Your Favorite Rock and Roll Song All Time..WINNER

Seven months ago today I started the search for the greatest rock song of all time by the popular choice of those who would respond to my blog.  The verdict is in.    By a margin of 27 votes to 15, the winner was....

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

Since the vote is over, I'd like to know what song you all actually like best as a personal favorite.   Although Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was the winner over the course of this contest, I was just curious what YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE SONG IS.

So please post that.   For me, its pretty much a toss-up between 2 Styx songs.   I like Come Sail Away and the Best of Times.

A number of you inquired as to what I'd do next with my blog after this rock and roll song vote-in.  I've decided to move in the direction of baseball.   I want to put together the consensus greatest baseball team of all time.   So, I ask all of you, after listing what your favorite rock song of all time is, also give me who you think is the best catcher all time.   I want to take in the names of the greatest catchers all time.  Based on the response I get, on my next blog entry, we'll vote for the greatest catcher, either in an elite 8 format or maybe we'll just go straight for the #1 guy immediately, depending on what you all think might be more fun.   While we vote on catchers on my next entry, I'll take nominees for first basemen.   I like the idea of having a blog with alot of poster particaption and help.   It seemed to work great on the rock blog, so I'll try it in assembling the greatest baseball team all time.

Thanks alot for the particpation from all of you in my rock and roll blog.  You're all encouraged to continue to follow with the baseball theme with me.

By the way, shoot me who you like for the final four and the ultimate winner in the NCAA tournament.     My final four are Louisville, Memphis, Pittsburgh and Oklahoma.   My finals are Memphis and Oklahoma.  My winner is Memphis.   Sorry Sooner fans, I guess that makes you #2 twice in one year.

Vote For Your Favorite Rock Song - THE FINALS!!!!

This journey that started on August 17th when I started this blog has now whittled its way from about 2000 songs down to 2 songs.   During that time I've made alot of e-contacts and e-friends and I wish to thank everyone who has helped out in this near 7 month endeavor.   I want to personally thank the following posters who were there and voted in my very first entry on August 17 who still actively vote here and seldom if ever missed a vote.   First, thank you Muffin Man, you broke the cherry of this blog way back in the As.  KidDude123 was the second to cast a vote and I don't believe he's missed a vote since.  Posters who were also came along on my maiden voyage and have voted many if not every time were MandoTime, jonnyteach, vegab, D2Moo, JohnOdin and Markstaff.   I want to also thank you frequent posters who came along during the journey afterwards and contributed consistenly such as goodfellas, sfrye4585, IGetNoRespect (you got mine brudda), Rhino3434, Valpo-Domer, Bluesman24, epozz, DomN8_onD, Canacorn, misterjbq, freebirdmaw, Section_725, ClevelandRocks, DeadheadTrea, No_Name (you helped improve this blog), colts13, KBrown, jmw10, ponie02, UncleFester, thatcobra, t-rock-atx, BuccinGator, GolfCoward, nine5seven, darkness132, Steeler3, edwardsfan99, mfarley51, silver, scullcracker, Conquistador1, journey819, hockeydad55, MajorEReckshun, BadgerinMaine, ToddinNC, Happy4Jets and iamyo.  There are more of you and I apologize for leaving you off.  The so called "improvements" that CBS has instituted in the past 2 months have driven some of my friends away.  I'm glad many of you have decided to stay.

Oh yeah, I guess you wanna know what two songs its down to.  The final 4 had 4 hard hitting songs, but the final tallies weren't all that close.

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin defeated Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd 25-13

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who defeated Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen 22-17.

So the finals features the following match-up of 1 seed songs...

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin  vs.  Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who

Voting will go until 12 midnight Sunday March 15th.   On Monday Morning March 16, I'll post the winner in a new blog entry.   Enjoy the vote ladies and gentlemen and again, this has been fun.

Vote for Your Favorite Rock Songs - FINAL FOUR!!!

We're down to the nitty gritty now my friends.  After 20 or more different entries and hundreds of songs we have now come down to the 4 best rock songs as voted by you.  The Elite 8 had four match-ups.  The results were 3 blow outs and one tie.  Yes, a tie, so I have to cast a deciding vote which I really didn't want to do, but I've made my decision on it.   Here are the results from the Elite 8:

NORTH DIVISION:  Stairway to Heaven   walked all over Hotel California by a 28-5 margin.   Freebird had very little problem in pushing aside American Pie with a 21-11 victory.

SOUTH DIVISION:  Won't Get Fooled Again also beat their opponent, Money by a 21-11 vote.  The final contest between Bohemian Rhapsody and Born to Be Wild ended in a 16-16 tie.  When we went to the playoff portion to the blog, I discontinued voting but told you I'd only vote to break a tie, so I have to do that now and its not an easy call as they are both top 10-15 songs in my personal feelings as well.  In a very tough call, I'm going with Bohemian Rhapsody.

So this now puts us at 4 songs.   Here's the ballot box, have at it ladies and gentlemen...

NORTH DIVISION:

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zepplin (1) vs. Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (3)

SOUTH DIVISION:

Won't Get Fooled Again - Who (1) vs. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (2)

Vote For Your Favorite Rock Song - The Elite 8

Thank you all very much for voting in the Sweet 16.  You were all asked to make some tough decisions, but in many of the cases the winners were decisive but some were also close and one match-up was decided by one vote.  Here are the final results of the Sweet 16.

NORTH DIVISION:

Stairway to Heaven (1) ran away and hid from Don't Fear the Reaper (8) by a 32-5 margin

American Pie (2) beat Sweet Home Alabama (7) in a squeaker 20-17.

Freebird (3) brushed aside Purple Haze (6) in a 23-14 decision.

Hotel Californina (4) held off the upset minded Carry On Wayward son to win by a 20-17 margin.

SOUTH DIVISION:

Won't Get Fooled Again (1) ran roughshod over Brown Eyed Girl (8) by a 29-8 vote.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2) doubled up Satisfaction (7) in a 24-12 decision.

Born to Be Wild (3) took the magic away from Black Magic Woman (6) in a 27-10 thumping.

Pink Floyd's Money (5) scored the only upset of the Sweet 16 over Crazy Train in a 19-18 thriller.

So now we are down to the Elite 8.  It only gets tougher.  For some of you, maybe it doesn't as many favorite songs are falling out of the running.   I hope you have just as much enjoyment in this round as the other ones.   Voting will be open for one week.  Next Saturday at noon will be the cut-off for the Elite 8 voting and shortly thereafter, I'll post the winners and announce the Final Four.  Without further ado, here is the ballot for the Elite 8.....

NORTH DIVISION

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (1)  vs  Hotel California - Eagles (4)

American Pie - Don McLean (2)  vs  Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (3)

SOUTH DIVISION

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who (1)  vs  Money - Pink Floyd (5)

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (2)  vs  Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf (3)

Vote For Your Favorite Rock Songs, The Sweet 16

Hello once again and welcome to my search for the greatest rock and roll song of all time.  I just finished tabulating the votes from round 2 and I've narrowed it down to the top 16.  Both parts of round 2 were extremely close from top to bottom.  Every song in round 2 received at least 8 votes.  In the second round of songs O-Z, the lowest amount of votes any song got was 8, yet 12 votes got 2 songs into the Sweet 16.  There was a five way tie for the last two spots in that round and I had to pick two of them out and it was difficult.  For the songs that didn't qualify, here is the list in the order of most votes to the fewest.  There were many ties.

  • The number 17 song was Nights In White Satin by the Moody Blues.  Their 14 votes fell one short of the number 8 seed, Don't Fear the Reaper
  • Sweet Child of Mine - Guns and Roses
  • Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
  • Free Fallin' - Tom Petty (this is one I had to cut, which hurt, but I kept an eye out on other songs that tied for those last two songs and a number of posters mentioned those songs as being in their final cut.)
  • Rock You Like a Hurricaine - Scorpions
  • Sunday, Bloody Sunday - U2
  • Enter Sandman - Metallica
  • Roundabout - Yes
  • American Woman - Guess Who
  • You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones
  • I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
  • Sitting On the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
  • Hey Jude - The Beatles (wow, the Beatles are out of it)
  • Imagine - John Lennon
  • Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
  • The Joker - Steve Miller Band
  • La Grange - ZZ Top
  • Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
  • Aqualung - Jethro Tull

Without further ado, I'll post the Sweet 16.  The top 8 songs from the A-N bands will be known as the North Division and the top 8 songs  from the O-Z bands will be the South Division.   Here's the songs vote for 1 out of each match-up or 8 songs total, please.

NORTH DIVISION

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (1)  vs.  Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult (8)

American Pie - Don McLean (2)  vs  Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd (7)

Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (3)  vs  Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix (6)

Hotel California - Eagles (4)  vs  Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas (5)

SOUTH DIVISION

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who (1)  vs.  Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison (8)

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (2)  vs.  Satisfaction - Rolling Stones (7)

Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf (3)  vs.  Black Magic Woman - Santana (6)

Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne (4)  vs.  Money - Pink Floyd (5)

The next round after this one will be the Elite 8 where the winners of the 1/8 match-ups will face the winners of the 4/5 match-ups and the 2/7 winners will face the 3/6 winners.    I'll have this up for vote for one week.  The deadline will be 12 noon CST on February 21.  Look for the Elite 8 a few hours after the cut-off.    Thanks to all of you who participate and vote!   All will be fived and faved.

Vote For Your Favorite Rock Songs, Round 2, O-Z

First off, I want to again thank all of you who participate and vote on my blog.  Your support has helped this be more successful than I imagined that it would have.  This is the second of two parts of round 2 in Lazer's Great Universal Search for the Greatest Rock and Roll Song of All Time.  I had been calling it Great American Search, but since we've voted for songs from artists from Canada, Mexico, Australia and Europe, I figured I'd better expand that title a bit.   Before we get into the rules of voting, let me announce the 7 songs that advanced from Round 1, T-Z.   Those winners will be on this list of songs as well.   This particular vote was by far the evenest and closest of any vote we've had since I started this blog back in September.  Every song received at least 2 votes and 28 our of 37 songs received at least 5 votes.  Fortunately there wasn't a tie for 7th so I didn't have to make a tough call.  Here are the 7 winners...

  • Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who (16)
  • Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison (15)
  • Sunday, Bloody Sunday - U2 (15)
  • Free Fallin' - Tom Petty (12)
  • Roundabout - Yes (12)
  • I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 (11)
  • La Grange - ZZ Top (11)

For this entry there will be 18 songs to choose from and you may vote for as many as 8 of the list of 18.  The top 8 vote getters will be seeded 1-8 and my next entry will be the Sweet 16 of 2 divisions which will be seeded 1-8.  The rules are few.  You may only vote for songs on this list as they have already survived two rounds of votes and you may not vote for more than 8 songs.   And of course, the most important rule of all.  Enjoy yourself.    Here is the list...

  • Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
  • Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
  • Sitting On the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
  • You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones
  • Money - Pink Floyd
  • Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
  • Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf
  • Rock You Like a Hurricane - Scorpions
  • Black Magic Woman - Santana
  • The Joker - Steve Miller Band
  • Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
  • Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
  • Free Fallin' - Tom Petty
  • Sunday, Bloody Sunday - U2
  • Roundabout - Yes
  • I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
  • La Grange - ZZ Top

I also want to add, that if you have yet to vote on Round 2, A-N, voting will be open until 14 February.  Your votes will be appreciated there as well.   The volume has been down on that vote, but I blame that due to me posting it the day before the Super Bowl.

Vote For Your Favorite Rock Songs, Round 2, A-N

First off, I want to thank each and every one of you who have been participating in my rock music blog.  You've helped make this more popular than I ever imagined it would be.  I'm sorry that over the past several rounds that I haven't been as interactive as I have been in the past, things have gotten a bit busier for me.  Several of you in the past entry asked me about me thoughts of the Chiefs new hire of Scott Pioli as our new GM.   I say it was a great move, perhaps the best move by a Chiefs owner in the past 20 years.  As for who we hire as a head coach, I'd guess that we'll either hire Russ Grimm or Todd Haley.   I'm personally rooting that our offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey gets the job, but if it isn't him, I hope he's retained to remain our OC.

Okay, now back to the music.   Its time for me to announce the winning songs from the O-R category.  The 6 sings that received the most votes are...

  • Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen - 20
  • Crazy Train - Ozzy Osborne - 16
  • Sitting on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding - 14
  • You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones - 13
  • Money - Pink Floyd - 10
  • Satisfaction - Rolling Stones -10

I have yet to total up the votes for the S round, but I'll post those within a few hours because thats been open for votes for two weeks now and its time to shut that one down and announce those winners too.

So now we have made it to the second round of the playoffs.   There will be two installments in the second round.  I will list the top 18 songs that you all voted for from the A-N bands and artists.   My next entry will have the 18 winners in the O-Z category.  For this entry I am asking everyone to cast up to 8 votes from my list of 18 songs.  The top 8 vote getters will advance to round 3 and will be seeded according to vote total, pitting 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 in a bracket style.

The rules are few.  You can only vote for songs on this list as all other songs from the A-N artists have been eliminated in earlier rounds.  Rule number 2, you cannot vote for more than 8 songs.   And most importantly, rule 3,  have fun.   Here is the list...

  • American Pie - Don McLean
  • Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
  • Hotel California - Eagles
  • Hey Jude - Beatles
  • Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
  • Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
  • Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix

Vote For Your Favorite Song, Playoffs T-Z

First off I wish to apologize for the long delay since my last entries.  Other obligations and interests have pretty well consumed my time the past 7-10 days.   Anyway, welcome everyone to the final grouping of the first round of the rock and roll playoffs.  This is the 6th match-up of 6 groupings in this first round of playoffs.  Before I get into the rules and the list of the preliminary round winners, it is time to announce the winners of the L-N group.   There were 6 clear cut winners in a hotly contested match-up.  Two songs, Kashmir and Blinded By the Light fell just one short of creating a three-way tie for 6th place.   Here are the 6 that advance to the next round and the number of votes they received

  1. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (24)
  2. Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (19)

  4. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (15)
  5. Nights In White Satin - Moody Blues (14)
  6. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd (13)

As I stated above this is the 6th and final grouping of the first round of the playoffs.  The second round of playoffs will start on my next entry where we will have 18 songs to choose from and the top 8 songs will advance and then well do the same with the second list of 18 songs as well.  That will have us down to 16 songs and then we'll go with a Sweet 16 format to determine the outcome.

In this group, I need 7 votes from everyone to determine which 7 songs will advance to the next round of the playoffs.  The only rule is that you must vote for songs on this list.   All other songs by the T-Z bands and artists were eliminated in the preliminary round.   Oh yes, rule 2...have fun and enjoy yourselves.  And thanks to everyone again who have participated in this project.  Also, if you haven't already voted on my previous 2 entries, there is still time to do so.

Here is the list of 37 songs.  You have up to 7 votes.   Have fun boys and girls...
