Bay is virtually the same hitter that J.D. Drew was when the Red Sox gave Drew $70 million over five years three years ago. Look at the comparison:

Although I thought that I had heard that they were intially descussing a 3 year deal, could be wrong. Also it seems that Bay in not as good as a fielder as J.D. was before having everything happen with injuries.
Do Sox fan see Theo trying to ink Bay to a 5 year deal, personally I wouldn't want them too if I were a fan?
i never wanted him in the first place but they have to resign him now or they essentially gave Manny Ramirez away for nothing, that trade was bad enough lets not make it worse by getting rid of the guy that was traded for

I guess the way I look at it is that the market for LF'er right now is very thin. Your choices are to hold onto Bay, Overpay for Holliday, Bring back noodle arm Demon, or get a secondary player that will not come close to your past output. I think you have to re-sign Bay but at what cost.
Rumor is they have offered him 4 years at 60 million
They need to resign him
This in only $1 Million more per if you weight the contract equaly per year. I understand that this is an inital offer, where do you think they draw the line and walk away or do they sign him at all cost?
I could care less if they resign either one of them. I like to think like a general manager, whatever you can do to make your team better...do it. Baseball is'nt even about the regular season anymore, it's about the off-season, I think the Yankee's just proved it...they could'nt win a ring, so they went out and bought one. Thats what the Sox are going to have to do to compete.

Quit being bitter and acting like the Sox have not bought players in the past, ones that helpped them win two championships.

Are you comparing Schilling's payrole to CC's and AJ's ?

Ever here the saying you have to make hay when the sun is shining. This free agent market could best be described as partly sunny. No team is gong to buy any type championship with this market. I can forsee so bad contracts coming with teams over paying for mediocre talent. Theo was one year ahead of the low risk high reward market.
This is a perfect case of where numbers might be similar, but the discrepancy in player's ability is enormous.
Somebody mentioned that Drew can't touch Bay's durability, and that's absolutely true. But in addition to that, Drew doesn't have Bay's power at the plate or passion for the game. J.D. Drew has always struck me as a guy who doesn't really like baseball, but happens to be good enough at it to make a pretty decent living.
All that aside, I hope the Sox resign Bay. He's a decent bad and seems to be a level-headed guy. But it's pretty obvious that the Sox are way more than Jason Bay away from seriously competing for a WS.

Were there a couple guys by the name of Papi and Manram that helped you win a couple rings, I can't remember?
