Will IU Ever Find a Knight Replacement..??

April 3 = =

I have a great deal of respect for Bobby Knight as a Basketball COACH.  As a person, he falls a little short.  His teams were always very competitive, yet he very seldom had a squad full of "blue chippers" like some of those other schools had.  He taught the game well.  His players "learned" and "listened".

Unfortunately, IU is still looking for his replacement.   Maybe if they hadn't allowed the set-up of Bobby Knight, they would still be looking.  Maybe Tom Crean is the answer.... maybe not.

Will IU Ever Find a Knight Replacement..??

Putting

One of the best things about living in the ugly snowy north, is you get to put away the clubs for 6-months.  Most everyone else continues to play while us northerners only dream about it.  At the same time, we have an opportunity to start fresh each spring.  We don't have those nagging bad habits carry-over from one season to the next.  It's great starting with no bad habit.... and just letting them develop as the year progresses.

This year I'm going to try putting with a different style.  .  .  .   I'm going to look directly at the hole, align myself, check the ball and club, look at the hole, and stroke it while looking at the hole.   I've read about this technique in GOLF Magazine before and I'm now going to try it.  This is counter to what I've done all my life, so it should be interesting.  We'll see just how much magic is left in this "Louisville Slugger" of a putter.

As the year progresses a progress report will be provided.

I wonder if anyone else has tried this..??  hmmmmm . . . . this might be a good message board thread.

When Is Enough . . . Enough..??

March 28 = =

When is Enough actually .... enough..??  I've been asked that question many times and I've asked that same question many times myself.  Some of my best conversations are internal struggles that we all have.  If I " Lift - Clean - and Cheat " will anyone really know?  If I don't  "Lift - Clean - and Cheat " will I be doing what everyone else is doing?  Is it right?  Is it wrong?  These are all internal conversations that we deal with on a daily basis.....some conversations more serious than others.... like,  "should I take that extra piece of pie?"   " Oh, go ahead, no one's looking".  Internal conversation..... we all have them  . . . . right..??

How about   "When is enough actually, enough?"    I've truly been asking myself that question recently with regards to golf..... Specifically, Tiger Woods.  Currently, there are thirteen discussion threads boldly advertising Tiger Woods in their titles.  That's 13  out of 50 discussion threads.   That's 26% of the first-50 threads.   I don't even wish to research how many more of these first-50 threads have discussions where Tiger is mentioned, alluded to, praised, or abused.   I can guess that the percentage is a lot higher than we even imagine.  He's a great putter  - he's a terrible putter  - he's the greatest since___________ [ you can fill in the blank ]  -  he'll win the masters  -  he'll lose the masters  -  his #1 ranking is in jeopardy  -  he breaks necks  -  he swears - he breathes  -  he doesn't like fish because he avoids water hazards  - he's the greatest thing since sliced bread   ..   ..   ..   ..   the subjects / comments just go on-and-on..!!

Don't get me wrong; I've been quoted as saying that "I finally had to admit that Jack Nicklaus was better than my idol, Arnie Palmer; and I think Tiger Woods is even better than Jack Nicklaus."  .... or something very close to that.  The specifics of my entry is something I can't locate right now, but you get the point.   The point is,  Yes, I did admit Tiger's greatness; but there comes a time in everyone's life when they're finally going to reach that point and say, When Is Enough . . . Enough..??

For me . . . I've finally reached that point.  Enough is enough..!!    Everyone has a different tolerance for different situations.  I've reached my tolerance on the Tiger Woods topic for discussions.  I guess you could say, I've "O.D.-ed"  on Tiger.  I'm sorry everyone, but I just can't discuss or read any more about him for a while.  There may come a time later when I will find it easier to join-in the discussions on Tiger, but for now...... I'm DONE.  If the conversation comes-up on the Tee, I'll figure a way around it.  As for these CBS message boards, I will be noticeably absent.

Heck....I've even joined the threads discussing the differences between OSU and UM [ that's right Prior ...its OSU, Not UOS ... dingbat ]; and the difference between the Browns and Steelers..... anything other than TW.  I'll probably join the debates between the Tigers and the Indians..... anything but where the Golf threads are currently headed, unless they're not TW related..... after all..... I still love Baseball and Golf.

Well, there you have it..!!  right out there in the open; and now I can't hide from it.  May we all enjoy the day, the weekend, and each other.

Season Opener ....??????

Am I the only one around who thinks having a season opener over in Japan is counter to the American Tradition of Baseball..?? In fact, I consider having this "silly" opener in Japan as a slap to the most important of all American Traditions . . . . . having the first opening pitch being thrown in the contest between Cincinnati and their opponent. For those of you who aren't baseball history buffs.....The Cincinnati Reds were the first "all" professional team in baseball; and therefore, it has been a tradition to have the Cincinnati game always start 5 minutes before any other game. This way we always have the first pitch of the season thrown during the Cincinnati contest. Its a tribute to the first team in baseball. hmmmmm....... I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks that's an insult..??

As for this silly opener in Japan, I hear the baseball world is trying to expand it's world wide market. My opinion is ....... all Selig wants to do is exploit baseball in Japan for all the money he can get. Who knows, maybe they're selling HGH cheaper over there. I, for one, would like to see the balance sheet for this opener concept in Japan...and how they rationalize this. Heck, if they wanted world wide exposure, they could put a team in Toronto....Oh.! I guess that was already tried..... not such a hot idea as its turned-out. .....*&$#!*$#$#!!

Don't get me wrong... I love baseball. The one thing I can't seem to resist is baseball hats... baseball hats for baseball, for college, for golf ......although I'm starting to curb my appetite a little. I'm now down to just a few professional hats [ Wahoo, Mets, Detroit, Yankees, White Sox, Cubs] then there's the college hats [Xavier University, Kent State, Ohio State (the Woody Hayes "O"), Mercyhurst, Kalamazoo (yep, I got the hornet), Michigan (yep, maize/blue - I don't think Woody would mind)..... not to forget the golf hats [Snake Eyes, Titleist , Callaway, Srixon,TaylorMade]. Whew..!! Looking at all that, I think its time to clean house and rid myself of some of those.

Ooops . . . Sorry, I got off the subject, but then again, I guess I can do that here ..... because these are just random thoughts that I can come back to some time in the future and expand on them. Geez... I wonder if anyone else has a problem of having too many hats..?? Oh, well.... another day, another hat..

About Little Bit of This & Little Bit of That
The name of this Blog really is "A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, AND A LITTLE BIT OF THAT..." in honor of a great Cleveland Sports Writer, Hal Lebovitz. His column touched the hearts of many sports enthusiasts throughout the U.S. My goal is certainly not to compete with such a great giant, but to have a place to record thoughts and views on a variety of subjects, from sports to politics. Everyone is welcome to read and provide comments as they feel fit. I only ask others to be fair to everyone else and no personal attacks. Enjoy Yourself..!! And as Hal would close each column . . ..... Stay Well and See You Somewhere, I Hope.
