I don't know what the trade will be, but I have a feeling Luongo will be a Leaf next year whether we want it or not.

Ima,

After trading Cody Hodgson, there is NO way the Canucks get rid of Kesler.  Also, there is no way they are going to take all the Leafs scrap (and a first round pick) for just Luongo.  I would think that you would have to send a top forward, a major prospect and the first round pick at a minimum (and probably Schenn).  If i were to guess at an appropriate package, I would assume Kulemin, Schenn, Colborne and the first round pick.  At that price they might be better served to go after some one like Bernier.  It may seem steep, but teams like the Canucks, Kings and Predators hold all the cards in situations like this.

Congrats, Ima!!

I have two boys of my own and couldn't be happier.  Both are a little young for hockey, but never to early for brainwashing....*wink

The only way that the Canucks trade luongo's contract is to take bad deals back, except alot shorter than lous 10 years, anyways, luongo has a no-trade clause until 2015.

I don't think that is necessarily true.  This isn't some washed up star with an unmovable contract....this is a franchise goalie with a lot of good years left in him (and a large contract).

luongo has a no-trade clause until 2015....
.....that can be waived for the right team.

He's a good goalie with a crazy contract, that's hard to move, you have to make it worthwhile for the other team taking him, like taking on a komisarek and armstrong, relieve another  team of some guys that they're stuck with.

There are some interesting goalie scenarios coming up for the Kings, Predators, and Canucks where they have too much goalie talent.  This is coupled with teams like the Oilers, Devils, Lightning, Blue Jackets, Leafs and other that are desperate for a goaltender.  Schneider and Lindback are RFA's this year (with Lack and Smith, respectively, coming up) and Bernier is a RFA next year, which should create a lot of interesting moves.  If no one is willing to trade the high price for the afore mentioned goalies then they have to know that the compensation last year for an offer sheet of 5 million was a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  I can't imagine there isn't a desperate team out there not thinking about putting in an offer sheet this year or next if the asking price is too high.  If I am Burke and the Leafs, I am not sure that I would want to, but with enough pressure he may think about swallowing his pride and sending out the offer sheet.....which he should have done with Phil Kessel in the first place.

Mostly food for thought from a man watching playoff hockey and drinking gin.

ok...agreed, but I wouldn't think for a second that ALL scrap is going to get a deal like that done.  It can't be all "relief" (and a first round pick) for calibre like Luongo

personally don't think he's gonna get moved, but if he does, i dont' know why, but i have a feeling it will be to washington.

vokoun comes off the books, and they aren't gonna re-sign him.  they have a team that is built to compete now so i doubt they're gonna put all their hopes in neuvirth or holtby (if they dont' have to).  my gut tells me it's washington.

i could see a trade like

1st and semin's rights

for

luongo

or something like that.

i can't see them trading him within the western conference.

new jersey would be my other pick, with brodeur and hedberg both older than the game of hockey itself.

Yea, good points. I just hope we don't give away anything good to land Luongo. There are other goalies I'd rather get, just not sure I'd want to give away our good players for them. Goalies don't always look so great when there are no good players in front of them.

Enroth, Bernier, or Lindback would be good ones to go after as well, but at what price?

Semin would be dangerous in Vancouver. I could see Jersey taking on Luongo too with Marty on the way out.

Luongo to Toronto makes sense, but at what cost? I really cant get a feel at all as to what the Canucks expect in return for Luongo but the Leafs need to keep their picks and continue building w/ the kids. Trade away current assets to get it done but I would have to assume that Vancouver does not want over priced vets ala Komi.

how are the leafs gonna afford luongo.  there is NO CHANCE that the Canucks are gonna take on plugs like komisarek or connolly, unless so REAL NICE assets go back the other way (ie. 1st rd pick, gardiner, etc.)

its' a nice thought, but luongo to toronto doesn't make sense.......although, stupid moves that don't make sense, and that cost the leafs A TON, are burkes bread and butter, so you never know.  Wink

Luongo will end up in florida, burke's policies toward long term deals, burke probably like TT better, and add to the fact that luongo's wife is from florida, looks like a no-brainer.

I don't think Burke trades for Lou unless Gillis is foolish enough to take on at least two of the bad contracts.    Gillis is going to want that number 1 pick too, and rightfully so.

Unless Gillis only has to take Lombardi and maybe some bad prospect paper, I don't think Gillis makes the trade even if the number 1 is involved.

I think Louongo gets Toronto in the postseason as long as Burke gets some help for the blueline.   In two or three years though, I think they'll be close to where they were before the trade.

Toronto can't afford to give up good young players or high picks right now, there are too many organizational holes.

Thanks Matty, I'm pumped!

If Vancouver wants to part ways with Luongo, they can't really be picky on what they get back. Schneider won't play backup forever so they'll end up losing him if they don't make a move. Also with the Burke/Nonis/Vancouver ties I think a deal could be made that wouldn't hurt the Leafs too bad. I doubt it will cost us this year's 1st rounder, but maybe next year's. Besides, we need this year's 1st to land us Getzlaf lol. Then again, we could wait a year to sign both Getzlaf and Perry at the same time...dreams...lol.
