Clinton Portis, RB, Washington Redskins
The inevitable changes with the coaching staff could have plenty to do with Portis’ situation, but he clearly has never meshed all that well with the current regime. Moreover, he’s struggling behind an offensive line that isn’t opening holes, and he has been minimized on third downs, with Ladell Betts(notes) taking more of a role in the passing game. The larger issue is starting to become Portis’ age. He turns 29 before the start of next season, and isn’t an explosive, big-play running back at this stage of his career. Depending on what the next coaching staff wants, he still represents a solidly tradable commodity for other teams that may only be a piece or two away from a sustained playoff run. And with a large chunk of his $7.19 million salary guaranteed next season, Portis will be entering the bloated back end of a deal the team likely won’t want to pay starting in 2011. He knows that, which makes this offseason the last, best striking time for a trade and new contract that will provide him additional guaranteed money through his last few prime years.

So I was reading on Yahool Sports that Clinton Portis has over stayed his welcome in Washington. To me that makes no since considering that he has put up over 6593 total rushing yards and 39 Rushing TDs in the last 78 games w/ the Redskins. That isnt bad. The Skins really havent had the best Oline the last couple of years and Jason Campbell doesnt help.

Now I dont follow the team that much but as an outsider looking in. I really cant agree with this Yahoo writer Charles Robinson.

With all the problems the Redskins have would it be smart to get rid of a back who avg 4.2 yards a carry and just about 90 rushing yards a game.

Jason Campbell and Jim Zorn have over stayed the welcome. How about Snyder?

Portis has done great things for this franchise since he got here, but yes, it's time to part ways with him.  It's no secret that we need to rebuild and you don't do that with RB's with huge contracts who are on the down side of their careers.

I don't think you need a Redskins fan to tell you that Snyder needs to go.  Anyone in the country who follows football can tell you that he's a terrible owner and a poison to this team.

The real question on Clinton Portis is will we ever have a line for him to run behind before its too late.  I think the Redskins honestly need to consider trading him for some draft picks before his value is gone.  Portis is at the end of his career, unfortunately for running backs it like turning a light switch on and off, one day there great and the next day they've lost a step.  The redskins need to repair an offensive line from top to bottom including the backups which will take time and cp doesn't have time his days are numbered like all RB's that hit 30.  CP probably has two or three good years left and he will decline quickly.  The redskins will probably take two years to get a half way decent oline so it would be better for the skins to start looking at trading portis for draft picks and get rid of a cancer who doesn't want to practice or play in the preseason.  The redskins need to build a team that becomes cohesive and that doesn't only happen on sundays, it starts in training camp, preseason and midweek practices.
