With Rashard Lewis becoming the first relatively high profile player to be punished for "abnormal testosterone levels," here's the question:

To what extent are steroids and HGH affecting the NBA today?

A) A lot... This would be the MLB in the 1990's, or multiple players on each team

B) Moderately... This would be 5 - 15% of players having futzed around with illegals, or about 1 player per team

C) Minimally... 1 - 5% of the league has tried it, or about 1 player on every 2-3 teams

D) Not at all... No one is doing nothing and Rashard Lewis just took the wrong supplement by accident

I say 1-5 % of players but I dont really know much about the effect of steroids.  I've read on here that steroids aren't really good for a  basketball players body.

I know ur more informed about steroids, whats ur take on it?

Well if you looked at my rippling body, you'd understand just how right you are...chicks dig the longball, what can I say?

Steroids can be used to amplify anything. There is no such thing as a sport where steroids could not help you because each different drug does a different thing. Every steroid is a snowflake.

Furthermore, HGH was virtually built for basketball. HGH helps you to recover and basketball is a grind on the body.

But the real issue here is anectdotal to me. Just like in the MLB in the 1990's you could look at those guys and just say "Wow, McGwire is not a normal person" you can look at a ton of these guys in the NBA and say, "Wow, these guys are just not normal." Look at the average NBA body 15 years ago, there has been major major evolution over the past few seasons and people just don't look like that without serious assistance in muscle recruitment. Some of that is advancement in nutrition and some of that is "advancement in nutrition."

And there's no reason not to - Rashard Lewis got caught and no one is going to be chanting "Ster-oids!" I would bet a lot of money that there are multiple players on every team (and a number of marquee guys) who have in the past or are continuing to employ steroids and/or HGH.

Just like in the MLB in the 1990's you could look at those guys and just say "Wow, McGwire is not a normal person" you can look at a ton of these guys in the NBA and say, "Wow, these guys are just not normal."Whether people want to admit it or not there are quite a few players in the NBA now that deep down you just know something is up.  I agree with most everything that peter has said and think that steroids are a problem in the NBA and will continue to become a bigger problem unless they slap it to some of these big name players that are obviously using.

This will never happen of course because at the moment stern is trying to build a squeky clean image for basketball and globalize the NBA.  I think the state that the NBA is in right now it could not handle a major steroids scandal with one of the major faces of the league.  So do not fear, all of you homers out there can continue watching your favorite players dunking on 14 foot goals when they weigh as much as a linebackers.  Also players that are 6'8" 250 pounds and they are quicker and stronger than players half of their size.  Read between the lines people.  You can't tell me somethings not right with this.

Well Lebron is pretty obviously on something or another... but he ain't the only one.

Kobe sure recruited a lot of muscle over the years and has played through virtually every injury possible.

Dwight Howard... once one guy does it, you are an idiot not to try and keep up. Say what you will about the ethics of it, the guys who did steroids in baseball made a whole bunch more money than those who did not. It's an absurd competitive advantage and

For anyone who wants to know what steroids really are, check out the movie "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" They go through it.

And wait till gene therapy really works. Then you won't be coaxing hormones out of glands, you'll be changing genetic makeup. You will literally be able to turn into whatever you can afford. And it ain't that far away.

Steroids are in the NBA for sure. Look at the difference between the 80's and today. It is a freak show. I am with IP 100% in that I think 2+ players on each team are using. I would not be shocked if 100 players are using leaguewide. I understand that there are a lot of supplements out there now and diets fro that matter that were not around in the 1980s but you are fooling yourself to think that the NBA is the only Major League Sport that does not have a problem with steroids. I think the NFL is the worst for obvious reasons but power has its place in the NBA as well.

Shhhhhhhhh but do not tell anyone. But it not like Stern would do anything about it right?

"Bigger, Faster, Stronger"An excellent movie, on youtube in parts if I'm not mistaken.

Like IP was saying steroids aren't just to get HUGE muscles.  It is about being able to recover quicker then the body is used to.  I've used some of those free sample things before a workout before and if those things aren't some kind of steroid I don't know what is.  Last year I went in the gym and was squatting 225, I took something or other (on the shelf at GNC) and put 275 up.

I would venture that 75% of the guys take something of the sort that I just mentioned.  It isn't necessarily a steriod but it definitely inhances their performance.   The FDC doesn't make supplement companies put exactly what is in their product on the label.  They can put MightyMouse's Blend and that is allowed.

You are correct sir, the business of body is booming and it is as regulated as the bailout funds. A guy I used to coach baseball with went on a cycle and mind you, this is a 40 year old man who was already in terrific shape and he gained 25 pounds of pure muscle in about 5 weeks.

It is a freak show

Pretty much...
And you're right! Bigger, Faster, Stronger is on youtube! I would totally recommend it for any sports fan - that is what steroids really are.

Its getting to the point now we're I assume players are using until proven otherwise. I would bet the majority of players in the NBA use some sort of body enhancer, be it a steroid, HGH, supplement, etc. I dont think Rashard Lewis is the exception, I think he's just the first to get caught. You may not have high profile players getting caught all the time like in MLB, but I doubt many players if at all are getting by on god given ability and results from the weightroom.

I seriously doubt that there are steroids in the NBA because unlike the MLB, the NBA has had random drug testing in place for more then the last decade or two. Not sure when they started the testing, but I know they had it back when Isaiah Rider played for the Lakers because he was put on permanent disability for refusing to take the drug test.  The NBA has care considerably more then the Major League Baseball which didn't care what players did

I chose B. Never know, but I would say at least 1 player from each team.

Hugely I highly doubt it.

As for a handful I think their is more than just a handful. That is just what I think about it.

i agree with TLF on steroids

however i firmly believe that just about every athelete in every sport is using HGH as it is impossible to test for and give multiple advantages that IP already went over.

Do you guys know how easy it is to pass a drug test?  A lot of these drugs aren't even able to be picked up by the tests they run.  Random doesn't mean anything either.  There is a list and things get told to people before hand.  Even if it was completely random, there are so many ways to pass.  I can put a little bit of a certain substance on my fingertip and dip it in my urine and poof I pass.

Yeah i got a bad feeling about Steroids and the NBA. My gut says within 5 years the NBA's gonna have a problem about the size baseballs got. I mean theres several big name stars that are obviously on something, i mean Howard and LeBron comon does anyone honestly think there clean?

I'm saying hell yeah there is - the wear and tear of the NBA with the fouls and hitting the floor, Steroids help with recovery - heck, I remember Bonds saying it helps with his recovery BUT yes the after math of increased muscle and size are a benefit.

Stern DOES NOT every want to compromise the players (espeically star talent) in which the league is built on, unless they have a freaking needle in their shoulder or any other body part walking out to a game, NOTHING will be done about it
It's like saying every athlete in the NBA is "weed" free - yeah right!

Kobe recruited alot of muscle...?....kobe is only 210 lbs.....Kobe only had 1 season where he exceeded 215 lbs and that the year after the sholder injury where hecame in at 220 and absolutely took the league by storm.......It's still a possibilty that he's taken something....but his body type does'nt indicate anything.........

With my dislike of LeBron James aside........I am almost and absolutely possitive that LeBron james is and/or was on HGH or steroids......250+ lbs, extremely fast......i dont think that that is normal

Ok I didn't know it could help an NBA player but now that I see it does than i'm with WCF on this.  If one guy is using something than everyone is going to want to be at that level.  Guilty until proven innocent.

Oh and Stern would not mind this at all people.  "Random" testing, yeah right!  Just like the NBA lead an investigation on the NBA....

My cousin was and still is good friends with super bust WR Mike Williams and he used to tell us about how "random" these drug tests are.  Dude used to know about a month or 2 in advance before they would even schedule a day for him to "randomly" come test.
