I have an issue calling Brett Favre overrated. If you want to say hes washed up and consider him overrated simply because someone's willing to give him a job at this point, then fine.
The problem is everyone knows he doesn't have any game anymore, last season proved it. No one thought he would be as bad as he was down the stretch considering the last season he had in Green Bay (16 GP, connecting on 356 out of 535 attempts for 66.5%, 28 TDs vs 15 INTs and a QB rating of 95.7). And it would be a different story if this year everyone was expecting Brett Farve circa 1995 to show up in Minnesota, but no one is. You can't call someone overrated if everyone is saying he can't play, that's kinda the antithesis of the word 'overrated.'
And if you want to call him overrated based on his career then it's time to step back, take a cold shower and consider this: Most passes completed ever, most passing yards ever, 16 seasons of 3000 yards or more (Dan Marino is #2 with 13), most touchdown passes ever, and a ton of lists he rates #2 on. And I don't think most interceptions washes all that away.
If you want to put Favre on the list of "Top 10 Players Who Should Be Retired" or a list of "In Retreospect Last Year Wasn't A Good Idea" then fine, but overrated is the wrong list.
I respectively disagree with your opinion on this. He can be called overrated and not everyone believes he is washed up. The Jets did not think he was washed up and their fans along with plenty of the radio shows in New York (Craig Carton) believed he could repeat his performance of a year ago. He was definitely overrated here in New York. The Jets believed that with the free agents they added that Favre was going to be the guy who got them into the playoffs and therefore, over valued is ability which would make him overrated. Now you have the Vikings looking to add Favre basically with the same premise the Jets had, that Favre will get them deeper into the playoffs with the current roster of players they have. Meaning, according to Prisco opinion, the Vikings have value in Farve and they are overrating him.
As long as any team shows an interest in Favre they are over valuing his ability making him an overrated player.
favre wasnt overrated last year or this year..........he was injured though and most people fail to mention that the injury changed his mechanics and arm strength........................... .
He may have been injured but that does not mean he was not overrated. People fail to realize that prior to his last season in Green Bay his two previous seasons were very bad. When the Jets decided to trade for him they were getting an overrated player. He did not hurt himself until midway through the season and his play up until that point and all year was not consistent or good. The Jets were winning and his poor play was over looked. If you take a guy who, two of his previous three season were bad and you believe he is the game changer for your organization then your over valuing his ability and therefore he is overrated. If you heard Jet fans and talk shows you would have thought you were getting the Favre from 7 years ago.
I watched every game the Jets played last year. I wanted Favre and the Jets to do well but the reality is he played poorly all year.
Favre is overrated because he doesn't give the Vikings a better chance to go deeper into the playoffs. The man has thrown 84 interceptions over the last 4 seasons!
What's more, the Vikings are a predominantly run oriented football team with a fairly conservative play book. Brett Favre is going to go against the grain in both of those categories. Also factor in that the purple will be relying heavily on rookie Percy Harvin and 3rd year WR Sidney Rice (who missed most of last season due to injury). Due to the green factor of both of those guys, they are probably going to run the routes as it is drawn up and practiced. Problem is, Favre tends to ad lib on virtually every play. Maybe Bernard Berrian has the savvy to change-up in the middle of a play, but can that ad libbing be expected from young players?
Favre is going to get hammered and he's going to throw more picks than TD's whether he's healthy or not.
Clearly Favre could be considered overrated should the Colts or Patriots have considered Favre for their starting QB, but the Vikings? They'd consider Warren Moon if he said he was coming back out of retirement.
I wish Prisco would have better defined what he thinks is overrated/underrated. For example, he considered Matt Birk overrated... to who? He was cut by a Vikings team that had plenty of cap room and doesn't have someone solid to replace him. Who is overrating him now? The Ravens who lost their center and needed one?A guy is overrated if people think highly of your performance when it just isn't there. Derrick Brooks was named to the Pro Bowl last year despite having a HORRIBLE year. As much as I liked Derrick Brooks in his prime, he was the poster child for overrated players last year. But he is no longer overrated as no one wants him.
Prisco needs to update his rankings based on what is happening today. Ochocinco was overrated last year but no one thinks much of him this year so he is no longer overrated.
Whether Favre is or isn't over-rated is immaterial. That's just opinion, and everybody, smart or stupid, seems to have one. But saying Favre wasn't having a good year last season prior to his arm problems is just plain wrong. For the first 10 games last year, Favre was at or near the top of all the QB ratings in the NFL. And the mojority of his picks were thrown in the last quarter of the season. And, saying that Favre will come in and change the Vikings philosophy on offense is also wrong. I expect the Vikings to run even more next season than they have the past two, and here's why. If, indeed, Favre signs with the Vikings, his presence ALONE will force defenses away from the 9 men in the box Peteson usually commands. Simply Favre's reputation will force defenses to honest up with regard to the passing game, because they know he will find the single matchups and exploit them if they don't. Less pass attempts, more single coverages, a pummeling ground game will all positively impact Favre's interception ratios. I'm not a huge Favre fan, but the fact that he may be a Viking makes me worry that the Vikes may indeed field a team that will be a very tough one for anybody to handle.
I agree Brett is a great Football player and he has set many records through the good and bad! He isnt overrated i think it all has to do wit tha press!!!!! His success is all on him and the help of his team!
I can't believe I'm about to say this, but here goes: I agree with Iggy 100%.
(gawd, it hurts to even think that, let alone say it:)
I dunno if Vikings fans will even get a chance to see whether Brett Favre throws more TDs or picks; warped minds suspect that the first decent pass rusher to line up opposite Bryant McKinnie knock Favre back to Mississippi for good, leaving the Vikes once again with a huge question mark at the QB position -- and with even fewer viable choices than before. If the O-line actually gives Favre decent protection this year, I'd love to see him go into warped mode and give a good rendition of Rodney Dangerfield's "Ohhh! My arm! My arm! I think it's broken!" Caddyshack routine for some S & G.
Good Gawd, what a bunch of crap! . . . First off, the first 11 games of the season, Favre was at the top, or near the top of nearly every QB stat. He was easily a top 5 QB up until he suffered his biceps tendon injury. He was washed up? He can't play and everyone knows it? Hardly. The Jets coaching staff proved themselves idiots when they continued to play him even after he was clearly injured and unable to throw accurately or with any power.
Brett Favre will not be required to carry the offense in Minnesota. That's Adrian Peterson's job. What Favre will do is help open up the offense with quick accurate passes and effective play action. Teams won't be able to stack the box against Peterson. Percy Harvin will add some much needed explosiveness in the passing game, being (he will) more effective out of the slot than Bobby Wade. I'm not too concerned about Favre being sacked by a strong pass rush or blitzes because he's demonstrated the ability to make teams pay for blizing his entire career, with his quick release. . . Nobody in the league is better at play action and ball faking than Favre. He may not be what he once was, but with all the weapons at his disposal, he can be VERY effective. Kurt Warner is basically the same age as Favre. Everyone was thinking he was old and washed up a couple years ago, then lo and behold, he lead the Cardinals to the Super Bowl. Can Brett Favre be as effective for the Vikings? I think he can. . . I guess we'll see. Warped, this hating is wearing thin. I respect your opinion, but you're just hating on Favre because he's Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers. . . Well, not any more. That's soon to be two years removed. Get over it. He's going to be the Vikings starting QB, and should help improve the Vikings offense and make it much more well rounded, and less predictable. That's been the biggest knock against Childress and his staff up until now. By adding Harvin and Favre, the offense becomes MUCH more difficult to defend because on any given play, you have no idea where the ball might be going. Brett Favre will indeed give the Vikings a better chance to make the Super Bowl.
LOL, DUG-OUT. . . I really should have read further ( meaning YOUR post ) before I posted! Apparently you and I are of like minds concerning Favre, because other than a few things, my post mirrored YOURS. So hey, great post!
You guys are all crazy. Every single one of you are the same people that were on his bandwagon two years ago when he was one game away from the SB saying how great he was, now you hate on him. Hes one of if not the best QB all time, so shut up and keep sippin on your haterade.
Actually, if defenses are forced to be more "honest" against the Vikings this year, it'll be due to the addition of Percy Harvin and a healthy Sidney Rice. It'll have nothing to do with Brett Favre. If you think opposing defenders are intimidated by Favre, then you're living in an alternate reality where "beer flows like wine."
