Top 50 players

September 19, 2008 2:04 pm
Today we're publishing Wes Goldstein's annual Top 50 Players list.  As I'm writing this, the story is being edited by our newsroom. In the meantime, I though we could get a jump on things and see which players our users view as the best in the business.

So have at it... throw out your Top 10... Top 20... Top 50 or 100 if you dare.

Henrik Zetterberg - AO and SC get all the hype but Henrik is THE all around player right now in the NHL.

Alexander Ovechkin - Great energy / skill / and heart - definetly makes me watch a Caps game.

Sidney Crosby - great talent but still has some learning in the big boys league. Its not that I dont like the ladd - but I just feel he will be much better down the road.

Vincent Lecavalier - on a different team (with talent) he would be better. Jarome Iginla - consistent/brutish player - any team would love to have this guy.

Nicklas Lidstrom - best defensemen in the league

Evgeni Malkin - see Crosby

Martin Brodeur - his best days are behind him - yet he continues to impress.

Pavel Datsyuk - BEST defensive forward in the league- and he handles the puck better than anybody I have ever seen

Marian Hossa - now that he is a Wing - look-out!!!

Heres my top 10

  1. Alexander Ovechkin- Before last year i would've said Crosby but right know theres no arguing ovies greatness.
  2. Sidney Crosby- Close second, will end up with more cups than ovie probably.
  3. Nicklas Lidstrom- Consistent, always there, and he wins.
  4. Henrik Zetterberg- Better defensively than the first two forwards but there vision and raw talent edge them.
  5. Roberto Luongo- Best goalie in the league in my opinion, Brodeur would've been here a couple of years ago but hes starting to lose it.
  6. Evgeni Malkin- Showed the potential we knew he had when Crosby went down last year, The Line of Sykora-Malkin-Malone made the pens what they were last year.
  7. Mike Richards- Hes a battler, has offensive potential with great defensive prowess as well.
  8. Vincent Lecavalier- Another great young talent, Barry named him captain, Hes a beast
  9. Ilya Kovalchuck- He shoots, shoots, and then he shoots some more. Great scorer, not sold on what he does for his team. Think he is too much of a me, myself, and I player.
  10. Dion Phaneuf- who hasn't watched his hits on youtube over and over.

Honorable Mentions: Joe Sakic,  Dany Heatley, Martin Brodeur, Jordan Staal(watch him on Malkins Wing this year plus he may be the best defensive forward in the league) Pavel Datsyuk, Joe Thornton. I know i've left out some but this is my list. Feel free to lay into me on my thoughts on Brodeur.

Martin Brodeur - A model of consistency between the pipes and still a superstar goaltender even at his age.

Jarome Iginla - Quite possibly the best power forward in the game today

Alex Ovechkin - MVP last year. Can't not make this list

Sidney Crosby - I dislike him because he's a sissy and does not represent what it is to be a Canadian hockey player, but he's a pretty damn good player.

Dion Phaneuf - I fell 100% in love with Dion after I saw him absolutely massacre Denis Hamel in Ottawa last year. The most brutal body check I've ever seen. Hamel laid out 5 feet off the ice.

Sorry, I don't have the brain power at this hour to add to the list... I'll be back tomorrow.

After reading the article. I have to say. WOW

I would never put Zetterberg in front of Crosby or Ovechkin. They are at a level all by them selves. You can not compare either of them to anybody except each other. (That sentance could use a little work but i think you get my point.) And Toews as 45? I would move him up to at least the top 30. Gomez at 37? Paul Stastny would be a lot better at 37. Phanuef at  22? In my opinion i really dont like some the of the names on this list.
Heres a better top 10 maybe 15 if i  feel like it. In no  order except for the top 3

  1. Alex Ovechkin---He's Alex Ovechkin and secondly he is a monster
  2. Sidney Crosby--Just look at his stats
  3. Niklas Lidstrom---Mr. Consistant
  4. Henrik Zetterberg
  5. Evgeni Malkin
  6. Jarome Iginla
  7. Vincent Lecavailer
  8. Dany Heatley----LEAFS KILLER, but amazing player
  9. Marty Broduer---Best goalie in NHL history, no argument
  10. Roberto Luongo--Could use some work
  11. Marian Hossa
  12. Pavel Datsyuk
  13. Joe Thornton
  14. Ilya Kovalchuk--If he was on a contender he puts up 100+ points EASY
  15. Dion Phanuef---Amazing and still getting better everyday
  16. Zedeno Chara---How can you not like this guy, if you dont he'll step on you
  17. Eric Staal---If he was a playmaker he scores 80+ points very easy
  18. Chris Pronger
  19. Henrik Ludqvist
  20. Mike Richards---Have to have a Flyer in there
  21. Jason Spezza---How is he not on the top 50?
  22. Mats Sundin---Might be smart or could be my Leafs bias but i still think he is in the top 25
  23. Joe Sakic---Mr. Avalanche
  24. Marc Savard
  25. Martin St. Louis
  26. Daniel Alfreddson--As much as i hate him he isnt a bad player
  27. Scott Niedermayer
  28. Rick Nash---Give him some support
  29. Sergei Gonchar
  30. Sergei Zubov
  31. Tomas Kaberle---He is the biggest bright spot on the Leafs, and a great draft steal. But it could come to and end this spring
  32. Ryan Getzlaf
  33. Brendan Morrow
  34. Daniel Briere
  35. Dan Boyle

Ugh, Top 100?  I think I'll do Top 10, but in no particular order.

Alex Ovechkin....need I say why?

Sidney Crosby.....as much as it pains me to say it, again, need I say why?

Henrik Zetterberg......He's got tremendous offensive skill and it also comes with some of the best defensive play from a forward in the league.

Nick Lidstrom......he's got my vote as best defenseman in the league.

Dion Phaneuf.....he's the total package on the blueline.  He can pile up the points, play well in his own zone, fight....and oh yeah, he's probably the best and most fierce hitters in the league.  He's the sole reason why I like to watch the Flames.  And I cringe every time he winds up for a shot.

Martin Brodeur.....Hall of Fame goalie.  He's really the reason why the Devils ever have success.  He makes a decent team into a very good and sometimes great team.

Joe Sakic.....he's probably the best leader in the NHL right now.  Total team player and I would kill to have him on my team......kill penalties that is.

Zdeno Chara......he's too big for me to not put him on the list.

Mike Richards......I really believe he's one of the most well rounded players in the league.  Great passer, very good finisher, great moves on breakaways, hits HARD, fights, can shut down the opposing first line, kills penalties, plays the powerplay, wins faceoffs, brings great toughness, is a great leader (especially by example).  Name it and he does it.

Evgeni Nabakov....put him on a team that doesn't choke, and he's got a ring or two.

Jarome Iglina.....can put up a lot of points, is a very good leader, and brings a lot of toughness.  And his name goes perfectly with the Flames.

Daniel Alfredsson.....he's who I think of when I think of the Senators.  Plays both ways with excellence.

Well, that turned out to be more than 10, but whatever.  And there are definitely players that I didn't put there that deserve to be ranked up there as well.
