Good For Rutgers is Bad for Penn St.

August 10, 2009 10:42 am
As we keep making strives in the recruiting area of the Tri-State area we got notice that a 4 star corner Darrel Givens is very near to comitting to Rutgers. On National Signign Day Givens was headed to Penn St. but stories of problems has made Givens to reconsider and he has come to Rutgers.  With his cancellation visit to North Carolina this would almost secure Scarlet Knights Givens after theyd offered a chance to enroll and practice right away.
Here is some back ground of Givens,  6-foot-1, 170-pound defensive back from Indian Head, Md., is a four-star recruit from the Class of 2009 on both Rivals.com and Scout.com. He also played in the Under Armor All-American Game.

Penn State -- 31, Akron -- 7.

before you start talking about education...there is a little thing called the Acedemic Progess Rep ....please read it and find out where Penn St is ranked and where Rutgers is ranked. APR is outright ridiculous;  it penalizes schools if their players enter the draft early.

Dude....before you start talking about education...there is a little thing called the Acedemic Progess Rep ....please read it and find out where Penn St is ranked and where Rutgers is ranked. I hate it when people talk crab and do not have the facts....probably why they are on this site. Just so you know, the APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards this year posted APR scores ranging from 976 to a perfect 1,000. Top Five Football Bowl Subdivision APR Scores 1. Stanford (984) 2. Air Force (983) 3. Rutgers (980) Duke (980) 5. Rice (979).....Thank you...Oh by the way, many of RU kids are not on Probation or in trouble with the law like Penn St....so again get your facts straight.

Are you guys serious? We are talking about one player! Rutgers is no where near the top ten with their recruiting
class PSU is. I guess the same comment can be said about Texas, Michigan, Ohio state, all teams that PSU
Took a four star from their respectiv States.
Rutgers fans I am glad you can get on sportsline and voice your opinion, but you will never be PSU.
Oh and 890 SAT is reall impressive.

As far as what happened to Givens it seems that there was failures on both parts. he did have oppertunity to go to prep school first but had opted to go to Rutgers instead. It seems he met all of the NCAA requirements. The loss did hurt it looked like he would have had plenty of oppertunity to play at PSU in 2010.

haven't heard but we are the Tri-State areas Golden child .... thanks for the laugh. Good luck to Rutgers for 2009.

It looks like your last shot at the Sun Bowl to play a PAC 10 team. for 2010 the #2 BE team (unless ND steals it) seems to be headed to the champs sports bowl where the #5/#6 Big 10 goes now. so much for improving the bowl tie ins.

RU kidding me?  I don't see how this reflects poorly on Penn State, but if you believe Rutgers is a "Golden child" it might be difficult for you to understand that the onus is upon the student-athlete to meet their end of the bargain.  Meanwhile, I'm a born and bred New Jerseyan.  I recognize that our state university is oveRated - on and off the gridiron, apparently - and as a taxpayer I'm not too thrilled about lining the pockets of its success by smoke-and-mirror coach.

Givens didn't meet Penn State's admisssions standards and elected instead to enter a less demanding university's football program.   As a result, he will forego the opportunity to play in Beaver Stadium and compete for a national championship under the legendary Joe Paterno.  I would never wish anything but success for the young man, but it's his loss, not Penn State's.

Wouldn't this have been looked at and told to him when he was recruited? Very strange to have a highly recruited kid like this and then let him slip away on something like taking the wrong class??? I'm sure more of the story will come out later but surely this can not look good for Penn St. when recruiting.

As for playing in a less demanding University I guess you haven't heard but we are the Tri-State areas Golden child and things are looking better for us. Thanks for your concerns though, we'll see you in 2012.
