A Sports Major's Final Exam Essay . . .

I took a class this semester called "Trends and Issues in Sports and Entertainment"

Throughout the course of the semester we discussed many issues in all sports and forms of entertainment.

From social networking to steroids, from ticket scalping to coaches salaries we hit just about everything.

For our final, the professor asked us to choose one of the following:

College Sports, Professional Sports, or Live Entertainment (the clothed variety) and write an essay about its biggest issue.

Our only guidlines as far as length being:

"I want your essay like I want a woman's skirt. Long enough to cover the crucial areas, but short enough to keep my interest."

I chose College Football, and then I wrote this . . .

Coach Bib 13   ( no real names here lol)

Final Exam

Question 1: What is the biggest issue concerning college sports?

I thought about this question long and hard. I could have gone with athletes being paid but I don’t think that’s really that big of an issue. They get scholarship money and I don’t think there are many people out there besides the athletes who think they should be paid. One issue that everyone has an opinion on, and I’m sure you will get plenty of essays about this, is the college football bowl system vs. a playoff.

Why do I think this is the most important issue? You can walk into any sports bar in the country and toss that question out and a heated debate will ensue that could go on for hours. Most fans think that there should be a playoff, most players think that there should be a playoff, most coaches think that there should be a playoff (the ones that are in the championship vs. usually care a little less that year but otherwise they want one too). Some say they want a playoff but they aren’t sure if it would work, or how it would work. Even the President of the United States has come out and stated publicly that he wants a playoff in college football. You would think that with all of the commotion the NCAA would just go in and make a playoff but that’s where the problem lies. It’s all about the money. The NCAA will say it’s reasoning is about the kids but not many are buying that. This is basically an issue of the people vs. the system: A system that appears to be far too political for the aforementioned people.

For those that are for a playoff in college football the reasons are simple. First of all, Division 1 (Big) College football is the only league that does not   have a playoff to decide its champion. Which leads to reason 2. Because there is no playoff after the “chosen” championship game we are all left to decide if we thought the championship was legitimate or if another team should have gotten a shot at the title. These are the only two real arguments for a playoff but two strong points. Why only two? I’d say it’s because it’s common sense to most that a playoff is the way to go. The rest of the arguments for a playoff are rebuttals of arguments against one.

As for arguments against a playoff, and there are many. Some say that a playoff would diminish the importance of the regular season. These people cite the fact that NCAA teams can make the NCAA tournament with upwards of 10 losses, and in the NFL teams that know they’re going to make the playoffs rest their starters at the end of the season when they have nothing to play for. They also state that a playoff would ruin the “tradition” of the bowl games. Others issues that the common man brings up are that travel would be difficult for fans. How would one set up a playoff for major college teams where fans could travel to two or three playoff games? Then there is the argument from the NCAA itself. They also have multiple arguments. One being that a playoff would interfere with exams, the “it’s about the players” argument. Another is that if you opened it up to 4 teams, then people would argue that the 5th should have been in and then it grows to 6 or 8 and so on. This has already happened in Division 1AA.

Personally I’m for a playoff for the reasons stated above. It just makes more sense. I hate politics in sports and this system is political from top to bottom. I shouldn’t be able to say, “follow the money” for a game that is to determine the champion of a college sport. As I type this I’m hoping TCU gets voted ahead of Texas and yesterday I was hoping Texas would lose so I wouldn’t have to.  The argument about the academic side is ridiculous. Are these people saying that finals don’t matter to division 1AA or division 2 or 3 athletes? The argument for the Bowl games is somewhat legitimate but nobody said get rid of the bowl games. The corporate sponsors aren’t going anywhere. You think they don’t want a piece of a playoff game? As for the diminishing of the importance of the regular season this argument is just not well thought out. There are still only 11-12 regular season games. Is Florida tanking last night since they’ll still likely be in the top 8 if they lose? Does Cinci lie down against Pitt because they might? Is Boise resting Kellen Moore yesterday because they have the game in the bag, well I guess they did anyway didn’t they. If there is a playoff every game will still mean just as much if not more. If teams are fighting for 8 spots and not just 2 then when they get that 1 loss they still have a reason to believe they have a shot at the title and therefore reason to keep fighting week in and week out for the prize. The best argument against one is that it would open up the floodgates and for that I propose this. Today is selection Sunday for the college bowl games. If there were a committee this committee could sit down every year this time and decide if they agree that #1 and #2 should play for a title, or if there should be a 3-8 team playoff. Today everyone would be glued to their televisions to find out if TCU and Cinci would get to play Texas or Bama and decide who goes on to play for the title. I know I would. If there isn’t a set number then there won’t be as big a debate. This year I don’t think anyone would argue that there are more than 5 teams that have a claim to the title game. So I’d expect the committee to come out and say that there will be a 4-team playoff with the four I just mentioned or a 5 team playoff that would include Boise . All I want is for that to be decided on the field, and not at a desk.

Obviously I wrote this Sunday

any opinions?

Bib's College Pick 'em 2: Round 14

Alright here's how this is going to go. I'll come up with 12 games of interest every week for you all to choose from. You'll pick the winners and post them here or on the thread, whether you post them here or not, I will add them to the blog to make them easy to keep up with. I try to pick games between teams in the top 25, or in the other's recieving votes but then I move to teams with winning records then .500 records, and all teams are FBS.

Anybody is welcome to join in at any time, dont worry about missing a week if you decide to join late.

Good Luck!

College Basketball pick em starting next week!!! and of course the bowl pick em!!! I'll create a bowl pool too

This week's games:

(Rankings Reflect BCS rankings)

*Thursday*

#16 Oregon State at #7 Oregon 33-37

*Friday*

Ohio (9-3) at Central Michigan (10-2) 10-20

*Saturday*

#21 Houston at East Carolina (8-4) 32-38

#23 West Virginia (7-3) at Rutgers (8-3) 24-21

#19 California at Washington (4-7) 10-42

#10 Georgia Tech at Clemson (8-4) 39-34

South Florida (7-4) at Connecticut (6-5) 27-29

Wisconsin (8-3) at Hawaii (6-6) 51-10

Arizona (7-4) at #18 USC 21-17

#1 Florida at #2 Alabama 13-32

#5   Cincinatti at #15 Pittsburgh 45-44

#3 Texas at #22 Nebraska 13-12

My Picks :  5-7

This should be a hell of a game . . . I may have to try to find it on ESPN360 tonight while I'm working. It's a safe bet that both teams will be in or near the 40's. I think I just want Oregon to win. this is a tough one to call. both teams are hot right now. I would love to see a Oregon-Boise rematch if at all possible. I haven't looked at the bowl scenarios

And oregon wins . . . great coaching job up there. A lot of teams would have fallen apart after what happened to them the first game of the season. My own school being one of them.

Had to dig a little deeper for my research on this one. both teams like to throw the ball. Lefevour actually has more carries and rushing yards than any Ohio running back. Lefevour breaks Pennington's MAC touchdown passes record and gets the W

What's up with these championship games being tough to call? lol Alright the natural pick here is Houston, they're the one with the Heisman candidate here right? but after comparing the teams this is another game that is a toss up in my eyes. Houston is more likely to win big but if Pinkney and Holtz dont get sucked into trying to outdo Keenum they should be right there in this game. Ironically I think this game comes down to defense. whoever forces turnovers will win the game. with pinkney's td/i ration being 1.3/1 I cant pick him in this one

Im kinda wondering why everybody picked WV. I guess they did just come off of a win against Pitt but otherwise both teams are 8-3. Rutgers has the bad loss to Syracuse, both lost to Cinci, but WV lost to USF who Rutgers shut out 31-0. So for me this is another toss up . . . give me the knights

Alright I see no good reason to pick Washington here . . . sure the Huskies upset USC and Arizona somehow but otherwise they were who we thought they were. Cal has only lost to the big boys in the conference, USC and the two Oregon schools. they should take care of business here.

I started to do research but who am I kidding, I want Georgia tech to win because if Clemson wins I'm going to start asking where my school's BCS berth is . . .

ah Connecticut . . . winners of two in a row. Im glad for them. but how about this stat. Their defense before jasper howard's death didnt allow a team more than 25 and that 25 was in his last game. since his death they haven't allowed BELOW 28. They're hemeradging (definitely spelled wrong lol, I'm not going back) points. They're on an uptick though and USF has just been horrible in conference play so give me the Huskies.

Yeah Im taking Hawaii. Why not? they've won 4 straight, they're offense has found a rhythm, Wisconsin has proven to be a bad road team (despite only having 4 road games). Not to mention Wisconsin has been in Hawaii since wednesday lol, something has gone down or they'll just be too relaxed come gametime

Oh how the mighty have fallen. This should be a good game. People are still somehow disillusioned about USC being the Pac 10 powerhouse that they arent this year. they're just a good team in a conference with a few good teams. Arizona being one of those teams. I expect a good game. Arizona had two tough losses in a row followed by a close win against AZ state which i thought was going to push me to the Trojans but then i realized SC also had a close one with the Devils a couple weeks ago. lol I'll take the trojans just because I need to stop picking against them.

alright both teams have their weaknesses and although I prayed for losses for both of them I didnt get them. Bama is all about their D and Florida claims to be balanced. The way I see it. my gamecocks held Florida to 24 "but you all held bama to 20 and spotted them 7 of them." we also scored 2 actual touchdowns against Florida. Something that DID NOT  happen against the Tide. I've actually grown tired of Tebow, Roll Tide . . .

Three close calls in a row for Cinci . . . that defense that wasnt supposed to be good at the start of the year. hasnt been good at the end here. Pitt however has not exactly been rolling people themselves HOWEVA! (as stephen a. smith would say) Pitt has a D, and Pitt has a sick freshman RB. Go Panthers, give me an upset baby!!!

Sorry Colt, I stopped caring about your college career a couple weeks ago as well, still want you to get the heisman (if gerhart doesnt) but I couldnt care less about your national title. Go Horned Frogs!!!

This week's games:

(Rankings Reflect BCS rankings)

*Friday*

Temple (9-2) at Ohio (8-3) 17-35

#2 Alabama at Auburn (7-4) 26-21

#9 Pittsburgh at West Virginia (7-3) 16-19

Nevada (8-3) at #6 Boise St. 33-44

*Saturday*

#12 Oklahoma St. at Oklahoma (6-5) 0-27

#17 Miami at South Florida (7-3) 31-10

Tennessee (6-5) at Kentucky (7-4) 30-24

Notre Dame (6-5) at Stanford (7-4) 38-45

Southern Miss (7-4) at East Carolina (7-4) 20-25

#21 Utah at #19 BYU 23-26

Arkansas (7-4) at #15 LSU 30-33

Georgia (6-5) at #7 Georgia Tech 30-24

My Picks :  6-6

This team has won 9 straight after losing to Villanova (who I didnt even know had a football team) and Penn St. They're coming off of 56 and 47 point games in their last 2 and offensively appear to have much more.

I'd love to pick Auburn but they've been pretty inconsistent. Thier offense was good for a while and then it was iffy. Bama is the team I think I want to win the title actually . . . wait, no. TCU is lol I think i need Nebraska to beat Texas . . . which has nothing to do with this game. Bama is easily the better team I guess

Pitt is probably the quietest top 10 team in the history of top 10 teams, I've heard nothing about them anywhere. NC State loss is just weird when you put it with the great wins they have. They wont lose focus this close to the prize

This is another one of those toss-up games. Nevada's offense seems to have gotten better and better as the season has gone along and they're the better offensive team, but of course Boise is the better defensive team. A Nevada win wouldnt surprise me but I'd need Boise to be coming off a bad performance to pick them to lose at home.

cant pick Oklahoma here. they get down Jones will start throwing picks. Senior day and all for the sooners but its too late for them to recover anything . . . rough end to a long season for the Sooners

going to be a lot of athleticism on the field in this one. South Florida seems to have just fallen apart down the stretch . . . not that Miami has been great themselves but USF has seriously declined

Sorry T. Wyndham I've got to go with the Vols. I picked Kentucky over Georgia but Kentucky hasnt beatten anybody with any type of defense.

are you kidding me? I'm not picking against my boys Gerhart and Luck

Southern Miss doesnt turn the ball over. 22 TD's vs 3 picks by the two QB's. should be a close game. Southern Miss a better offense, ECU a better defense.

This may end up being the toughest call for me . . . wow, Mormon Bowl action here. tough tough tough, I find something that makes me want to go with one and then something that makes me want to go with the other. could go either way. Home team, no I wont take them. picked against BYU last week and was wrong obviously but I'll try my luck betting against them again . . .

Ive never liked this LSU team this year, dont know how they've stayed afloat. Arkansas hit a rough patch in th emiddle of the season but they've gotten it together down the stretch and go out in style.

Im noticing a lack of upsets in my picks . . . Tech isnt invincible

*Saturday*

North Carolina (7-3) at Boston College (7-3) 31-13

Minnesota (6-5) at  #13 Iowa 0-12

Oklahoma (6-4) at Texas Tech (6-4) 13-41

Kentucky (6-4) at Georgia (6-4) 34-27

Kansas State (6-5) at Nebraska (7-3) 3-17

#11 Oregon at Arizona (6-3) 44-41 OT

My Picks :  8-4

Tough game for me to decide on with it being an away game for the Heels. They are coming off beating Miami and VTech in their last 3 though so I think they've gotten this whole consistency thing down now . . . At least I hope they do

Seemed like every time I looked up in the first quarter the Heels were scoring, two defensive TD's early put it away

I put games like this on here so I can pick upsets . . . Ive been pretty damn successfull with it lately actually but to business. I guess people have forgotten that Iowa was probably the luckiest team in the country all year and we were all just waiting for that luck to run out. It has . . .

well . . . Iowa scores 12 points. Minnesota decided not to score though so they kinda lost lol

This should be a good game . . . the only games with mixed results they had were Nebraska and Texas A&M, all other games they had similar results but to a different degree, Oklahoma has held their opponents to less points but also scored less points, Oklahoma the better D, Tech the better O. Tech at home . . . 1-3 on the road with Jones starting. Losses at Miami, at Texas, at Nebraska. the win? Kansas

Wow, Tech blowout. I thought OU would show up but regardless. win #2

I kinda wanted to go with the Cyclones but I also dont want to have the trend of picking all the "upsets" it is another toss-up in my mind, although Mizzou actually did look good last week as opposed to the rest of the season for both teams (garbage)

mizzou came through, that's 3

A lot of close conference games for both teams. overall it looks like Ohio has the better D and NIU a slightly better O. NIU has won 4 straight since their 1 point loss to Toledo but besides the E. Michigan demolition none was that great a victory that I can say they're rolling. Should be a competitive match. Could go either way

Could have gone either way but glad it went my way, Ohio by 7 and Im 4-1 so far . . . (slide to come)

I cant tell if Ole Miss is good or not . . . they owned Tennessee last week while LSU was playing a cupcake, whatever. Go Rebs

Wow, not yet, great game, the refs tried to rob Ole miss a few times but in the end LSU tried to spike the ball with one second left lmao. 5-1

thats right Air Force. As you all know I dont get stuck on names . . . I also have nothing to lose. the fact of the matter is this, none of either team's conference wins is more impressive than the other. BYU 59-21 over UNLV, Air Force 45-17. BYU 38-28 over SDGST, Air Force 26-14. What did stand out was the respective TCU games. Air Force lost 17-20, BYU lost 7-38 . and BYU just came off of a 5 point win against New Mexico.

slide time! BYU took care of business in this one

as much as I wanted to joke about the Badgers looking forward to their trip to hawaii in a couple weeks I just cant do it. They've been inconsistent this year but Northwestern is a hard team for me to pick and sleep well at night . . .

damnit, damnit, damnit
I wanted to pick the wildcats baaaaaaad oh well

Do I really need to explain this pick? I love Gerhart, I love Luck, Stanford is a train coming down a hill, anybody or anything in it's way is getting destroyed . . . that includes bears. oh, and why not . . . "KEEP THAT DAMN BAND OFF THE FIELD!!!"

Cal showed a lot of heart. Id be pissed if I didnt have Vareen on my college fantasy team lol, title here I come!!!

Ah another one of these games . . . one team better O, one team better D, neither team really "better" Now as I dont want to hear Paul4cats mouth I want to pick Georgia but I like Kentucky in this one. Nothing that Georgia has done screams "pick me" and Ive just had dreams about Paul telling me that Kentucky is better than SC and blah blah blah . . .

and Kentucky held on for me. nice

Ah the battle to see who gets to be every TCU fan's favorite team for a week so. Despite the fact that at the start of the season I wanted Colt McCoy to win the Heisman and play in the championship game I hate the BCS more. so, Im going to pick who i think is better equippped to handle Texas. Kansas State has been crappy at best down the stretch here. after losing to Oklahoma they beat Kansas by 7 (17-10) and then lose to Missouri . . . Nebraska meanwhile, beat Oklahoma and beat down Kansas. Go Huskers

Please Nebraska, Please!!! beat the Longhorns!!!

There will be other chances for Stanford to get to the rose bowl . . . really I'd be happy with either team going. Watched arizona for the first time last week and wasnt impressed obviously

alright Ducks in the bowl. A great story after the Blount punch kicked off their year . . .

*Thursday*

#24 South Florida at Rutgers (6-2) 0-31

*Friday*

#25 West Virginia at #5 Cincinnati 21-24

*Saturday*

Tennessee (5-4) at Mississippi (6-3) 17-42

Stanford (6-3) at #5 USC 55-21

#14 Miami at North Carolina (6-3) 24-33

Fresno St. (6-3) at Nevada (6-3) 14-52

Texas A&M (5-4) at Oklahoma (5-4) 10-65

#16 Utah at #4 TCU 28-55

Texas Tech (6-3) #19 Oklahoma St 17-24

Notre Dame (6-3) at #12 Pittsburgh 22-27

#17 Arizona at California (6-3) 16-24

My Picks :  7-5

incase anybody notices. yes, i put this up at 9:15 at which time the game is 10-0 rutgers but to qualify, and I wouldnt lie. before logging onto the website, knowing the game had started I said that i would pick a winner incase i saw the score. because i did want to do some research still. I chose rutgers because USF has sucked in conference play, and then when i went to do research i saw the score so i just stuck with it. I did like that rutgers had a much more impressive showing against Pitt though.

alright . . . i didnt see a second of the game but I do remember the bulls saying something about some revenge lol. so then they go out and get shut out.

I was going to go with WV with the feeling that Cinci cant keep rolling like this and the whole Pike-Collaros thing would be a distraction. but WV will be without Devine and their QB in this one. Just too much to overcome

I see devine ended up playing but it wasnt enough obviously

both teams coming off of games against cupcakes. Ole miss has 3 losses. 2 on the road and one against Bama. another toss-up game but the vols also lost 3 important players

One thing that has been consistent for the Vols is thier defense. Not today . . .

it's probably important to note that all 3 of Stanford's losses are on the road and both of USC's losses are also on the road. USC is the home team but on paper these two teams are evenly matched . . . the only reason you'd pick USC ahead of them is because they're USC. They followed up a horrible game against Oregon with a bad game against AZ state.

Can you all please climb off of USC's junk now . . .

The Heels D has been solid for most of the season. it's the offense that has been inconsistent. Miami has been held under 20 just once (loss to virginia tech, who UNC beat 2 weeks ago) I think Miami just has a little bit too much offense for the heels. Home field advantage? no, 2 of the heels 3 losses are at home (one to virginia)

I knew I was going to get this wrong . . . i think i have yet to correctly predict the outcome of a UNC game

Should be a heck of a game but Nevada's offense with 3 games of 60+ points is just ridiculous and hard to ignore. Add that it's a huge conference game at home and voila

Wow, Nevada just dominated lol

I honestly dont know what georgia looks like anymore but apparently it's not good, I think that after losing 3 in a row Auburn is back on an up-tick and get it done

Well Auburn started out looking like a winner . . .

well I messed up and opened another page over this one while I was doing the picks so I dont have time for an analysis here. I think i had said something about A&M not being bad on the road necessarily.

The score was 14-10 when i turned away. Guess I should have kept watching

TCU had better games against every conference opponent except Air force. Good enough for me.

unanimous pick, and made it look easy

another pick I made and then erased by accident. blah blah blah, they played better against Texas and Houston

well I started strong but my picks are falling apart here at the end

Pitt is rolling, I hate having to rush my picks but I hate Notre Dame and Pitt just looks great right now, meanwhile all I hear about Notre Dame is that Weis will probably be fired . . .

Pitt was dominating . . . apparently they let Notre Dame back in but they won so yaay

Best, who would have been the X factor, is out. So the better team will win.

and just like that Oregon is the lone 1-loss Pac 10 team

*Saturday*

South Carolina (6-3) at Arkansas (4-4) 16-33

Kansas (5-3) at Kansas State (5-4) 10-17

Navy (6-3) at #22 Notre Dame 23-21

Duke (5-3) at North Carolina (5-3) 6-19

#16 Ohio State at #11 Penn St. 24-7

Florida State (4-4) at Clemson (5-3) 24-40

#24 Oklahoma at Nebraska (5-3) 3-10

Fresno St. (5-3) at Idaho (7-2) 31-21

My Picks :  5-7

Well I went to do some research so I could give you a well-researched answer but who am I kidding. I'm not picking against my team. Arkansas coming off a game against a cupcake wont be ready for the physicality the Gamecocks will bring.

Next week at the Brice should be fun . . .

Kansas State is the better team and they're at home. The Jayhawks have lost 3 in a row. Must be distracted by fighting the #1 basketball team in the country . . .

That's 4 in a row for Kansas

I think Notre Dame has stopped playing to the level of their opponent. That plus the fact that they're home is why Im picking them. Id usually try to find a way to pick against them but Im done with that. Navy got them last year if Im not mistaken. It wont happen twice in a row.

Whatever I'm glad they lost

I expected to look at Duke's body of work and not be impressed but I must say, I actually am. Wins over Virginia, Maryland and, NC state dont seem great but a 49-28 win over NC state cant be ignored. NC is weak against teams with smooth offenses. i dont want to pick against NC either. especially since it's a rivalry . . . damn this is tough. alright, Duke it is

Awesome . . . well, there went that, Go Heels Foot in mouth

Oklahoma St. is the better team obviously and though they've only had 2 away games and only have 4 total, they're not a bad road team. Iowa St.'s only good win was against Nebraska in an ugly 9-7 game.

Easy pick

Two teams with great defenses or at least considerably consistent good defenses. Penn St has allowed over 17 points once. In their loss to now #4 Iowa. I like JoePa and the gang to take it to Pryor and the boys.

so far if i went against what i normally do It's bitten me. except the SC game but that bit me anyway lol

Going with LSU for no reason in particular. Its time for one of the top 3 to go down. I'm tired of looking at them. They cant stay this wasy forever. It's time for an upset. and I dont see why it cant happen. Is this a ridiculous pick? I dont think so . . .

Tigers got robbed on what should have been a pick. Not that Im one of the conspiracy theorists.

Why not? yeah I like Stanford. Luck is looking like a top Qb down the line here. Gerhart is just a beast. their D is solid enough also. We need one of those weeks in football where a few top teams go down . . .

I got my upset pick of the week. I can die happy

I think this is the second time I've picked against Cal, though they are my favorite pac-10 team (dates back to the Aaron Rodgers days) I dont know why everybody is on Cal. 2 point win over AZ state in the final minutes that impressive?

Get well Jahvid Best . . . Oregon St. was all over this though

Florida state cant fire Bowden, or wont. so I guess they're trying to kill him with their last 4 games being so close. I smell a shootout in this one. and for the second time this round Im going to pick a rival to win. Clemson begins their yearly turnaround making Gamecock fans more and more nervous for that end of the season matchup. C.J. Spiller tries to inject some steroids into his Heisman campaign.

I think Spiller was successful with the roids. He may not be able to walk come Monday but he showed his stuff

I cant call the Nebraska upset. they dont have the offense. Oklahoma should have little trouble with the Huskers.

The hell happened there . . .

Im taking the Vandals, should be a shootout. the Fresno fans are afraid of their own passing game. and the coach seems to be wanting to expirement with it. if the dogs run the ball they take it though.

Whatever . . .

Kansas State (5-3) at Oklahoma (4-3) 30-42

#3  Texas at #14 Oklahoma St 41-14

#5 USC at #10 Oregon 20-47

My Picks :    7-5

Apparently the Heels have fallen off quite a bit since last year. Their only decent looking win is the one over UConn, they've lost all of their ACC games including one to Virginia. VT should take this one easily, especially at home

or not . . .Foot in mouth

WV hanst really had that game that makes me say, yes, this team is good and that's why they're just 21 in the standings. at the same time they dont really have a bad loss. USF has been handled in their last two against cinci and Pitt and it looks like the Big East has their number and the Freshman has come back down to earth.

and WV has come back down to earth . . .

I was slightly on the fence on this one for a while. Rutgers lost by 7 to Pitt and that is the only significant game they've had in my eyes. Connecticut is somewhat hard to read but coming off of that battle with WV and the funeral being this monday and the fact that they're coming back home I think the emotion in the stadium puts them over the top.

Damn! Two weeks in a row it looks like they've won and then the other team makes a huge play. poor UConn . . .

Auburn has hit a wall offensively since entering conference play. thier offense was looking explosive but has sputtered out of late. Meanwhile, Ole Miss has gotten themselves back on track. Common opponent is Arkansas, Ole Miss beat them 30-17, Auburn lost 23-44.

I guess Auburn broke through that wall . . .

CMU is a good team, but they're a different team on the road than at home. Before I'd pick a smaller conference school to beat a major confernce contender Im going to need that team to dominate their conference which CMU hasnt on the road. BC (besides that game where Dabo and the boys had the eagles team help them wrangle 2 of each species) has been pretty consistent. CMU might score but the better team wins in the end.

Wow, CMU didnt even compete

I'm going to admit that AZ state had me hypnotized for a couple weeks because of how close they played Georgia but in Pac 10 play they havent really impressed me. The Washington win is good and was at home but they did not blow out Washington state, and that's just something you have to do. Cal did however blow Washington state out. and I think they're back on track.

Last minute field goal but a win is a win!

I have no way to explain what happened to the Red Raiders last week but other than that game they've been pretty  consistent. I had been waiting for a while for Kansas to be exposed and it finally happened against Colorado of all teams. The red raiders should get themselves back on track this week.

Nice win, Nice win

Iowa State is surprisingly good right now, an ugly win over Nebraska, but they took care of Baylor like they were supposed to and lost in close games to both of the Kasas schools. A&M, who I like (mostly because their QB is on one of my fantasy teams) has been all over the place. They owned Tech a week after getting owned by Kansas state. They seem to play well every other week (seriously look at their games) and they played well last week so they wont this week. I already thought Iowa state was the better team but I know A&M can be dangerous.

I guess A&M is for real . . .

As much as I want Florida to lose, and think they will, this is not the week. Georgia has played like a team led by a freshman this year. Ups and downs. Florida has been proven to be flawed but they'll find a way to get it done.

Dominant performance.

It's all about the Oklahoma D for me. They have a great defense, and while Kansas state can be explosive, they can also be stopped.

Kansas State did score but Oklahoma got it done.

The Horns wont slip here. They have the defense to go with the offense.

The shorter my post is the more sure I am.

Listen closely as I say this . . . Oregon has the better offense in this game. How many times has that been said about USC? Dont think I've heard it. Their defense? Allowed 27 and 36 in the last two games. that 36 is the second highest Oregon state has scored this year (38 against stanford). Ducks and it's not even a long shot pick, this is a tossup game. its time for that damn freshman to look like one

Did I say Oregon had a better offense? Yeah, I did. 613 yards later . . .

This week's games:

(Rankings Reflect BCS rankings)

*Saturday*

South Florida (5-1) at #20 Pittsburgh 14-41

Connecticut (4-2) at #23 West Virginia 24-28

Arkansas (3-3) at Mississippi (4-2) 17-30

Oklahoma (3-3) at #25 Kansas 35-13

Boston College (5-2) at Notre Dame (4-2) 16-20

#13 Penn St. at Michigan (5-2) 35-10

Air Force (4-3) at #18 Utah 16-23 OT

UCLA (3-3) at #22 Arizona 13-27

Auburn (5-2) at #9 LSU 10-31

#8 TCU at #16 BYU 38-7

Oregon State (4-2) at #7 USC 36-42

Arizona State (4-2) at Stanford (4-3) 14-33

My Picks :    8-4

I've got to go with Pitt. They seem to be firing on all cylinders and while South Florida only has one loss I think that freshman is coming down to earth a bit now. Pitt RB should put forth a good game.

Domination . . .

Their only loss is to Auburn, I cant fault them for that. Of course Uconn has the emotion and all but in Howard they didnt just lose a teammate, they lost a damn good Corner. WV wins it in those ominous ass mountains (although I hear they're not ominous duringd the day lol)

Well the Huskies put up a fight, had me scared after that 88 yard TD catch in the 4th but WV came through
woo Pig sooey!!! lol, this team has been on a tear since that Bama loss. and surprisingly the defense is doing its part. holding explosive teams like Auburn and Texas A&M to 23 and 19 respectively while scoring in the 40s themselves. Ole Miss may put up a fight but Arkansas is just playing too well right now.

Well what do you know, Ole Miss has recovered . . .

I've been calling for Kansas to fall out of the top 25 for 3 weeks now, they lost to Colorado last week after barely escaping Southern Miss and then Iowa State. They continue to fall back into their place.

And there it is

The Irish dont know how to have any type of game but a close one . . . screw it. BC

One of those I hate Notre dame so i wont pick them games. my own stupidity

After allowing 21 and 17 to Iowa and Illinois the Nittany Lions have gotten back to not allowing opponents to score. Meanwhile Michigan had a tune up game last week against my from Delaware State. When I first picked this game out of the available games I was thinking upset, but that is why I have been sucking at my own pick 'ems. Nittany lions it is.

I was worried about this one but it worked out for me

Both teams seem to be the type that play to the level of their opponent. Air Force with the 3 point loss to TCU and then only scoring 10 against Wyoming . . . Utah only beating Colorado st by 7, the last time Air force was in the pick ems I picked "em" to beat Minnesota . . .they're back and Im going with them again, (my second against the grain pick I believe)

Well they took it to OT but didnt have enough in the end

The Bruins have lost 3 in a row after starting 3 and 0. The Wildcats have alternated wins and losses for the past 5 weeks. the last 3 games in that stretch by less than 7 points each. The common opponent here was stanford. UCLA lost, Arizona won in a shootout but I say the Bruins take this one and keep the cats alternating

Whatever lol, Im stupid for picking UCLA. last game I ever pick when i think the other team is better

The SEC schedule has been rough on both teams (with the exception of their 1st games. LSU has pulled out some close wins, Auburn has swallowed back-to-back losses. Eeeeeeeeverybody is on LSU and I believe rightfully so. I wanted to go with Auburn but LSU has had 2 weeks to prepare for this game, sorry Auburn, it just aint hapnin

and it didnt, I almost went with Auburn lol

Should be a hell of a game. Probably the game of the week and I just read somewhere that its not on tv but that cant be right. I'll probably get it on VS im guessing. TCU survived a scare against Air Force but has overall been the better of the two teams defensively. I think BYU has a better offense but their defense gives up too many points for me to pick them in a game like this. Horned frogs baby!!!

Revenge of the Horned Frogs . . .

Im just going to pick them to see what it feels like . . .

It feels cheap

Alright another tough pac 10 one. I really like stanford so Im handicapping myself there and have lost with them twice already. Despite their beating washington im still not sold on AZ state, they confuse me actually. I have to pick against them

Stanford finally comes through for me
