Where have the Bears ranked in terms of total yards with Ron Turner as offensive coordinator?

Donald R.
Calumet City, Illinois

The Bears currently rank 20th in the NFL in total yards. In Ron Turner’s previous eight seasons as offensive coordinator, the Chicago offense finished 29th, 15th, 27th and 26th from 2005-08 and 28th, 23rd, 9th and 21st in his first stint from 1993-96.

I'm not one to copy things posted on other sites and create a meaningless thread (bearsfan74oh I am referring to you, please stop!!) but this is more proof of how terrible Ron Turner has been as an OC.  LOOK AT THOSE RANKINGS!!!  Seriously, how does this guy keep his job.  He has ranked in the bottom half of the league 6 times out of 8 and is 20th this year!!!  Unfreaking believeable.  Also he is now quoted on the Bears website as saying we have a "good offensive line".  He says that sacks are not always the offensive lines fault, there are a lot of factors than can result in a sack (which is true but not in the Bears case).  As OC you don't have to rip our offensive line but don't tell them they are good, THEY CAN'T BLOCK ANYONE!!!!  Holy crap I hate this guy, he is more and more clueless everytime I hear him speak.  What have the done so far, not killed Cutler or Forte?  I think they are working on making that happen.  They are the biggest problem on team with multiple issues!!!  I guess in Ron's World a good offense line ranks 29th in the league in rushing.  Please Lovie and JA fire this guy, I can't stand him anymore.   If you don't fire him, PLEASE do not extend his contract beyond this year.

More wood to throw on the fire Ron Turner wagon Can't we just physically throw Ron Turner into the fire and be done with it?

I'm all for it.  The worst part is that he won't actually get fired because his contract is up at the end of the season so he can just walk away.  I want him fired, he doesn't deserve to walk away with any dignity.

Yeah, I'm 100% positive that if the Bears keep the status quo going the rest of the season Angelo will not bring Ron Turner back... Even marginal improvement won't spare him... The Bears Offense would have to go on a major hot streak, climb the rankongs and make a big impact in a playoff run to spare him and we all know that just isn't likely.

He will be replaced because the Bears have been average to bad to horrid most of the Turners time os OC. Jay Cutler was extended and the time would be perfect to install a fresh mind and get Jay on a new scheme / philosiphy early enough that we don't waste most of his time under his fresh, new contract extension just trying to learn new concepts... He needs to get into a new OC's plan and master it so the Offense and the Bears team can move forward.

If Turner is dispatched, who would you guy's like to see as the Bears next OC ??

Go Bears !!

If Turner is dispatched, who would you guy's like to see as the Bears next OC ??Kyle Shanahan!
Not his father, Mike, former head coach of the Broncos.
His son, Kyle Shanahan would be an awesome OC for the Bears.  He is an OC for the Texans right now.  I believe his contract is up at the end of the season, and it is possible he will get a HC job next year.  But I think he needs more seasoning as a OC.  He has done an amazing job with the Texans, and I would love to see what he can do with the Bears.
I would like the Bears to go the Jason Garrett route (Cowboys OC) with Shanahan.  He made a very high paid OC in order to be kept, because he was supposed to be the HC in waiting.  Lovie will probably be gone after his contract is up, and it would be a good time to make Kyle the next HC (that's assuiming he does well as OC).

I would love to see Mike Martz calling plays for the Bears. If you want to open up the offense, he's just the guy to do it.

Bet everyone was waiting to see how long it would take me to jump on this thread. Ive been screaming about Turners lack of coaching abilities for wayy to long. Turner has a bucket full of excuses for every season and it never seems to be his fault or his crappy staffs fault.

The real problem is Lovie and Jerry have done nothing about it, in fact by taking over the D Smith has even less say so on offense so they have left the O completely in Turners hands. Its kind of like giving a monkey a hammer and asking it to build a computer. Jerry Lovie and Ron should all be standing in the unemployment line, but for some reason Ted Phillips hasnt watched a Bears game in the last few seasons.

So I feel burning Turner at the stake is far to good for him, during half time activities Turner should be chained to a pole at midfield and whipped to death a little piece at a time with a salt soaked bullwhip. Smith and Angelo can be burned at the stake on each side of Turner during the show. I feel this is no more brutal than what the fans go through week in and week out with these idiots in charge.

This years free agency period is going to be a big one for Chicago with 2 draft picks gone..I hope the Jerry/Lovie/Ron mess is gone and replaced before FA starts so the new staff has a chance to fix what needs to be fixed. I think whoever takes over the reins for the Bears should have Ron Turners beaten torn hide  used as a floor mat at his office door..so everyone can wipe their feet on him as they come and go. Shoop was only allowed to run the O for 3 seasons, Turner has been ruining it for wayyy longer..hes way easier to hate.

I'm all for Getting Rid Of Ron Turner and his offensive Offense.

I just want to look at it a little more realisticly:

Lovie Smith is signed through 2011 (2 more seasons after this one) he signed for $22 Million He has about 9-10 million left on that deal- and would need to be paid the full amount if the Bears were to fire him.
So If we get rid of Ron Turner at the END of this season- The Bears would be left with 2 seasons with Lovie...
I could see the Bears firing Lovie Smith after next year and paying him off with the the remainder $4-5 million.

So that would mean that an OC would have to come in with just ONE Season of job security... IF the offense stumbled a bit next year learning a new system and not producing thus Lossing Games- Lovie is fired at the end- And the New Head Coach would want to bring in his own system, his own guys to run his systems.

Unless the new OC was given a "under the table" agreement to be considered to be the next Head Coach in waiting if Lovie were to be fired.

I'm just worried about WHO would be willing to do that. I'm sure we could find plenty of NO Experience OC's more then willing to jump on board with Jay Cutler behind center. But Not  a whole lot of proven OC's would be willing to work for a Lame Duck head coach.

PLUS we have the Jerry Angelo factor- signed through 2013- A guy who's supposed expertise is to draft for LOVIE's Cover TWO defense... Is he going to automaticly start scouting and signing and recruiting for a NEW Offensive scheme? Plus WHO would he want to hire with only 2 years left on his deal? What kind of Head Coach would he bring in? Someone with the same Cover Two defense mind set?

I could verywell see the following- Something I'm sure MANY of US DO NOT want to happen but it could very easily go this way...

The WHOLE lame duck Coaching Staff comes back NEXT year- with only ONE year left on contracts- And with yet another non-playoff team EVERYONE gets' CANNED- INCLUDING Angelo- and the Bears go the route of a NEW HEAD COACH PLUS NEW GM- OR a HC with GM duties.
IS that possible?
I wouldn't like it, but you never know- That new FULL staff would have the full compliment of ALL draft picks that year and start over- But now with Jay Cutler still well in the mix. I hope that's not what happens but could very well be the way it goes.
I know it's tough on Fans- because the only way they all go is if the Bears loose games...and if they start pulling out wins the rest of this season or next, then the arguement could be made that Lovie and Company should stay- and I think none of us want that.

Who Knows- It's much more complicated then just Firing Ron Turner.

Go BEARS!!

Looks like the Bears organization is beginning the entire setup of Ron Turner as the fall guy this offseason.  Probably means the rest of the staff will receive a free pass for now.  The official Bears website usually does not single out players or coaches like this, so the seed has been planted.

I don't buy that argument.  Turner is being setup as the fall guy?  The only way in which Turner has been "setup" is in the fact that he was finally given a legitimate #1 NFL QB to run his system.

I don't dispute for a moment that there are issues on the Bears O-line - those issues are obvious to all of us.  BUT Turner's playcalling is awful.  A prime example - the Browns teed off on Jay Cutler last week and Turner didn't even have the sense to call a couple of screens to at least slow down their pass rush????  That's pretty basic stuff.

And to me the Bears abysmal performance in the Red Zone falls primarily on the OC.  The Bears have been able to move the ball fairly well between the 20's but they are horrible in the Red Zone.  We've seen that all season long.  And the thing is this team has some weapons that should be effective in that area - especially the good receiving TEs that the Bears have.

If Turner isn't retained by the Bears it won't be because he was a fall guy.  It will be because he hasn't gotten the job done.  And if the Bears don't have a significant turnaround in the second half of the season he will be the Bears FORMER OC.

I wish this were the case. I think we'd have more brain or computing power.

Turner is a complete sham. He is a joke, resting on laurels from a season he side coached in california, and a season when the entire league was completely depleted defensively due to expansion.

Many Bears fans give Turner credit for the Erik Kramer Bears. But the truth is they didnt even have the best offense in their division that year. Heck, they didn't even have the second best. It may have been better than what we had seen in the past, but as a whole, it was not great. We didn't even make the playoffs...  Turner is a Joke. Plain and simple.

Everything he touches turns to turd.

Thats why we call him Turdner.

And that is my biggest fear with Cutler. He is an franchise Qb. He can do it all. But there is no way he can do it with this jacka$$ calling the shots.

He needs to be fired.

And from all i'm hearing, he will be.

On the one hand, I think the only way Shanahan would come to the Bears is as a HC but he is only 29 years old.  That's 3 years younger than Josh McDaniels and Raheem Morris.  As you mentioned he needs more time as an OC.  But if that is the case he might be better off staying in Houston with a team that has plenty of young, Pro Bowl caliber talent including Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels and QB Matt Schaub

On the other hand, there is the possibility of Kyle Shanahan perhaps joining his father Mike wherever his next coaching job comes up.  There's little doubt that Mike Shanahan will be at the top of the list as a coaching candidate for the 2010 season.   Could that include the opportunity to reunite with Jay Cutler in Chicago??????

Don't get me wrong dabears, I don't disagree with that assessment LOL.  The guy is a worthless steaming pile of cow dung.

However, that doesn't mean Lovie Smith deserves a free pass.  And he won't get a free pass from the Bears organization because there is no free pass in letting go a guy that they still owe $10 million.

Yes, fire Ron Turner and the offensive line will be able to magically block, Cutler will stop throwing red zone picks, Forte will hit the hole running, and the receivers will get open.  Fire Ron Turner and all of that will happen.  The defense will also be able to magically stop someone if Ron Turner is fired.

After another em-BEAR-Assing loss, twice in 3-weeks Angelo should torpedo the whole thing and deep-six Lovie and the whole staff. Start fresh after the season...  This team is going nowhere fast and a rebuilding is in order. If the Bears are lucky enough to fininsh 8-8 it would be a miracle based on the terrible play we Beared witness too in Lovie's 2'nd quarter of the season... 1-3 with two blow-outs and the only win came courtousy of the lowly Clevland Browns !!

Better clean house and rebuild from the ground up, especially with the defense and O-line.

Go Bears !!

The Bears should hire me as an offensive coordinator. I have no experience as a coach, but I really can't be any worse than John Schoop was.  I would do this fairly cheap since I am a huge Bear fan.  Someone let McCasky know.  I am fairly slick and weaselly with the media, I understand we called more run plays but audibled out of them because of 8 men in the box.  I believe in balance regardless of who you have passing or running.
We just thought we were a super slick passing team that didn't need to put any effort into the win, we'd just sling the ball around and not block anyone from the start.  That just doesn't cut it in my book.
Ron Turner sucks, and needs to be fired a couple years ago, today, whenever.
