They really need to go get Halladay. Can you imagine? They might as well just engrave the words "Philadelphia Phillies" on the 2009 WS trophy if they get Halladay.
If they sign him, they're not going to get Halladay. There is a reason that he isn't pitching in the majors anymore and its because he doesn't have a big league arm every start anymore. As a Phillie fan, I hate that this might happen.
I assume getting Pedro means they'd add Happ in a package for Halliday? I'd rather have Happ than Pedro, but adding Halliday would make me forget all about JA.
Pedro seems like a waste of time to me. They need to make a serious run for Roy Halladay. But they can't let the Blue Jays rip them off in the process. Only time will tell.
I am also assuming he was including Happ in a Halladay trade.
As far as Pedro goes, he will probably get hurt in the 1st inning of his 1st start, So, if the Phils bring him in, they already need to be looking for his replacement. At least Rodrigo Lopez lasted two starts!!!
No way! I definitely do not want Pedro Martinez on the Phillies! For the same reasons the Mets, Red Sox and Yankees don't want him --- he's all done. I could see 3 good starts left in him, but there'd be too many clunkers in between. So he'd end up on the DL, very quickly. He had some great years with the Dodgers and Expos, and 1-2 with Boston, but its time for him to enjoy his retirement.
I'd much rather see J.D. Durbin get another shot. And if not, does Eric Bruntlett pitch? He ought to with his BA.
Now Roy Halladay? That's a completely different story. Let's move people to get him locked up for a few years. Who are the Blue Jays asking for? Maybe we can get them to throw in Scott Richmond, too.
I'd take that rotation as well. But it looks as if the Blue Jays are gonna force whoever wants Roy Halladay to take on Vernon Wells as well. Not much of a need for him in Philly right now, unless we trade Jayson Werth in the deal. Not sure I'd do that. We had our chance at Wells when Bobby Abreu was being shopped a few years ago, and we shot that down to acquire 3 duds from the Yankees.
I dunno. I was hoping at the time that the Jays would want to include B.J. Ryan in the deal, but he has since been released. Someone who needs an outfielder as well as Halladay is more likely to make that deal than the Phillies, if this rumor is true. Lets hope we bombard them with a ton of young talent, to make them forget about Wells ??? It's not like they couldnt trade Wells in another deal.
The aforementioned starting five would also improve our pen, moving J.A. Happ there. Unless he is included in the trade ??? Lets hope he's not, because he'd look good next year after we 86 Pedro Martinez !!!
If they sign him, they're not going to get HalladayCan someone tell me what Pedro Martinez has to do with acquiring Roy Halladay ??? I know the Phillies are known to be cheap, but Pedro would cost only a minimal ammount of money, and NOT require giving up anyone. These 2 situations have NOTHING to do with each other, especially with Brett Myers out for the season.
Stick a fork in Pedro cause he is done. As for Roy Halladay every team in the league is going to be in touch with the Blue Jays about acquiring him. The man is a throwback SP and will step on to any team as the "Ace".
No one is getting Hallady without giving up pitching. If Halladay goes to the Phillies you are, at a minimum, giving up Happ and probably Bastardo too. As for Pedro...anyone who thinks he will "improve" your staff was not paying attention last year.

Pedro is a 37 year-old band-aid covering a larger problem. The entire staff is having a down year. So without getting a legit ACE like Halladay the sorry Phils have NO shot at a repeat. So get Roy and make a serious run at a repeat!!!
I don't want the Phils to sign Pedro. Think about it...he's unsigned...how many bad teams are out there that could have signed him already? If the Phillies consider themselves title contenders, they can't be serious about getting Pedro if struggling Major League teams don't think he can pitch at their level.
As for Halladay, It'd be great to have him alongside Hamels 1 and 1A in the rotation. I think the Phillies should be willing to let go of Happ/Bast-ardo/Lopez+Mayberry+whatever prospects for Halladay and Wells. If the Phillies acquire and retain Halladay, he'd drastically improve their starting rotation for years to come. The only concern would be whether Halladay would enjoy playing in a place like Philly. There's a chance he might want to avoid a high-pressure market, plus he might not be a "Philly guy" in the fans' eyes.
Pedro did pitch farily well in the world Baseball classic this spring. i was surprised that no one was interested in signing him untilll i found out that he still wanted Pedro of 10 years ago money. As far as aquiring Hallady You are going to have to give up the farm and 3 kitchen sinks to get him. Jp isnt going to give him away he will make a team pay through the nose for him. i still think they can sign him to an extension. The Jays system is loaded with good young arms right now i could see jp going after more of an immediate roster player outfielder and pitcher as the main pieces we have plenty of pitching prospects we dont need any more . well i guess you can never have enough but our rotation is already chalk full of good young guys. Magowan marcum Romero percey mills litch and there is more . The jays need to sign Roy to an extension to anchor that . So if you want Roy be ready to give up a minimun 2 starting roster players right now along with some prospects and be prepared to have to take Vernon Wells and his 20 million dollar salary for next year in the deal. My hopes are that Roy isnt going anywhere

Couldn't agree more. If anything, getting Pedro makes Happ expendable in a deal for Halladay (and if they can deal Happ instead of Kyle Drabek, that'd be sweet).
I like the Pedro signing, if it happens, regardless of whether they get Halladay, though. The guy was supposedly hitting 93 with his fastball when the Phils visited him in DR, and he looked good in the WBC. The way I look at it, I'd rather have Pedro than Bastardo ... for this season. Plus, it's not like they're going to guarantee him big money. It'll be an incentive-laden deal.
I love Pedro, he is my favorite pitcher ever. I'd take him back here in Boston but they don't have the need. I hope he pitches somewhere because he is good for the game.
Wait a minute, what's the big deal? It's obvious that Pedro needs an opportunity to get back into the majors, so what makes anyone think he's going to be breaking the bank? He'll sign for a low number for one season and hope he shows the rest of the league a thing or two. If he doesn't, it's no big loss for the Phillies or Pedro. He retires and the Phils continue to try out their minor league prospects and hope something sticks.
I'd like to see it, but I would not deplete the farm for him. Carrasco, Donald, Marson, Drabek, Taylor, Brown are all top notch prospects. I would only give up two of them with Kendrick and Happ. I would like to try to keep Happ, Drabek, Taylor, and Brown, but that will probably be impossible.
