It is WRONG...just wrong

June 17, 2008 12:37 am

Some of you may have seen this on my Blog or on a thread I put on the NBA Boards. I haven't checked either at the moment and thought I'd post it here for logical posters to read...

Whether you are a Basketball fan or not, Im sure everyone can understand the principle of this...

The Cavaliers aren't going to let Zydrunas Ilgauskas play for Lithuania in the Olympics.

He is 33, they say it is because of his high injury risk.

He saw it as his last chance to play for his country, Lithuaina would've had a good chance for a medal if they had Ilgauskas.

Im sorry, but how can Cleveland control whther he plays for his country or not. Im sure there is a logical explaination, and Im sure I have read in the article. But it is wrong.

It is wrong.

They shouldn't have control. If Ilgauskas makes himself available, it is then Lithuaina's choice whether to select him or not. Why should his club have control of his availability for his country.

The Cavaliers should just let him play. If Im in Z's shoes Im saying, you let me play or I don't my contract bought out immediately, Im just not playing for your team.

The Cavaliers orginization, I dont know whether it is just me personally, but I am disgusted by what they are doing. Even if they do have legal and contractual rights to stop him playing fo rhis country, they shouldn't use them.

I understand where they are coming from, but they can't do that.

Imagine, in Rugby Union, if Auckland Blues say we don't want our star player playing for the All Blacks, cos he might get injured and not be able to play for us.

Just think, if the LA Galaxy didn't let David Beckham play for England because they wanted him to be fit and healthy for when he plays for them in MLS.

Or if the Houston Rockets didn't let Yao Ming play because he is oft-injured for the NBA and don't want higher risk of injury with more physical play. It would be horrible. (I know he is injured currently and may not play in the Olympics this year anyway, but that isn't the point)

Sure, you don't want your players to get injured but this is just ridiculous. I wouldn't want my player from my club injured either, but it's a matter of priniciple. It is his choice and his countrys choice whether he plays for Lithuaina or not.

Sorry If I have wrote a lot but this actually got me angry, I dont like this...at all.

Thoughts?

On a side note at the beginning of each of the years LeBron played for the US he has said early on in the season he is tired. There is even an injury involved once in a while, which I wouldn't be afraid to blame on fatigue from playing basketball all summer pretty much.

Do I hate that Z isn't going to be able to play for his country, yeah I do especially as a Cavs/Big Z fan.  Do I see what the Cavs are talking about with his injuries, yes.  There should be an agreement that Z will be allowed to play but only a certain amount of time per game no matter what the situation.

First of all, ZI has a tag of high injury risk guy due to his early career years. Afterwards, he played 70+ games each season and has not missed the playoffs any year Cavs made it. It's because he takes perfect care of his body. Maybe it doesn't show on him, but he knows his back and knees the best.

That said, I'm not surprised Cavs did it. They are running the franchise in dictator's way. Varejao and Pavlovic will tell. No thank you from that organization. And if someone should be said TY to, it's ZI. On the other hand - they run a separate set of rules for LeBron James. How come that he will be available for USA team? He is not labeled as injury prone, but no player is until a big injury happens. And if it would happen - wouldn't that hurt a little bit more?

Like I said in your blog, I hate it, but it's something we unfortunately have to just back and take.
