Are offensive linemen holding more??

Pass interference calls aren't the only penalties on the rise. Offensive holding calls are up significantly on a weekly basis over the past six years. Pass attempts and sacks are on the rise, and pressure calls by the defense have become a mainstay. Consequently, offensive linemen can't keep their hands to themselves.

I asked two offensive line coaches about the steady increase in holding calls, and I got two interesting answers. The first blamed it on the increased use of five-man protection schemes when the linemen don't get any help from a back or tight end. Many quarterbacks prefer five receivers out in patterns and feel they can control a blitzer better with a receiver than a blocker. The second said it was due to too many backup offensive linemen having to play due to injuries and not being able to handle the pass rushers. That appeared to be the case last week for the Chargers when left tackle Marcus McNeill got hurt injury andBrandyn Dombrowski replaced him. Kamerion Wimbley went on to record four sacks of Philip Rivers.

Where do you get your stats...?

And how do you suggest the Raiders address the "problem"? Are one of those guys gonna walk through our door, and if they do is everything magically better?

NBC Sports for the stats.

I think Veldheer would be a good guard and probably wouldn't have as much problems with holding there.

Bruce Campbell is better suited at tackle.

This thread is a pathetic joke. Bleeder played very well, your boy Bruce didn't even see the field. I wonder why that was. Get the hell out of here.

Thats your problem... You use stats to make your argument against Veldheer.. Fine most of who watch the games disagree with your accessment...

But then you say Bruce Campbell would be a better option? Based on what Combine numbers and measurments alone? Arm Length?  I am sure Mario Henderson's  measurables probably looked pretty sexy to you before you saw him play.....

Carson Palmer and Eli Manning are not similar at all. Manning scores more touchdowns and is more mobile. Manning wins more games than he loses.
Right. Palmer, 107 G, 167 TD. Manning, 121 G, 185 TD.

Averges: Palmer, 1.56 TD per game. Manning, 1.52 TD per game. BS called.

Mobility: Palmer, 107 G, 336 Yds, 6 TD. Manning, 121 G, 365 Yds, 4 TD.
Averages: Palmer - 3.14 yds per game. Manning - 3.02 YPG. BS Called again.

And Manning has had better teams around him.

So to summarize. Palmer scores more TD. Palmer is more mobile. Palmer also scores more TD on the ground. And it's Palmer's fault he played for the most disfunctional team in the league.

Give me an effing break. Maybe if Palmer was more willing to join a gang or constantly keep weights on his arms to lengthen them....

You're not looking at the big picture about mobility and interceptions.

Carson Palmer 116 INTs in 107 games, 1.08 INT/game
Eli Manning 129 INTs in 121 games, 1.06 INT/game

Carson Palmer sacked 177 times in 107 games, 1.65 per game.
Eli Manning sacked 194 times in 121 games, 1.60 per game.

Hey though, Eli Manning must be the more accurate passer...
Palmer 62.7% for his career, Eli 58.4 (I gotta be fair, Eli has been more accurate the past 4 years)

Eli completes less because he is more of a big play passer...
Palmer 7.2 yards per attempt, Manning 7.0 (again fairness, Eli has a higher yds/att the past 4 years).

Again in fairness, can't argue the win-loss, except to hope that this is the match of scheme/veteran that will benefit player/team.
Also for fairness, Eli's offenses have typically been higher scoring than Palmer's.

But it still goes back to TEAM GAME.......

Like someone said earlier in the thread, is Trent Dilfer better than Dan Marino?

Like Rodmoney is still on his soapbox that it is Carson Palmers fault that the Raiders didnt make the playoffs... "He didnt do enough to get the win"....... When anyone with half an unbiased brain can see the defense tanked games in which the offense did plenty enough to win...

He sites the Miami game and the Green Bay game.... News flash, those losses were on EVERYONE, from Hue to the equiptment manager...

I am not here saying Carson Palmer is the best QB ever, or even the best in the league.... But I am saying he is sure as hell better than Jason Campbell, Terrell Pryor and the many hacks we have had behind center for the last 9 years.... And most of all despite a dead horse being beaten, he is not "AWFUL".....

And as far as Jared Veldheer goes, I guess we will see if the new Front office/coaching staff agrees with your accessments of him or not by what happens..

I did do you a favor though, to help Veldheer develop into a better overal player, I emailed him this link and told to keep it on spin 24-7 till next season...

Joe Thomas- 5 seasons 6 holding calls 20 false starts 22.5 sacks allowed...

Joe Staley- 5 seasons 6 holding calls 12 false starts 28.5 sacks allowed..

Michael Roos 7 seasons 3 holding calls 34 false starts 31.5 sacks allowed.

Jason Peters 8 seasons 9 holding calls 30 false starts 31.5 sacks allowed.

Jeff Otah 3 seasons 2 holding calls 10 false starts 10 sacks allowed

Marcus McNeill 6 seasons 3 holding calls 21 false starts 26.75 sacks allowed

Bryant McKinnie 10 seasons 14 holding calls 22 false starts 73 sacks allowed

Jake Long 4 seasons 8 holding calls 12 false starts 19 sacks allowed

Matt Light 11 seasons 14 holding calls 26 false starts 69.25 sacks allowed

D'Brickashaw Ferguson 6 seasons 9 holding calls 16 false starts 47.25 sacks allowed

Chad Clifton 12 years 17 holding calls 52 false starts 44 sacks allowed..

Jared Veldheer 2 seasons 12 holding calls 10 false starts 11.5 sacks allowed

Not all those guys on your list are LT's ....... I still contend that if we have someone better plug them in....

Maybe you are high on Bruce Campbell because he has 0 penalties, because it is all about stats right?

I will say this...  Jared Veldheer did have a large number of holding penalties, however the 4 sacks given up last season is better than a lot of them.

Thanks for the site 89, hadn't ever looked at that one by the way.

I'd rather have a holding penalty than a sack cuz it is protecting the QB and gives you a down back, but that could just be me - the sack usually isn't 10 yards back so that's a toss up...

I'm not the president of the Jared Veldheer fan club either if anyone remembers my comments from last offseason (something along the lines of had some good moments, looked good enough to come into season as starter, but warned caution as he was far from perfect and many had said similar things about Mario Henderson).

However, stats aside...  He passed the eyeball test IMO.  He gave some reason for optimism his rookie year and built on it.  Sure he still had a misstep or two (Bears game) but he got better (and who forgets the Vikings game)...  Even if last year was as good as he can be I'll take that, he was so far away from being the weak link on the line, the offense, the team...  No, he was not elite - but you aren't always going to have elite at every position.

Interesting to see how well Carson Palmer stacks up against the best quarterbacks in the game.

The rest is all irrational, hate filled, cherry picked BS that serves one, and only one, purpose....to remind us that 89 is an unreasonable idiot. That is all.

You guys are living in the past comparing their entire careers. I'm talking about right now. Eli is currently a far better QB. Carson Palmer has been getting worse for years now.

In Palmer's most recent season he threw more interceptions than touchdowns and since 2007 Carson Palmer has steadily been getting worse. Here are his rankings in the NFL for QB Rating since then.

2007 - 14
2008 - only played 4 games
2009 - 16
2010 - 19
2011 - 19
