triots-tame-london-romp-bucs-35-7/

The New England Patriots in the annual NFL International Game in London yesterday blew out the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-7 in front of over 84,000 fans in Wembley Stadium.

London was named by the Romans who, settled here first in 43 AD, and called it Londonium. It became the seat of power after William the Conquer came to rule in 1066 after the Battle of Hastings. So much for the history lesson. Yesterday, London was in control of Sir William Belichick, “The Hoodie”  and the Bucs were the unlucky losers brought to the block by the Tower.

The Bucs were never really in it as the Patriots defense stepped up and scored a touchdown on an interception and return by Brandon Merriweather before the vaunted Patriots offense even took the field on the game’s first series.

"They ran that play against Carolina last week. The coaches just happened to put us in a great position. I think the quarterback and the receiver were on two different pages." said Merrieweather.

In actuality the Patriots offense played a bit sloppy although the statistics wouldn’t really show it. Tom Brady had a nice day, dominating the Bucs at crucial times, completing 23-32 passes for 308 yards and 3 touchdown passes. But he also threw two INTs. The first on a red-zone fade to Moss in the back of the end-zone that should have never been thrown. The second, he had rookie WR Brandon Tate wide open on a deep post. Brady launched the ball in the direction of Tate, but CB Aqib Talib made a fantastic play coming out of nowhere to pick the ball off a split second before Tate was able to pull the ball in.

Brady’s TD to Wes Welker was a classic Welker catch. Brady hit him on a screen near the line of scrimmage and Welker does what he does best, weave in and out of traffic, make people miss and ended up in the endzone. Brady also hit WR Sam Aiken for a 55 yard TD pass. Brady had been flushed from the pocket and just before the line of scrimmage, pulled up and hit Aiken, coming all the way across the field. Aiken slipped the tackle of Barrett Ruud and then turned upfield and raced the remaining Bucs defenders all the way to paydirt. Brady’s last TD was a 35 yard strike to TE Ben Watson who, singled up on LB Geno Hayes, blew right past him down the seam. This was a matchup we called our readers to look out for during our pre-game analysis. http://isportsweb.com/2009/10/22/st

matchups/

Brady after struggling early this season in his return from injury, had only 6 TD passes in his first 5 games, has now thrown 9 in his past two games and the long ball has become a staple again in the New England arsenal.

"Tom, he's the guy that changed the game. He's the guy you worry about constantly," he said. "When you have a great quarterback like that, that's what he does and that's what he will do for you." Said Bucs coach Raheem Brock.

Wes Welker had another outstanding game, he is arguably the best slot receiver in the business. He and Brady have a great relationship where they are so comfortable with each other they can each read the defenses and each will know when the other will cut the routes short or extend them out. Welker had 10 catches for 107 yards with most of the yardage after the catch. He now has 46 receptions on the season and that is while missing 2 games with a knee injury. Welker is the best safety valve that Brady possesses, even rendering old reliable Kevin Faulk unneeded in this contest.

The running game while gaining 108 yards on 28 carries did not have the expected effect on a Tampa defense that had been absolutely gashed on the run this season. None of the running backs distinguished themselves this week after the big week of Laurence Maroney and BenJarvus Green-Ellis had against the Titans. The best gains were the end arounds where they caught the Bucs coming hard after Brady. The offensive line did a good job of pass protection but did have penalties problems Sebastian Vollmer and Logan Mankins each had two.

The Patriots defense had a big game with 3 INTs, two by Brandon Merriweather, one of which he returned for a TD on the game’s opening series. The Pats also sacked Tampa’s QBs three times, had 9 tackles for losses and allowed a total of only 240 yards for the game. Overall a good performance. They hounded  QBs Josh Johnson and Josh Freeman all day and brought good overall pressure while allowing them to complete only 11 of 30 for 151 yards passing.

The only good series the Bucs had passing was just prior to the end of the first half when Johnson completed a 33 yard picture perfect pass to Antonio Freeman for a touchdown over rookie corner Darius Butler. After that the Bucs were unable to mount any sustainable drives and the Patriots defense frequently put them in third down and long yardage.

The Patriots also did a very good job of limiting the two-headed monster of Derrick Ward and Caddilac Williams running the football. Ward had only 48 yards on 13 carries and Williams had just 29 yards on 11 carries. Overall, the Pats held the Bucs to just 89 yards rushing on 26 carries. The Pats front seven did a super job of getting in the backfield and disrupting the running game. Tully Banta-Cain and Vince Wilfork in particular were extremely solid. Banta-Cain was making plays all over the field and was a force to be reckoned with constantly.

The Patriots secondary again made strides and appeared solid throughout the game. Leigh Bodden, Darius Butler and Jonathan Wilhite were all solid in corner and Merriweather and Brendan McGowan were excellent at safety. Merriweather is fast becoming the playmaker the Patriots thought he was when he was drafted three years ago. He is making plays all over the field and now that he is comfortable in the defense, he allows his athleticism to fly around and break up passing plays. Yesterday was his first INT return for a TD in his career. McGowan is supplying the big physical presence and has been very solid in the backfield.

Overall, although the Patriots had some rough spots and appeared a tad sloppy on the field, they generally did what they had to do, and that is dominate an inferior opponent. Tampa Bay is struggling now, neither Josh Johnson nor Josh Freeman appears ready to take over the mantle as a starting QB right now so for the time being, the Bucs will continue to suffer.

The Patriots offense for the second week in a row scored seemingly at will against an overmatched opponent. That is a good thing considering the struggles they had, particularly Brady had in finding a rhythm  with his wide receivers. But the true test for this team comes after the bye week. The next five games will be against the Dolphins at home, on the road against the Colts, at home against the Jets, in New Orleans against the Saints and back to Miami for a return date against the Fins. At the end of the five game stretch, we will have a much better idea of what this team is composed of then.

But for now, Bill Belichick has to be satisfied with the effort of the team. They handled the hoopla associated with the London game as any other and came thru it very well. The past two games the Patriots have out-scored their opponents 94-7, Brady has thrown 9 TD passes and the defense is showing signs of coming together. Later this week we’ll bring any breaking news surrounding the team, as it prepares to heal up during the bye week. Until then, It is what it is…

Me too !! If Sam Aiken can ever find a comfort zone in this offense he has the size and speed to be very dangerous. With he and Brandon Tate and Julian Edelman, the Patriots have a lot of young talent at the WR position. I am excited to see Tate's potential in both the passing and return games. BB didn't waste any time, he only practiced for three days and was not only active for the game, but active in it.

One typo in there in is the Bucs TD was Antonio Bryant, not Antonio Freeman .....ooops ! was having flashbacks! Tongue out

We'll see what happens after the bye week, they have five real tough games in a row, the Dolphins (twice) the Colts, Jets and Saints. The important games are obviously the divsion games, but the Colts and Saints are good barometers of where this team is at.

Antonio Freeman .....ooops ! was having flashbacks! Tongue outIt's your age dear!

Great post as always, was it me or after Tom Brady's second pick Brandon Tate did not see the field again?  He looks a big lad, lets hope he has the talent to match the hyperbole around the kid. He was supposed to be a first round talent who slipped due to injury and off the field issues.  Steve, one thing you and me have in common (apart from the fact we both love our single malts) is we like Benjamin Watson, he is having a really solid year I wish we could see him more in the passing game, especially going down the seams.

I still don't like the running game approach, it was horrible again this week, Laurence Maroney in my opinion ran hard, picked 2/3 first downs with tough short yardage runs yet it seems everyone and his dog wants to blast the guy.  He is not getting enough repetitions to get a rhythm going and I just don't understand why.  I know we are a passing team but come Novemeber and December this team better have found a way to run the football a whole lot better than it has to date.

The next five games will go a long way to determine the fate of the teams, I will settle for the double over the Dolphins (NOT going to be easy) and a win over the Jets. On the road to the Saints and Colts are probably two of the toughest matches you could possibly have in the NFL right now, we will have to be outstanding and flawless to take either one of those games.

On the road to the Saints and Colts are probably two of the toughest matches you could possibly have in the NFL right now, we will have to be outstanding and flawless to take either one of those games.Couldn't agree more neil, actually the Jets and Dolphins have primed themselves for the bad weather, being the #1 and #2 teams of running the football. The Jets are averaging 184 yards per game and the Dolphins 170, both excellent numbers. When the weather turns bad in the late going, they will be able to pound the ball, although the loss of Leon Washington and Patrick Cobbs respectively will hurt each team.

Both of those teams however, have issues throwing the ball right now, so that may even things out a bit. I also agree that the Patriots need to to run the ball better than they have as an average but the Colts right now are even more one-dimensional than the Pats. The Pats are averaging 115 yards per game on the ground, the Colts only 91.7. Surprising considering they added Donald Brown to Joseph Addai. But so far this season, that's been off-set by the play of Peyton Manning. Many "experts" picked a big down year for him. I think he's playing as well, if not better than he ever has. He still has Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark but the play of the young WRs has to be a huge lift for them. No one is lamenting the loss of Marvin Harrison in Indy right now. But the Colts haven't found that balance yet that you need to be successful in January. So after they turn on the "heat" and "crowd noise".....Tongue out, that should still be a very tough test for the Pats. Their defense always seems to play the "A" game against New England so it will be a tough road game.

Nobody can beat the Saints right now, I was watching that game and just before the half it was 24-3 and it looked like Miami may even make it 31-3 and then everything changed. If Drew Brees hadn't changed coach Sean Payton's mind about eschewing the FG for a TD, I still think they lose. That late TD changed the entire complexion of the game.

Back to the Pats, Brandon Tate did play on Special Teams and did get in a few snaps on offense after that, but they didn't throw his way. I have been harping for years about Benjamin Watson being underutilized in the passing game. With the four wide sets, he can be easily isolated on a LB and there isn't one who can run with him. He was as wide open as one could get on that TD.... ok I'll leave it alone. LOL

Hopefully after the bye, some of the dinged up guys can come back, Sammy Morris, Fred Taylor to help the rushing offense, although I think Laurence Maroney plays better when they are out. Maybe it is a mental thing where he only gets a few snaps and feels he has to make every carry a big one and dances looking for a big opening. Because when they are out, it seems he does much less of that. The running defense will be key in the three games against New York and Miami, the Pats rushing defense hasn't been great so far this season. So we'll see, but with Junior Seau back, only early downs he will help that.

You know I am tired of defending Laurence Maroney. He is what he is, his running style has not changed one iota since he left Minnesota. There are many different kinds of back, he never will be the Brandon Jacobs type, he is a slashing runner not a powerback.

Do you think any Patriots fans ever note they NEVER put another back or lead blocker in the backfield with him!!! Not saying he needs one but that is his style of running, he is suited to a one back set and that means the line better make something happen in front of him.

Players get paid and judged on results generally speaking, the guy does "dance" (I hate that description) if that is the right word but he averages 4.3 yards per carry on a team that has failed to average 4 yards a carry in a season for 17 out of the last 20 times!!!!

By the way I am not comparing the two but Barry Sanders was a dancer, he also had more runs for losses than any player in NFL history, and by a mile too, guess he was garbage too.

He is the teams alltime leading kick returner for average and (that includes Ellis Hobbs)

He averages over 10 yards per reception (there are many receivers in the league who don't average that production)

He is NOT used to the best of his ability, you have to give any running back enough plays  so he can get into a rhythm. I wonder how good Tom Brady would look if he threw the ball 8 to 15 times per game!!!

This guy is a game breaker, the only valid knock on him in my book is his durabilty.

I am not saying he is world beater but he is a good solid starting NFL runningback he just needs to stay healthy and get his chances, maybe they are trying to save him for the bad weather later in the season.  Funny how he does well when the games are on the line, funny how the coaching staff seems to trust him when the season is on the line!

Okay I will get off my soapbox!!!!

He is the teams alltime leading kick returner for average and (that includes Ellis Hobbs)That was going into this season, add in his 9 KRs for 208 yards and his career average is 37 returns for 991 or a 26.78 avg. Hobbs is as of right now back on top,  Tongue out sorry couldn't resist ! although I think Brandon Tate may have something to say about that. I think he has that much upside!

I agree with you about Laurence Maroney, once he gets in the open he is going to be tough to either catch or bring down. They just haven't done a good job of springing him out there. That's why I was so hyper about getting him into the passing game, which seems to have taken a back seat again. Kind of reminds you of Benjamin Watson doesn't it. The Patriots haven't been a good running team since the 70-80's. The past two years, they've run the ball more effectively, although not as well as most of us would want ! LOL

Yes I remember the days of Barry Sanders, he could be tackled for a loss on about 8 out of 10 plays, but on #11 lookout! I remember one Sunday night against the Patriots, he made about 9 guys miss between the 15 yard line and the endzone, and the Lions crowd went wild! He was special.

Hobbs is as of right now back on top,   sorry couldn't resist !Yes, but you have not included his 109 yard (New NFL Record) 109 yard return for a TD against the Dolphins in two weeks time which puts him at 28.95 yards per!!!!!
