1.

So LAwish (West Coast) and I (East Coast) decided to put the question to bed.

I'm going to break this down similar to the way I broke my NCAA tournament formula down (which I remind you picked the eventual Champion, several upsets, and  near upsets, and 3 of the final 4 check it out)

Alright so LA and I went through the 6 major conferences, and for the heck of it, threw in the top 3 mid-major conferences, the WAC, C-USA, and the Mountain West Conference. We put each team in one of these 5 categories.

(you may want to skip down to the conference rankings if you don't care how it was done)

5 Categories:

Big Boys- which I defined as National Title Contenders and teams that will not fall out of the top 10

Solid teams- which are teams that will likely not drop out of the rankings

Average teams
- which are teams that could get into the rankings at the back end or stay just outside the rankings

Bad teams- teams that likely aren't thinking about the rankings but may get to 6 wins to be bowl eligible

JV- teams that aren't thinking bowl game at all, 3 wins would be great

We each did our lists seperately so that we didn't influence each other.

When we did our lists I realized that we would disagree about some teams so for scoring purposes 4 sub-categories were composed.

Sub-Categories:

Studs- teams that fall between Big boy's and solid teams

Good teams
- teams that fall between Solid and Average teams

Mediocre teams- teams that fall between average and bad

Garbage- teams that fall between bad and JV

Here is how the teams came out:

Team Rankings:

Big Boys : USC (west), Missouri, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia

Studs: LSU, Texas, Oregon, BYU, Utah, TCU, Wisconsin, Penn St., Virginia Tech, Fresno St., USF, West Virginia, East Carolina

Solid: Kansas, Arizona St., Illinois, Ohio St., Clemson, Wake Forest, Boise St.

Good: Auburn, Alabama, Texas Tech, Cal, Oregon St., Nevada

Average: USC (east), Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Purdue, Michigan St., North Carolina, Florida St., UCF, Tulsa Tulane, Rutgers

Mediocre: Oklahoma St., Arizona, Kentucky, Texas A&M, UCLA, UNLV, New Mexico, Michigan, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Boston College, San Jose St, Southern Miss, Rice, UConn, Pitt, Cincinnati

Bad: Ole Miss, Kansas St., Colorado, Nebraska, Stanford, San Diego St., Northwestern, Miami, Houston, Marshall, Louisville

Garbage: Washington, Arkansas, Miss. St., Air Force, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Duke, Virginia, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, New Mexico St., SMU

JV: Washington St, Iowa St., Baylor, Wyoming, Colorado St., N.C. State, Idaho, Utah St.,UTEP, Memphis UAB, Syracuse

Now we differed on how to score the conferences because LA, realizing some of his conferences were top top heavy wanted to give more weight to the top teams, so I went with 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 syestem, while LA went with a 10, 7, 4, 2, 1 system (with teams in the sub-categories getting the average of the two they're between)

Here's how that shook down

Bib and LA's Conference rankings

Mine
1. SEC      3.4583333
2. Pac-10   3
3. Big 12    2.9166667
4. Big 10    2.9090909
5. Big East 2.8125
6. ACC       2.6666667
   MWC      2.6666667
8. WAC      2.3333333
9. C-USA    2.25

LA's
1. SEC       4.9583333
2. Pac-10   4.7
3. Big 12    4.5833333
4. Big 10    4.4090909
5. Big East 4.125
6. MWC     4.1111111
7. WAC     3.89999999
8. ACC      3.79166667
9. C-USA   2.91666667

So the SEC clearly the top league, followed by the Pac-10, Big 12, and Big 10

after that it get's muddy
