All AFC East, All the Time...

Kickoff to the 2008 NFL season is just 21 days, 21 hours, 1 minute and 30, 29, 28, 27, 26, 25 seconds away...Opening night, the defending champion New York Giants go head to head with the Washington Redskins....On this blog entry, there will be no talk of that game or any other game outside the AFC East, as a matter of fact....THIS BLOG ENTRY IS ALL AFC EAST, ALL THE TIME!!!!

My goal for this blog entry is for us, the fans, to have a nice season long discussion/debate/good old-fashioned trash talking hangout...I'm talking Jets fans, Patriots fans, Dolphins fans, and even Bills fans...Say what's on your mind!! Tell me what you think of your team, heck, even tell me what you think about my team...Let's talk pre-season football!! Let's talk about our off-season's!!

Now since we have 21 days, 20 hours, 54 minutes, and 35, 34, 33, 32, 31 seconds, let's post our predictions for the year...How the division will stack up...I'll start this party and hopefully plenty will follow...

AFC East Standings (and trust me I went through the whole 17 week schedule)...
1. New England Patriots (13-3) First Round Bye, #1 seed
2. New York Jets (10-6) Wild Card Team, 6th seed
3. Buffalo Bills (7-9)...I loved the draft this year with James Hardy and Leodis McKelvin...
4. Miami Dolphins (4-12)...Don't worry Phins fans, you will have the 3rd pick in the draft, not the 1st....

The pre-season schedule for Week two in the AFC East is as followed:
Pittsburgh at Buffalo on Thursday night....
Washington at New York on Saturday night....Brett the Jet gets the starting nod!!!
Miami at Jacksonville on Saturday night...
New England at Tampa on Sunday night....

Tell me what you are looking forward to most for this weekend's games...As a Jets fan, I want to see how Favre and the first unit works, obviously...I also want another look at Brett Ratliff, as it's possible he can unseat Kellen Clemens as the #2 in NY...

Oh yea, post a prediction....My prediction is that the Defensive Rookie of the Year will come from the AFC East (Vernon Gholston, Philip Merling, Leodis McKelvin or Jerod Mayo)

Let the game's begin....

Roller Coaster Ride...4/14 - 4/20

Week Three for the New York Yankees was a roller coaster ride, which started off with the Yankees ripping off three wins in a row...A two game sweep of the Tampa Rays and a royal beating of the Boston Red Sox in the Bronx...Those three wins were followed by three losses, as the Red Sox took a split in New York and the Baltimore Orioles taking the first two from the Bombers in Baltimore...The Yankees finished the week at 4-3 as the pitching game completely shut the O's bats down!!

Speaking of bats, it seemed like the Yankees bats finally woke up by scoring 33 runs in the first 4 games of the week, but than Baltimore's pitching did a number on them this weekend..If it weren't for a garbage time bases loaded clearing double in the 9th of Sunday's game the Yankees would have been held to 6 runs in 3 games...

Week three was a week that saw us get Derek Jeter back from a quad injury, but could also be a week that we lose Alex Rodriguez to the same injury...This week the Yanks had to play with their third catcher of the year, Chad Moeller, due to the injuries of Jorge Posada and Jose Molina...Posada was back DH'ing or playing first, but has not been able to play a complete week!! Better the injuries now rather than later..

My Week Three Player of the Week was a tough one this week, since two players deserved it...I went with "The Captain" Derek Jeter, as he batted .387 (31 at-bats and 12 hits), while pounding two doubles, 1 triple, driving in 10 runs, while scoring four of his own runs...He played a major part in all four Yankee wins...My Runner-up this week is Andy Pettitte!! He pitched 14 innings, gave up only 9 hits and 3 earned runs, while striking out 10 and winning both his games...

Joba Chamberlain also returned from his brief stint on the bereavement list and pitched in the final two games of the O's series...His season totals are 6 1/3 innings pitched, 1-0, with 3 holds, and an ERA of 1.42...He has 8 strikeout's while only allowing 7 baserunners!!!

Week Three also continued the struggles of the other two Yankees young guns, Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes!!!

So the first 20 games of the Joe Girardi era is a split...10-10!!!

My Six...

With the NFL draft less than a week away and my New York Jets drafting at #6, I've decided to do my wishlist of the top six players I would want the Jets to draft in Round #1!!!

My 6th ranked prospect is Vernon Gholsten...
Vernon is a workout warrior and can provide the speed that NFL teams look for in a sack master...Players who come into the NFL at the hybrid position, DE/OLB, usually can make an immediate impact...The one thing that scares me is that in college he disappeared for many of the big games and against some of the more talented teams in college football...I know he had the only sack given up by Jake Long, but stuff like that is gonna happen!! Another reason that I almost left him off my charts is the fact that the Jets already have Bryan Thomas and newly signed Calvin Pace manning his position...If the Jets are gonna take a player to sit and learn for a season, then it should be QB, not the hybrid...

My 5th ranked prospect is Jake Long...
Jake is without a doubt the best offensive lineman in this draft and it would only be wishful thinking to think he makes it past the Dolphins, Rams, FalconsRaiders or Chiefs...If Jake were to be selected by the Jets it would allow them to move D'Brickashaw Ferguson to the right side, where he might fit better...Say they want to keep D'Brick at left tackle, then Jake would be able to play right tackle and then move Damien Woody to right guard and bench Brandon Moore...A guy like Jake Long is way too tough to pass on, and as I mentioned before he only gave up one sack his senior year of college...

My 4th ranked prospect is Sedrick Ellis...
This guy proves that combine numbers shouldn't be the deciding factor for NFL teams...He had a monster, and I mean monster, Senior Bowl week...He stole the show and completely dominated everything on the field..If he didn't have to change positions from college to the Jets, I would have him ranked much higher than four...He plays with a certain swagger to him and not many in this year's draft can match his talent...Selecting Ellis would allow the Jets to shop there own Ellis, Shaun Ellis...Shaun's production is down and Sedrick is a player than can produce right away in this league..I'm very high on this guy!!!

My 3rd ranked prospect is Matt Ryan...
Lets all be honest here!! The only reason Chad Pennington is on the Jets is because Eric Mangini and company don't have complete faith in Kellen Clemens..There is no way a team keeps an 8 million dollar back-up unless they feel he is gonna start or they are gonna need him at some point in the season!! In my lifetime, which is 27 years, the Jets have never had a QB who puts fear into a team's defense..Guess what they still don't!! Matt Ryan would be able to sit for a year, learn the NFL and then 2009 would be his time...The Jets have set up a nice core of players so that they can compete for many years to come...Matt Ryan can be that missing piece on offense that the Jets have had in over 30 years!!! We need stability at QB, as does any team in the NFL...

My 2nd ranked prospect is Darren McFadden...
There is not one player on the Jets offense that scares any team defense...Proof has been the 10 yard dink and dunk passes for the better part of my life...Thomas Jones is a starter in this league and a proven 1000 yard back, but he does not produce the breakaway speed...He is a north/south runner, just like Curtis Martin, but will never get you to the house...The Jets need playmakers and McFad is the biggest play maker in this draft...He is not Adrian Peterson, but he can give the Jets the same spark that Adrian gave the Vikings..If McFadden becomes a Jet, I will be able to look at there backfield as the Patriots Super Bowl team...Thomas Jones is Corey Dillon, Darren McFadden is Laurence Maroney and Leon Washington is Kevin Faulk...Thats one nasty backfield and possibly 2200 yards rushing for the team with Tony Richardson leading the way...

My 1st ranked prospect is Chris Long...
This kid has it all...The heart, the work ethic, the blood lines and the passion and respect for the sport...He has been around the NFL his whole life and knows the game..4-3 or 3-4 he will excel in the game and no one in this draft is better!!! He will be in Pro-Bowl after Pro-Bowl and no one will deny that...He, just like Sedrick Ellis, would allow the Jets to shop Shaun and pick up extra draft picks..Since day one, he was my main target and if he becomes a Jet I will be the happiest fan alive..

Now there is always a possibility of a trade and if the Jets move down from 9-15 it would be to draft a CB and my top CB on my board is Leodis McKelvin...He has the size and speed to form an amazing duo with Darrelle Revis...Revis would lock down teams top receivers while McKelvin would reap from all the benefits...The Jets could possibly have one of the best secondaries with the addition of McKelvin...

The King and His Court...

De-Throned!! The one word that describes Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils...Marty's reign as being the Eastern Conference's best net minder has come to an end by simply being outplayed all season long, from October to April, by the one and only Henrik Lundqvist...The New York Rangers have posted an 11-1-1 record against the Devils in the '07-'08 season...All season long, Marty had no answers for "The King and His Court."

The Rangers/Devils first round match-up was very entertaining and it lived up to the hype that it was supposed too..Games were close, but in large part of the officiating...The officiating was blantantly one-sided towards the Devils, but they couldn't capitalize on there chances...Unlike the Devils, New York jumped on each and every mistake the Devils defense or goalie made and that was the difference in the series...

Another major story in the series was big breaks...If it weren't for pucks going off the Rangers defenseman into the net, the Devils would have been swept...Out of the 12 goals the Devils scored, minimum of half of them went off the Rangers defense...You just can't expect to win games, when you can't score!!

Now for my fun...Awards for the Round and I'll keep it all Royalty!!!
The King (Best Player) - Scott Gomez : Scott took over the series and completely dominated from Game 1 through Game 5...He was a major factor in every game and it showed on the stat sheet...3 goals, 4 assists and a huge smile on his face while doing it...You know it was super sweet going back to play the Devils and show them what type of player they let go!! I know Brian Gionta sure does miss him!!

The Queen (Biggest Baby) - Martin Brodeur : Is there any other player that would deserve this award??? His constant diving and whining wins it alone, but not to shake a man's hand after a hard fought battle is just very girly...Hence the "Queen" of the series!!! Marty looked tired and just couldn't take the abuse that the New York Rangers handed out...

The Prince (#2 Star) - Henrik Lundqvist : Spectacular save after spectacular save..Need I say more!!! All the pressure in the world on that John Madden penalty shot and he was as cool as the other side of the pillow...If this continues, us Rangers fans will be dancing on the streets just like '94!!! He dominated each game and simply outplayed the "supposed" best goalie in hockey!!

One thing Rangers management should finally realize if that we need Sean Avery re-signed before he hits the open market..Good ole' Monkey Arms is needed in New York!!! As a matter of fact, he is the heart that keeps this team pumping...

Can anyone stop Jaromir Jagr when he is possessed like this?? He had an unbelievable series and posted the most points for our Rangers with 2 goals and 6 helpers...

I also shoot out major props to the young core of Blue Shirts, Marc Staal, Ryan Callahan and Dubinsky, as they played one heck of a series and fit in and played like vets...

The series ended with Chris Drury jabbing the dager in the Devils heart and Brandon Dubinsky pulling the plug!!!

Week Two Review...4/7 - 4/13

The second week of the season was very unfriendly to our New York Yankees...They lost both series 2-1 to the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals...If it wasn't for their win on Monday against the Rays, the Bronx Bombers would have been 2-4 for the week, but still one game under .500 at 3-4 is a weak they would like to forget...The Yankee bats are still sleeping and can the real Robinson Cano, please stand up!!! This guy was my pick to win a batting title and he looks lost out there...The highlight of Week Two was Chien-Ming Wang's near no-no in Boston!!! A complete game, two hit performance uping his season's record to 3-0...He is proving to put last October way behind him!!!

The theme of Week Two in Yankee-Land was the injury bug...Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada were both sidelined with injuries for most of the week, but two others stepped up and played great for the Bombers in Jose Molina and Alberto Gonzalez...Gonzalez is a young defensive shortstop, who came over in the Randy Johnson deal, that wasn;t considered a threat with the stick...He proved that to be wrong!!! I'll get to Molina in a bit...

Mike Mussina had himself one fantastic start and one so-so start in Boston, but he gave the Yankees a chance to win both games...You can't ask for much more than that!!! Mussina, Wang and Andy Pettitte picked up the Yanks three wins this week...The three wins gave the Yankees a record of 6-7 for the young season!!!

My Yankee of the Week for Week Two is Jose Molina...His stats are as followed...(.375 batting average, 24 at-bats, 9 hits, 6 doubles, 2 runs batted in, and 3 runs scored)...It's a shame that Molina's week had to end with a hamstring injury...My Week Two Runner-Up is Bobby Abreu, who also had a solid week, by driving in 4 runs and hitting 1 homerun!!!

The Joba Chamberlain watch....Season Totals (5.1 Innings Pitched, 3 Hits Allowed, 6 Strikeout, 0 Earned Runs, 1-0 Record and 3 Holds)

Beginning of an End...3/31 - 4/6

The New York Yankee season is finally underway and the Bronx Bombers are poised to close down "The House that Ruth Built" with a bang...Joe Girardi comes aboard as the new skipper in town and chooses #27 as his jersey number, representing the hopes and dreams of championship #27 for our New York Yankees!!! Many questions will be asked and answered this season and lets hope that the Yankees upper management made the right decisions?? Was letting Johan Santana go to the Mets the right move?? How will the three young guns handle a full season in the majors?? Can Alex Rodriguez have a repeat of his MVP year from last season?? Will Chien-Ming Wang perform like an ace this season?? How will Andy Pettitte be treated around baseball?? Trust me, there will be plenty more questions to be asked and answered throughout the next 162 games!!!

The first week of the 2008 season had some ups and downs...First downer of the season was a rain out on Opening Day, when in my opinion they could have played ball...It wasn't the nicest of days, but these players have all played in much, much worse!! The wait was sweet as the Yankees took the first game of the season from the Blue Jays behind the good, not great pitching of Chien-Ming Wang...The Bronx Bombers finished the week at .500, going 3-3 with Wang picking up two wins and Joba Chamberlain picking up the other win...Mariano Rivera closed the door on all three victories!!! Boy, does it look like when the Yanks get to the 8th with the lead that its automatic for a "W"...Joba and Mo are the best duo in all of baseball, HANDS DOWN!!! Early in the season, the Yankees bats are asleep, but we can't expect that this to stay that way...Robinson Cano is my early pick to win the American League batting title and Alex Rodriguez is always the front runner for HR and RBI leader!!! The bats will wake up...

My Week One Yankee of the Week goes to Chien-Ming Wang...His line looks like this for the week : 2-0, 13 Innings Pitched, 10 Hits Allowed, 2 Earned Runs, and 8 Strikeouts...The Week One Runner-Up is Mariano Rivera!!!

Now onto my Joba watch...His Week One numbers are as followed : 1-0, 4 Innings Pitched, 1 Hit Allowed, 0 Earned Runs, 2 Holds, and 4 Strikeouts!!!
