UA Expansion & Petrino's 7-Yr Contract Extension

July 12, 2011 7:06 pm

Good post. Thank you for the update. I haven't heard anything else about closing in the north endzone in DRS. Does anyone know if that is still on the agenda, or will I have to wait and see in the fall?

On the drawing board, but 4-5 years out - after completion of Football Operations Center.  For details on the north endzone, check out a couple Nov 2010 posts at this link -

UA Expansion & Petrino's 7-Yr Contract Extension

Miles new deal almost equals Petrino's

New salary information that just came out of Les Miles 'revised' contract extension reveals some interesting facts relative to Bobby Petrino's recent contract revision -

Base Salary:  LSU's governing board publicly said this on the matter > "Miles' contract change will keep his nearly $3.8 million annual base pay".  Last December, a source I quoted said it was $3.9 million, which put him $50,000 ahead of Petrino (or) 2nd highest in the SEC.  This correction means that CBP actually ranks 2nd at $3.85 million.

Termination Compensation:  As I understand it, if Petrino were to leave, or if UA were to terminate, the initiating party pays the other $18 million over the first two years - then a declining amount over the course of the contract.  While the new Miles agreement does not mention a like reciprocal arrangement, it does provide that an LSU termination of Miles would now cost the school $18.7 million, if during the first year (and also declining over time).  Clearly, this provision was motivated by the Arkansas-Petrino deal.

I will say this - it is possible that the increased bonuses mentioned in the three-year contract just might be an overall, more lucrative deal than Petrino's.

UA Expansion & Petrino's 7-Yr Contract Extension

September 14, 2011 6:36 am

I heard from a friend today that Bobby Petrino has donated $250,000.00 to Arkansas Childrens Hospital, and is planning on having an annual charity golf tournament to go to the ACH. Has anyone else heard anything about this?
If true, it shows how much class he has.I'm proud he's at Arkansas.

I saw this article on it:

Petrinos Donate $250,000 To Children's Hospital :

Arkansas Razorbacks Football Coach Bobby Petrino and his wife Becky said Friday that they are giving the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock $250,000 for construction of the hospital's South Wing. ...

He is obviously starting to set down long term roots. The humanitarian aspect is highly commendable, and the tangential UA coaching aspect is nice as well.

Paul Petrino's Salary
Robbie Neiswanger
December 10, 2011

Offensive coordinator Paul Petrino will earn $475,000 annually in his new position with the Razorbacks.

Petrino’s contract information was obtained through a Freedom of Information request Friday afternoon.  He will earn $50,000 more than former Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee, who was named Alabama-Birmingham’s head coach earlier this week.

Most of Petrino’s salary ($425,000) at Arkansas will come from “public and private funds,” according to the contract.  But he also will earn an additional $50,000 from the Razorback Foundation for speaking engagements.

Petrino’s letter of agreement also provides him with one automobile, a family membership to Paradise Valley Athletic Club, moving expenses and three months of temporary housing.  Petrino will receive four tickets to home football games and two tickets all other Arkansas sporting events as part of his agreement.

Petrino reportedly earned $525,000 with the Illini.

Exactly one year ago right here on page 1, I posted another Neiswanger link, which basically revealed the assistant coaching salaries that are in place at this time -
http://arkansasnews.com/2010/12/22/
arkansas-recommends-raises-for-assi
stants/

... showing Garrick's salary as $336,000.

But wait...

His newer article (posted above) states Paul is being paid $425,000 - or "$50,000 more than former Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee".

But that doesn't add up, since the math says it's actually $89,000 more.  Makes me wonder about this extra 39 grand that doesn't compute.

This is not to say I disagree with Paul's salary - which is still considerably less than the $525,000 he made at Illinois.

Paul Hayne's Salary
Robbie Neiswanger
December 15, 2011

Arkansas defensive coordinator Paul Haynes will earn $475,000 annually with the Razorbacks.

Haynes’ contract information was obtained through a Freedom of Information request Wednesday. His annual salary is equal to new offensive coordinator Paul Petrino. Both will earn $50,000 more than Arkansas’ highest paid assistant in 2010 (Garrick McGee).

Most of Haynes’ salary ($425,000) at Arkansas will come from “public and private funds,” according to the contract. He also will earn an additional $50,000 from the Razorback Foundation for speaking engagements.

Like Petrino, Haynes’ Arkansas letter of agreement also provides him with one automobile, a family membership to Paradise Valley Athletic Golf Club or the Fayetteville Athletic Club, moving expenses and three months of temporary housing. Haynes will receive four tickets to home football games and two tickets all other Arkansas sporting events as part of his agreement.

A USA Today database compiled in Dec. 2010 indicated Haynes earned $235,000 in base salary at Ohio State with a chance to make as much as $39,167 more in bonuses.

You might have noticed, hiring Haynes made Neiswanger's job easier, as both new coordinators - and his two articles - are practically cookie-cutters of each other... meaning the terms of both Paul's are virtually the same.  Cool.

Razorback Football Coaches Well-Paid @ No. 7

Love the fact the UA administration is so dedicated to being successful in athletics.
USA Today released its annual study of salaries in college football for 2011, which includes head coaches and assistant coaches.  Bobby Petrino and staff (before recent changes) rank as the 7th highest paid in the land.  One can study the breakdown of most all of the D-1 staffs at the ranking link below, but here is where we stand in a nutshell.  (Also, some additional SEC summaries on the newspaper's study may be seen in this Chris Low article.)
  • No surprise that ten of the 12 SEC schools are among the Top 25 best paid coaching staffs.
  • Arkansas' total staff salary is 5th largest in SEC behind Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Florida.
  • Petrino's salary is 3rd largest among HCs in the SEC behind Saban and Miles.
  • It is conceivable the Hogs' staff salary might rise to 4th in the SEC with the new hirees for 2012.

USA Today Top 25 Staffs
  1. Texas               $8,810,300
  2. Alabama          $8,519,683

Perhaps somebody else might take the USA Today data and break down where Arkansas' OC and DC salaries might rank in the nation/SEC for 2012?

2012 Football Coaching Payroll

An 11-win season and replacing four assistants was bound to increase the payroll - justifyably.  And, with the possible exception of losing John L., I can't help thinking Arkansas just "stepped it up" on both sides of the ball with these four new hires - making it well worth the increase.

In all, the Razorbacks’ nine full-time assistant coaches will now make a combined $2.603 million, annually, up from $2.304 million last season.  Using the USA Today figures in the post above, this $299,000 (~13%) increase moves Arkansas' football annual coaching payroll to $6,275,000.

New Salary Breakdown of Arkansas' Assistant Football Coaches*
$475,000    Paul Petrino, offensive coordinator      (Garrick McGee made $336,000)
$475,000 Paul Haynes, defensive coordinator       (Willy Robinson made $375,000)
$275,000 Taver Johnson, linebackers coach         (Reggie Johnson made $183,600)
$266,420 Chris Klenakis, offensive line coach
$257,000 Steve Caldwell, special teams coordinator/defensive ends coach
$235,000 Bobby Allen, defensive backs coach
$214,800 Kris Cinkovich, wide Receivers coach
$205,000 Tim Horton, running backs coach
$200,000 Kevin Peoples, defensive tackles coach >>

More on Peoples
CBP snagged the 9-year defensive line coach from Arkansas State in mid-2010 for an eventual coaching roll when it came open.  During the interim he has worked in the football department's front office.  He is also a Carroll College product.  (Since September 2010 his wife Rebecca has served as UALR Director of Basketball Operations after an 8-year stint as assistant women's basketball coach at Arkansas State.)
