Well the baseball season is coming to a end, well for me, so i thought we talk about the worst baseball trades in MLB history. Some trades that come to mind are : In no particular order.
The Boston Red Sox trade Pitcher/Outfielder George Herman Ruth to the New York Yankees for Cash.
The New York Mets trade pitchers Nolan Ryan, Don Rose, catcher Frank Estrada, and outfielder Leroy Stanton to the California Angels for shortstop Jim Fregosi.
The Chicago Cubs trade Ivan DeJesus to the Philadelphia Phillies for Larry Bowa and second baseman Ryne Sandberg.
The Chicago Cubs trade outfielder Lou Brock, pitchers Jack Spring and Paul Toth to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitchers Ernie Broglio, Bobby Shantz and outfielder Doug Clemens.
Tom Seaver to the Reds for Pat Zachry, Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson and Dan Norman.
You sox fans wildly overestimate Tek's talent. Was he pretty good once? Yes. Would Seattle make that trade again? No. Was it the kind of trade a franchise would regret for decades? Not even remotely close.
Dan Wilson caught in Seattle after Tek left. That nobody averaged .262, 11 hr, 65 rbi, and 55 runs per 162 games in his career. Tek's .259, 20, 80, 59. Wilson also threw out 34% of baserunners over his career, to Tek's 24%. After Wilson, it was Johjima. Would they have been better off with Tek? Probably ,but not by much -certainly not on the level of losing a HOFer like those other trades. Adding Lowe to the trade makes it worse from Seattle's POV, but a guy who went 70-53 in 6 seasons isn't exactly like trading away John Smoltz or Nolan Ryan.
Sorry Sox fans, your guys weren't as good as you'd like to believe. Only a sox fan would think Tek and Lowe for a reliever falls into the "worst trade of all time" discussion.
Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton for Bobby Hill and (I think) Donnie Sadler.
Trading an All Star calibur 25 year old 3rd basemen to your division foe would pretty much tell you where they thought the franchise was headed for the next decade. I have never been the same fan since that day, I dealt with 12 years of losing before that trade, but then I knew it was really over.
