I just read an interesting excerpt from Roy Williams book:

llege_hoops/story/1031183.html

I was crushed when he left KU for UNC, but I knew it was going to happen eventually. I am pleased that we were able to find such a spetacular repoacement in Coach Self, who has long since stamped this program as his own. To replace a legend by having even more success than the legend is almost unheard of. Hats off to both coaches for their wonderful work at KU. I was happy to hear that Coach Williams had such a difficult time making the decision and such a respect for Nick Collison. Nick earned it by being one of the hardest working college athletes I have ever seen play the game.

Wow, I was moved by that excerpt.  The part where Dean Smith said to Roy that they may be the only two who know exactly how amazing both schools and programs are and how tough a decision it is gave me goosebumps.

I for one never hated on Roy and really never understood why anyone did.  How can you fault a guy for going home?  How can you hate a guy who was a big reason that we didn't fall out of relevance following the Larry Brown scandal (albeit a ridiculous scenario and totally overblown by the NCAA).  Roy loves Kansas to this day.  Don't believe me?  Just ask him, or just listen to him speak.  I remember watching the pressy in Carolina after he took the job.  He was speaking to a plethora of media and several Tarheel players were present.  He was being pounded with questions about UNC and the talent they had despite the disappointing season and all Roy did was talk about how much he loved KU and how tough it was to leave.  I actually felt bad for the players because unless you are void of intelligence it really appeared like it was a decision that he was unsure of.   Lucky him to have coached 2 of the top 3 programs in college basketball history.

At Roy's HOF induction he spoke to some former KU players and apoligized to Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz and Jaque Vaughn for not delivering to them what they deserved (Final Four appearance).  I thought that showed class and a heartfelt devotion to his kids.

I completely agree.....who knows where we would be right now if Roy hadn't been running the show in Lawrence during the 90's when college basketball's popularity exploded thanks to ESPN, Dick Vitale, etc....I have never had any ill-will toward Coach Williams and was sad to see him go.....this is an easy thing to say now, but I was fired up when Bill Self took over as head coach and wouldn't trade him for anyone. We've been spoiled as Kansas fans, and here's to another amazing year that kicks off tomorrow with some preseason action

I remember the " almost end of the world" when Roy left KU. I was sick. The only way
i could feel that bad was to know we were loseing someone that good.
Roy Williams was a great coach at KU and he is a great coach at UNC.

I allso remember how good i felt when KU beet UNC in the Final 4 in 2008.
Not because Roy lost but because KU and Bill Self won. The dream lives on.
Ralk Chalk ...............................GO..
..........KU

No one will ever know how much hurt Roy Williams went through in leaving Kansas.  That day is still a blur to me, I was a junior at KU and remember just watching it all unfold on the local news stations (Fox 4 and the CBS Channel 5 affiliate).  It is one of a handful of times I have actually cried about sports.  I  was lucky enough to work his last three KU basketball camps.  My dad knew coach Williams through business in Lawrence and played golf with him a handful of times.  One time I was lucky enough to follow along.  Coach Wiliams was such an amazing person, great to talk to, very knowlegable and willing to share with someone who was interested in coaching.  To this day, I think he still loves Kansas as much as he does UNC.  Family took him home more than UNC took him home.

Wow, I was really ticked at Roy for leaving KU. I loved what he did for the program and have tremendous respect for him as coach, mentor, and a man. I finally put closure to Roy's departure after the Jayhawks defeated his Tar heels in 2008, and it really made me happy when Roy showed his support for his former team as they went up against heavily favored Memphis. Coach Williams you will always be a Jayhawk. Good luck to you and your Tar Heels this season!

As a UNC fan I was devastated when Coach Williams turned down the UNC job prior to the Doherty hiring.  I couldn't believe he wasn't coming "home."  When Williams did eventually come home I was even more ecstatic.  Looking at the big picture, the move has turned out best for both programs and coaches.  Coach Williams was always tagged with the can't win the big one at Kansas.  Many years had passed since either program had brought home the trophy.  Now we see UNC with two and Kansas poised to take home a second with their great team they have this year.  Both programs are sitting atop the college basketball world and future success is guaranteed with two of the best coaching minds at the helm.

Very well said Royzboyz.. not much that can be added to that.   I have much respect for the Carolina program and its close relation to ours at Kansas.  With Roy and Self we both will go into nearly every season as a contender and we are guaranteed to see eachother late in March (or early April) from time to time as well.

great article.

I love Roy as a person.

Guy is one heck of a recruiter.  but he is not the best game coach.  when we have superior talent we win championships.  When we have average to good talent we flake.
