Derrick Ward - accounted for 24.7% of the Giant's offense last year.
Of the Giants 5,695 total yards last season, Derrick Ward led the team with 1,409 yards from scrimmage (1,025 rushing yards and 384 receiving), which was 284 more yards than Brandon Jacobs. To put that in terms that we Eagles fans can relate to,Brian Westbrook accounted for 23.8% of the Eagles offense last year.
Some fun with numbers... If you add Amani Toomer's 580 receiving yards and Plaxico Burress' 484 receiving yards to Ward's totals, we're up to 41.9% of the Giants offense in 2008.
Some more fun with numbers - Now, I know that Ward is a running back and these guys aren't, but just for fun let's take a look at the Giants' projected receiving corps this year and their yards from scrimmage in 2008:
TOTAL - 1,363 yards (46 yards LESS than Derrick Ward's yards from scrimmage last year).
Get this straight everybody - Derrick Ward absolutely, positively WILL be missed. I'll be the first one in line to praise the Giants' offensive line and they certainly had a lot to do with Ward's success, and I'll also note I like Ahmad Bradshaw as an occasional change-up back, but guess what... It's not easy replacing 24.7% of your offense, no matter what the circumstances.
Interesting fact, in 2006 Tiki Barber accounted for 40.8% of the Giants Offense 1662 Rushing 465 Receiving 2127 of the Giants 5214 yards. How much was that missed in 2007? Just because the Eagles are pathetic without Westbrook in the backfield and as usual he is injured again, there is no need to spew garbage facts to try and make the Giants offense look inept due to losing an average running back.
AN EVEN BETTER FACT, mirkins on Tiki (Good Call)...keep in mind Tiki is 1 man and he did about what Plax, Toomer and Bradshaw all did last year (Although Plax had issues).
I give much respect to the O-Line, they still have arguably one of the best lines in the game, but have lost a lot of the punch behind them (on offense more so than defense). To think of the amount of offensive yards the Giants will have to replace with these 3rd string and below recievers, rookies, and Jacobs.. is astounding. To be competitive in the NFC East they will need to consistantly get about 350 yds per game… last season’s regular season stats were: Giants (355 y/g), Eagles (350 y/g), Cowboys (345 y/g)…. and Redskins bottom the list @ 320. I see them dropping closer to the skins next year. For an individual game 350 total yards is an achievable mark.. and the difference btwn 350 and 320 is not much. But to get those 30 extra yards every week will be difficult.
Observation, and its my observation...and they always tend to vary. Not trying to spew garbage.
If anything, the Eagles will fall closer to the bottom of the pack. Just to name a Huge reason is the loss of Dawkins. Do you really think the eagles have the kind of talent at this very time to replace him?! Another valid reason is McNabb's health. You will never ever be able to convince me he is going to last a whole season without getting hurt. As far as the eagles recieving corps, they still don't have a true #1 reciever. Yes, DeSean Jackson had an amazing rookie year, but can he maintain that excellence?? All he is, is a Sinorice Moss that doesn't get hurt. So we already have something like that. Steve Smith is clutch, barden can be another burress without the distractions and nicks can be like a boldin. I know this is my opinion, but this is more able to hold true, than the eagles "winning the division" as some might say. The Giants have done so much to upgrade their defense that was already stout, and added depth and brought in some reciever that can fair well in this league. Lets not forget that marvin harrison is still out there and some recievers are to be had.
I guess we should all just kill ourselves? Maybe take next year off?
I can appreciate what you're trying to say but the analysis you ran doesn't have a baseline and therefore is inaccurate. Not because you missed it but because it is impossible to predict. You can't compare the production of people with playing time to those without because there are too many variables. That's a lot of research that says nothing and wasn't worth the time.
That said, it took Derrick Ward a month or so to find a team and during that time he approached the Giants several times with reasonable deals. My guess is that the Giants were not really as concerned about his production as you are or they would have given him to $2.5m-$3m he wanted.
Last time I checked Amani Toomer was still a free agent so If the Giants thought his absence was an issue they could re-sign him.
Either way, we hear it from bored fans like you every year and every year the Giants are fine.
Dawkins...it is so very hard to replace a monster like him; especially With his Leadership abilities. Coming off of a pro-bowl year, I was not in favor of him moving on, as was 99% of the Philly Nation; however, Sean Jones was the best available fit and best replacement we could possibly get. He is underrated, and played for unsatisfactory defense in Cleveland. Does he have to prove himself, of course he does!! My opinion, Jones replacing Dawkins is to Bradshaw replacing Ward. WE are both Optimistic, and just need to let the cards pan out.
Other comments...true your Defense is very very beefy, if you are to get far into the playoffs it will be because of your Defense. Your Secondary must step it up though.
Hobo - glad you have faith in your team. Continue to be a loyal supporter. I'm not bored, son. Just anxious. relax.

Gee, why stop there, if you add Kicker John Carney's XP and FG's to Ward's totals, Ward accounted for 89% of the Giant offense. That's how stupid your comment appears to be. How about comparing apples to apples not WR's to RB's you a$$munch !!!!!!!. The Giants will be more than fine with Bradshaw, Ware and the rookie Andre Brown. Go worry about your own team and Westbrook's decrepit body.
I have to go with my boys here, birdfan. Yes, the percentage between Westbrook and Ward is similar, but we all know how the Eagles are a totally different team without Westbrook-not so with Ward and the Giants. Bradshaw will be every bit as good, if not better. Plus, unlike the Eagles, the Giants made Defense their 1st priority-not offense. In my opinion, the Eagles are sacrificing their D to build their O. Dawkins WILL be missed. And just because Sean Jones is the best possible fit doesn't put him in the same category as Dawkins.
And Bradshaw will be just as good as Ward. And as far as our secondary goes? Corey Webster is becoming a shut-down corner...and on the other side is Aaron Ross. These guys both started in the Super Bowl. This is only Ross' 3rd year. He'll be rock solid soon. And Phillips? He has grown immensely since his rookie campaign, and is now helping Johnson in reading the D, and getting guys lined up in the secondary in the right spot. And even last year, people were calling him the next Brian Dawkins. Trust me...if we have a weakness on D, it's still the linebackers(since both Sintim and Boley have sustained injuries in the OTA's), and that's saying something. True, our offense may not produce quite the same, but our D should be more than able to make up the difference, especially now that we have the depth (even WITH a couple key injuries) to keep our guys fresh, and rotating the whole season.
Get ready too...I guarantee both Eagles games have been circled on every Giants player's calendar. You guys embarrassed us last year...I hope you're ready for us to pay you back, cause we're not just going to try to beat you-we're going to do our best to embarrass you, just like you did to us.
Im not gonna sit here and argue that the Giants have a bunch of #1 recievers but to call them all 3's and below is grasping at straws. Its just a rediculous statement by someone who seems to have some knowledge of the game althoug the whole ward breakdown is irrelevant as my fellow fans have point out. some might say your out of your bird..pun intended
Your second post was much better than the first; nice job.
Hobo - glad you have faith in your team. Continue to be a loyal supporter. I'm not bored, son. Just anxious. relax.
First of all, only rednecks use the term "son." Are you going to "Chief" or "Captain" me next?
Anyway, having lived in Charlotte for a few years I know how what to expect from people who reside in the rural areas of NC and SC. Now, Irmo, "The Gateway to Lake Murray" looks like a swell place to live hoss. Fact is, I reckon giggin frogs at the lake is a right fine time. Maybe you should stick to that instead of Giants commentary? I don't know, I'm just saying.
Not sure why everyone is busting this dudes nuts, he makes a valid point, I didn't want Ward to go and I think it's pretty ridiculous that they let him walk after the season he put out last year only playing 40 % of the game. Bradshaw has had a few nice long runs the past 20 games, but he's also fumbled a lot. There still isn't enough data there to say he's as good as or better than Ward was for us. The other 2 are rookies who we have no idea what we will get out of. Also, at least one of our starting WR is going to be someone we have no idea what we will get from them. I do know what we get at QB and that's inconsistancy. I mean fine be optimistic, I'm naturally pessimistic, the real results will probably balance out somewhere in the middle of our thoughts. I'm sure these boards were filled up with Giants fans exclaiming the Super Bowl ours because we got Dave Brown, clearly just because a player was drafted to the NYG it doesn't make him an auto superstar. I just do not believe in blowing off proven talent for the hopes that a cheaper player can equal that talent.
I know we will miss Derrick Ward. He was a proven player for the Giants and he had a knack for producing yardage, making people miss, but not being able to outrun a DE either. Bradshaw has had some fine runs and he always seems like he's ready to bust one for big yards. He's faster, can catch and fumbles. Coughlin can fix the fumbling issue. Danny Ware is unproven. I, like many, can't wait to see what he can do after seeing his preseason performance last season. Andre Brown is Derrick Ward and Bradshaw rolled into one back. He's a rookie so he has a lot to learn. Can he block for Eli as well as Ward has? Bradshaw's not to great at that and again, Ware is unproven. There's a lot of upside to our current stable of runners, but there's a lot of question marks. So the original poster has some valid points. We have history to look to as in losing Tiki and not losing production the next season. His yards and production just got spread out to others. I have a feeling the same will happen this season. In fact, I could probably gain 1000 yards rushing with the O-line we have. We'll wait and see how things pan out. If we can pass at all, we should have an easy time running.
Not sure why everyone is busting this dudes nuts, he makes a valid point,
Ripped. I can't speak for anyone else but I gave this guy a hard time because I don't need to hear about Giants short comings from an Eagles fan. Fact is, they have their own issues and the reality is it's all guess work. I agree, Derrick Ward will be missed and Ahmad Bradshaw has had issues but I don't need him to tell me that.
You, Luke, Mike, Prinz and everyone else and I'll listen. Some guy from the Eagles questioning the Giants production? Sorry man, I can't have that. If he wants to come over here with stats that don't make sense he has to be willing to take some sh!t in return.
That said, I was cool to him until he went redneck and hit me with the "son" comment.
Hobo, maybe birdsfan is really old. Old people call younger people "son". Mind you, I'm not sticking up for the guy as I totally understand your view on this matter, and God knows I've had my rants over stuff lately. He's just on the boards for some lite ribbin' with rival team supporters.
We all, Giants fans and Eagles fans, need the season to start soon as we are all getting a little too salty. There is so little to talk about right now, well besides Michael Jackson biting it, that anyone who goes on another team's board to talk about the obvious is getting their hides tanned. That being said, I still believe we will be fine this season in offensive production. It might take 3 or more games but when it starts to click, we will be the team everyone will fear, on offense and defense. And Eagles fans will come on our boards and spew forth their venom and we will ignore them, because we are the better team.
