Picks for the Open Championship

August 10, 2011 11:58 am

Hello again to my CBS Team Golf friends!  It has been a very long time as I have been ill and not so capable of posting here.  I have been texting my play to the place I am obligated to do so, but have not been able to do any sort of 'presentation' if you will.  I have chosen the winner in 2 of the last 3 tournaments I have picked and 3 of the last 6, so I will try and get my plays together here for the friends I have at CBS.

I will be occupied for much of the middle of the day but will try and get back here this evening to post for The PGA that starts tomorrow.  Have a fine day friends.

Picks for the PGA Championship

August 10, 2011 4:15 pm

Hello again to my friends here.  Not alot of time, so I will get right to it here.  I have cashed well the last 2 months, so I am optimistic here also.

This week is the PGA Championship in Atlanta.  The course has been greatly lengthened from the last time they held the PGA here in 2001, I believe.  David Toms set the PGA Championship record in that tournament because the course was too easy, so they made it 273 yards longer, which really changes things.  A long hitter has the advantage here which is a major consideration.

Also a major factor will be the brutal southern heat and humidity.  Its really impossible to figure out how it will affect each individual, but physical fitness will matter this week.  It is one of the main reasons that I am not thinking that Mickelson, with his age and fitness issues, will make a run this week.  I think that the British players may be at a slight disadvantage also, but so many are playing well right now that I still need to include them in my picks.

Here are my picks for this week (I have different levels of bets.  If you are not familiar with the types of bets, please read back a few pages where I am sure I have explained them several times):

"CMB" Bets - Cover My Butt bets that I bet on guys that I think probably will not win, but I am not going to let them "steal" my money if they do.  I bet enough on them to cover the rest of my bets so that if they do win, I break even for the week.

Zach Johnson - 45 -1 (I don't like him here, but so many others do that I will put a little on him to break even if he does win)

S. Stricker - 28 -1

Full Bets

R. McElroy - 11 -1  [FAVE 5]

L. Donald - 14-1

L. Westwood - 14-1 [FAVE 5]

A. Scott - [FAVE 5}]

Dustin Johnson - 28-1 [FAVE 5]

J. Day - 28-1 [FAVE 5]

N. Watney - 33-1

Longshots (Half Bets)

B. Watson  - 55-1 (Top-10 at +500)

D. Toms - 55-1 (Top-10 at +450)

H. Mahan  - 70-1 (Top-10 at +650)

A. Baddeley  - 100-1 (Top-10 at +900)

I am also playing two non-normal plays:

$10 on Vijay at 250-1 (for obvious reasons) and also a half bet on him to make the Top-10 at 18-1

Half bet on Simon Dyson to make Top-10 at 12-1

Good luck, CBS Team Golf.  Hope we all do some cashing this week!

FedEx Cup Future Pick

August 23, 2011 1:17 pm

Hi CBS friends.  I got whipped by another longshot in the PGA Champsionship, which is making me wonder if not betting the Majors might be a good strategy as long as the top players are not winning the Majors.  I have had a great year in the non-Majors and lost a ton in those 4 tournaments.  I hope my post did not cost anybody too much money.

I am just here to give you a FedEx Cup future pick in case anyone wants to throw a few dollars on a longshot.  Of course, this is a homer pick if you choose to call it that, but Vijay at 45-1 to win the FedEx Cup is wonderful odds, in my opinion.  Only 3 people have ever won the FedEx Cup - Vijay, Tiger, and Furyk.

Vijay enters the "PGA Tour Playoffs" in 36th place.  For those who do not follow golf, the Playoffs are a 4-tournament finish to the season where they reduce the number of players after each tournament, with only the final 30 making the final tournament, which is The Tour Championship, where the FedEx Cup is awarded.

The reasons for these odds being such a good longhot play is because, like I mentioned earlier, Vijay is one of only 3 to ever win the PGA Tour Playoffs before.  One of the reasons is because he has had exceptional results in these last four tournaments over his career.  In these 4 tournaments, he has won 7 times and finished second 3 more times.  He is the only player who left who has that many wins and top-2's by far.  The year he won the FedEx Cup (2008), he won the first two tournaments of the Playoffs and locked up the Cup before the last two were even played.

Additionally, Vijay has been hurt all year with a balky back.  This makes the fact that he sits at 36 going into the Cup even that much more impressive.  The talk last week was that for the first time this year, he was able to practice how he likes to and at full-strength.  Anyone who knows anything about golf knows that Vijay is by far the hardest worker on the Tour and practices pretty much every minute he is awake.  Much of his struggles in the middle of the season were a side-effect of the fact he was not able to practice very much because of the back.  If it a fact that he is 100%, and that was the word last week when he finished 4th in the last tournament, then he has as good a shot to win the Cup as any player left, and 45-1 is an amazing value for a guy who has won the Cup before and has the record he does in the four remaining tournaments.

Please keep in mind this is a total longshot play, but a good value play.  I am not "Locking" this or even suggesting you to put a lot on it.  Its the equivalent of picking the 49ers to win the Super Bowl this year, which is obviously every bit of a "longshot".  However, when you see someone who should be about 15-1 going off at 45-1, I think its a good place to put a small bet down.  I bet a lot on golf so my bet is $100, but you may want to just put a little down and see what happens.

Vijay Singh to win FedEx Cup - $100 to win $4500

Good luck to my CBS friends!
