A look at goals being scored in PL and Draws.

My gosh, I have a tendency to predict scores when taken as a total are a higher goal total than others, I mean, I picked about 4 2-2 draws in footy this weekend, 2 in the Championship League which "could" be right, more goals seem to be made in the Championship and the Saints, Southampton are a beast in that aspect. But I also risked it in the Liverpool Man Yoo games, hey, MUFC has scored 14 more goals than Liverpool this year (24-10), so I guess I picked this game with my heart, MUFC has conceded only 5 goals, Liverpool 8 goals and didn't half of those come against Tottenham in that 4-0 shellacking a few weeks ago. I also chance Stoke City Fulham going 2-2, I believe this could still be a possibility but thinking about it, Stoke City scores few goals, 4 so far this season, so I am guessing they can score half of their season total tomorrow?? Now it does seem like a bad pick but I made it. Fulham though has shown some fire lately, scoring 6 vs. QPR, drawing City 2-2 so maybe the pick has a chance. Stoke City's 4 goals for the year is the poorest so maybe some time, the levy has to break.

But since I did delve into it, here are "unofficial" counts on goals scored per week so I think actually, I should be aiming much lower than say, the 29 goals I picked in the week 8 games, not that the tally of total goals every week is that low but it is more of a case that one or two matches throws the total way high, I mean this year we've seen Man Yoo 8 Arsenal 2, last week we saw Fulham 6 QPR 0 and one Sunday morning, we saw two 4-0 scores.

Also, what is more likely? Draws of 0-0, 1-1 or 2-2? Or do we even have a 3-3 in there somewhere?? It's really not that pertinent unless you are making predictions.

We will look at this per the first seven weeks of the season.

Unofficial Count per Soccerway

Number of goals scored by week:

  1.  18 goals scored, one game postponed, Tottenham, 1-1 had 2 draws, 0-0 had 3 draws. Total 5 draws the first week
  2.  23 goals scored,                                                   1-1 had 1 draw, 0-0 had 1 draw. Total 2 draws
  3.  31 goals scored                                                    0-0 had 2 draws. total 2 draws
  4.  22 goals scored,                                                   1 draw each at 0-0, 1-1 and 2-2 Total 3 draws
  5.  38 goals scored                                                    1 draw each at 1-1 and 2-2. Total 2 draws.
  6.  27 goals scored, this looks like an average type week, no extraordinary high scores, 1 draw at 0-0, 2 draws at 1-1, Total 3 draws
  7.  34 goals scored                                                    1 draw this week at 2-2.  1 Draw total.
Even an average of goals scored per week would seem to be fruitless, it depends on the highly one sided scores but for the record it is about 27.5 goals a week.

Draws, 8 at 0-0,  7 at 1-1, 3 at 2-2. So 2-2s are much more rarer while this season at least, 1-1 and 0-0 is about equal.  This meshes with 18 draws so far in the PL this year.

Even if this info could be seen as meaningful, I would have to see it over a long term.

So, I guess, my 29 goals picked for the PL is high for this weekend but there have been 3 weeks out of 7 with over 30 goals scored!! But for the 3rd time, it is the overly lopsided games that skews this average. I believe one week had the first two games shown on the schedule netting 10 goals by themselves. It's interesting how few goals even with the Tottenham Everton match postponent were scored in the first week.

Real quick now, let's see what teams are scoring the most in the PL, the answer is obvious, the 2 Manchester teams are at the top, CFC probably 3rd.

Goals Scored:
Man City 23
CFC 17
Tottenham 11 and from one match less than most of the other Clubs except Everton.
Liverpool 10
Arsenal 10
Fulham 10, 6 in one game

Newcastle 9
Aston Villa 9
Bolton 9 , 5 in their 1st game.
Sunderland 9 so, with the most teams at 9 goals than any other team, would we consider this a sort of average? Not really. Sunderland scored 4 of these vs. Stoke City the morning Tottenham scorched Liverpool by the same margin.

Blackburn 8, 4 against Arsenal.

Norwich 7

Swansea 6
Wolverhampton 6
Everton 6 goals, 1 less game.

Wigan 5
West Brom 5 , this team had a real difficult start.

Stoke City 4 goals all year. Bottom of the pack.

So, I do think the above shows there is some predictability but a whole lot that isn't.

Real quick, in the Championship League:

Southampton has 25 goals, Leeds by virtue of the Friday win over Doncaster has 20 goals. Leeds struggled early in the season but haven't lost in at least 5 games. Doncaster has scored the fewest goals at 6 and are above safety as of now but by the end of this weekend's fixtures are bound to move down.

League 1
is rather equal Charlton and Huddersfield at 24 goals for the season, a number of teams with 20+ and only Exeter City apparently in the single digits with 6 goals after 12 games.

League 2 sees 6th place Port Vale (that is in Stoke City for those that don't know) with the most goals at 28!

UEFA Playoff Fixtures

Seeded Ireland vs Estonia , okay, no one should be overly confident but that's realistically probably better than facing Turkey or Bosnia or in fact, Montenegro.  We all know, last time in the World Cup playoffs, Ireland played France.

Seeded Portugal vs. Bosnia Hercogovina

Seeded Czech Republic vs. Montenegro and lastly

Seeded Croatia vs. Turkey.

In the end, anyone can win these. I believe in the group with Italy, Slovenia, Serbia and Estonia, one of the Italy Serbia games was given to Italy since Serbia's fans acted as a bunch of idiots... but Estonia played Serbia 2 games additionally so Estonia comes out ahead.

Montenegro is a good team as we saw them draw England.

There are too many good teams in Europe now, I will be glad when the 24 team format comes out in 2016.

Good luck to all teams.

How I'd rank the teams playing for Euro Cup '12 s

This is where it get's interesting, to the meet of the matter and acknowledging that the final places will be determined by the playoffs next month, the dust has not settled yet. This is just ranking the European teams.

1. Germany, better than their World Cup form. I have to believe they are overwhelming favorites for me at least to take the next Euro. I don't believe any teams are even playing close to them right now.
2. Spain, the World champions but not without chinks in the armor.
3. Netherlands, runnersup, it made sense to me that Sweden could defeat Netherlands in the qualifier seeing how the Dutch only defeated Moldova by a goal last Friday, they do seem to be at a bit of a lull.
4. Italy, the Azzurri are definitely in an upswing now.
5. Portugal, they have to go through the playoff process and did lose to Denmark away, Denmark is a team Portugal recently has had problems with and not just during this qualifying cycle.

The rest of the rankings are rather academic but could probably go like this:

6. England , Capello's not a bad guy but I don't think he'll do anything for them, if Allardyce were in there, I think England might have a chance to win this Euro Cup or be in the Final Four, Capello is too dadburn drab.
7. Sweden, this team is always about England's equal, they play draws, England too has gotten quite a few draws with Netherlands but Netherlands obviously has been a hot team.
8. Greece
9. Croatia
10. Russia, Russia and Croatia might be able to impact this tournament as both have done in recent years at "major trophy" tournaments.
11. Ireland
analysis on the Boys in Green. Ireland to sneak in and be champs?? Let's win the playoffs first... go downtown to watch the games in Irish or Brit bars?? Maybe???
12. France
13. Denmark
14. Montenegro
15 Bosnia
16. Estonia
17. Czech Republic
18. Turkey
Host Countries: 19. Poland 20. Ukraine.

Euro Cup Playoffs to be drawn

But for some Eurovision-style machinations, Ireland will go into the draw in Krakow as one of the seeds, alongside Portugal, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Based on the latest Uefa coefficient rankings, Giovanni Trapattoni’s team will face Turkey, Montenegro, Estonia or Bosnia-Herzegovina for a place in Poland and Ukraine next year.

First off, did Sweden get an automatic qualification?? Maybe best 2nd place?? Why aren't they mentioned? Sweden finished second in group E behind Netherlands.

So do we have that?? The playoffs, the draw probably to be held Friday would seem to be the way of the UEFA/FIFA type organizations, are already to be played in November, 2 games per playoff, home and away.

The seeds, repeating the above are Ireland, Portugal, Croatia and Czech Republic.

They will play teams among Montenegro, Turkey, Estonia and Bosnia.

Slovenia upended as I said was possible, Serbia, both countries part of the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and so this allows the Baltic nation of Estonia to enter the fray.

Not to knock Estonia but they must be the weakest of these teams, though Montenegro is a small country, in Fifa's rankings they've hit the top 20 I believe.

This will be the last Euro Cup with about 16 teams, 2016 will see 24 and surely, Ireland, Scotland and others will be able to make the tournament more.

Brazil Mexico, good game, Brazil Dani Alves received a red card...... you expect Brazil to come back, this is a fairly dramatic game.... Mexico up 1-0, 15 minutes left....Brazil to draw it up?? they have a chance but Brazil's goalkeeper just made a tremendous save against Mexico....Brazil obviously should have been given a free kick earlier, Ronaldinho on the pitch.

defeats Argentina.... yes, Messi was playing for Argentina, makes you wonder why Argentina with all of their stars honestly do not do better, they have not bveen a final 4 team in the World Cup since 1990, same as England.

H-E-Double Toothpicks! At Least Ireland won.

Here Ecuador just scores against us, the US in Florida, 79th minute.... Scotland lost to Spain, 3-1 I believe, so that is somewhat respectable, Netherlands did not defeat Sweden, Germany downs Belgium... of all the games, important games, this has not been exactly great but hey, the odds are against some teams when they pl;ay the best. Here is hoping the US can come back to tie this while my soccerway shows it at the 90th minute?? what in the world??

Belgium being cut to ribbons vs. Germany

How disappointing, Belgium fights Turkey for the 2nd place spot and perhaps we see how clinical the Germans are, still, Belgium has no defense. This is not like the old competitive teams they fielded and if Belgium could defeat instead of draw teams like Austria and Azerbaijan, they would not have to worry about winning this game or at least drawing. Turkey did not fair much better if at all and the teams out there are competitive, on their day a number of teams out their can match the giants. Rather depressing though. Belgium was going out all out attack and will come away with nothing. Belgium really does not deserve to go through with a performance like this. Turkey hosting Azerbaijan is currently a draw so in that case, I believe Turkey pushes through. Sloppy play by Belgium, the team of the Pfaff brothers would never falter this way. Belgium will be lucky if they only lose by 3 at this point. Unfortunately, we will likely see Spain dominate Ireland later. Germany has to be close to the best of the European teams though right now, I'd think they'd take Spain. Netherlands might hold their own.

It really makes you wonder why teams like Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland stand at the pinnacle...sometimes others will like Croatia, France was poor at the last World Cup but should be in that group as well and then other teams, even England fall short. It's not always on for the likes of Italy but they are bound to be very competitive at next year's Euro.

My Tentative Week 8 Picks.

I may adjust these picks a little bit: but as of now, I'd go with these, days ahead of time and if PensPackCavsFan posted his thread for predictions, I'd go:

I picked all English League games but things are heating up in many leagues now, especially the MLS, Vancouver whipped Real Salt Lake, NY Red Bull defeated the Galaxy, things are getting exciting so I may look to pick some MLS games. They seem unpredictable but who knows??

Liverpool 3 Manchester United 1
Manchester City 2 Aston Villa 1
Norwich City 2 Swansea 0
QPR 1 Blackburn 2
Stoke City 2 Fulham 2
Wigan 1 Bolton 0
Chelsea 3 Everton 1

West Bromwich 1 Wolverhampton 1
Arsenal 3 Sunderland 1
Newcastle Utd.2 Tottenham Hotspur 1

West Ham Utd. 3 Blackpool 3
Middlesbrough 2 Millwall 0
Derby County 2 Southampton 2

Now, let's look at what some of the MLS games are next weekend:

Looks like a fair number. Though, I shouldn't be the kind of fan who really gets excited only AT the end of the year, I'm a bit that way with the NHL as well. I may some MLS picks if I think about them.
