Anything on the 2012 Class Yet?

July 17, 2011 10:33 am

Here are a few tidbits I have read on different sites about some of our targets.   First off I read that Texas A&M was close to finalizing the hiring of J-Mychal Reese's father which could make it very difficult to lure the highly talented guard anywhere but College Station.   Perry Ellis continues to draw crowds at his games.  Kentucky is very involved and now applying the full court press is Duke.    Ellis mentioned to a reporter that he was something of a Duke fan and he has had a good relationship with Jeff Capel for sometime now.   Not a whole lot of new information on Kaleb Tarcewski.   He visited UNC and Arizona and is reportedly set to decide in August.  Nino Jackson seems likely to take his time and visits before narrowing it down a school.  There are other targets as well but I haven't heard much real "new" news on them.   The rumor mill will get winding again over the next month or two.

Story today is that Reese's father turned down the A&M job which is a great sign for Kansas.   J-Mychal has been a bit of a KU lean for awhile and now he won't have to choose between being a Jayhawk and playing for his dad at a BCS program.     We are in on a ton of talent like Muhammed, McGary, Coleman and others and at this point I think landing at least 4 high end talents is a very good possibility.   In fact I like the chances of Reese, Ellis, Tarcewski and Jackson all ending up in Lawrence but still lots of time until the entire class is revealed.

Reese, Ellis, Tarcewski and Jackson are the exact four I am hoping to see end up as Jayhawks next year. I think Danny Manning and Hudy could turn Tarcewski into a Top 5 NBA Draft pick.

Shoe, what can you tell me about our chances on Archie Goodwin and Tony Parker? Both have Kansas on their list and both were listed as top performers at this years Peach Jam: http://memphisroar.com/2011/07/perf

Reading their descrption of Parker, he sounds like someone I'd love to see play at Kansas.

Anything on the 2012 Class Yet?

July 26, 2011 7:13 pm

First off the twitter world is a buzz with Kaleb Tarcewski news and speculation.   It appears as if his recruitment is coming to an end and an announcement is possible as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week.   With UNC, Arizona and Kentucky all in the mix the hub bub is all positive for Kansas.   He recently spoke about the teams involved and certainly was glowing about KU and mentioned that Lawrence felt like home.. while not a definite that statement is always a good sign.     If Kaleb does choose KU it won't be a total surprise by any stretch but it sure will be a welcomed event.  He is a legit 7 footer and a load in the paint.

As for Goodwin and Parker... love both of their games.   With Parker we sorta came out of nowhere to become a serious player in his recruitment.   With Archie it seems Kansas is headed the opposite direction so I am not overly optimistic about him and cautiously optimistic about Parker just because typically late bloomers don't get the worm.

Anything on the 2012 Class Yet?

News has it that Tarczewski will announce in 24 to 48 hours.  My gut says Kansas.  Ol' Roy has really expanded his recruitment of 2012 post players which is indicitive of Roy knowing something we fans don't.  Speculation had it that Kaleb wanted to commit to UNC during his visit, but his parents talked him out of it because their relationship with Self.  I'm sure the facilites at UNC would make any 17 year olds jaw drop, but KU is closer to home and Self has been along for the whole Tarczewski ride since his freshmen year.

Eh, Kansas is "closer to home" than Carolina? Isn't he from New Hampshire? I am pretty sure that the "speculation that he wanted to commit to UNC" was probably just on the UNC message boards. I have heard no such speculation on any actual news or recruiting sites. It has long been reported that it was down to Arizona or Kansas.

This appears to have been a premature statement by rivals.   The announcement could come next week though but if not some time in August seems to be pretty certain.

Speculation had it that Kaleb wanted to commit to UNC during his visit, but his parents talked him out of it because their relationship with Self.

This was a rumor started by a fictitious twitterer.   A guy admitted that he made up a profile and started making erroneous recruiting comments to see just how many people would buy in.  To his astonishment, a lot did.  In fact he was even retweeted by the likes of Jay Bilas, Jeff Goodman and others.   But for the record there is absolutely no truth to that rumor.   In fact both UNC and UK are pretty much out of it and it is down to KU and UA.

I'm sure the facilites at UNC would make any 17 year olds jaw drop

I'm sure it is pretty awesome to peruse the basketball part of UNC's campus but the kid has been to the mecca (Lawrence, KS) of basketball on four different occasions I believe.

I wasn't tryng to argue about Tarczewski coming to UNC, but only pointing out different stories that have been published in our local media.  My geography was off when I said KU is closer to home.  Either way all 3 of his choices are far away from his home.  I guess you could make a point about any of the national powers when it come to facilities.  Like I said in the earlier post, I do feel that he will commit to KU.

Another case in point would be that Tarczewski may be "over recruited" at a UNC or UK.  And the way Miller is recruiting at Zona the same there as well.  What I mean by that, is that those 3 schools most likely would bring equally or more talented post players during his time.

You had me going until that statement.   You seemed pretty reasonable and humble then made an embarrassingly unrealistic comment.   Kaleb Tarcewski is an elite talent ranked as high as #5 depending on the site.   You don't recruit over a player like that regardless of the program or the coach.

but only pointing out different stories that have been published in our local media

No problem and it wasn't just the local Carolina media reporting that.   But I just wanted to point out that it was completely erroneous and the Carolina media as well as many other outlets (including media covering Kansas) were on the butt end of a pretty humorous practical joke.

Anything on the 2012 Class Yet?

August 5, 2011 8:20 pm

J-Mychal Reese committed to Texas A&M today, coincidentally the same school his father was rumored to have accepted a job to and then pulled back.   Most of the talk recently is that Kansas had cooled on him and perhaps even pulled the offer.   The focus as far as guards for the 2012 class is still Nino Jackson, Dillon Graham, LJ Rose and possibly most notablly Marcus Smart.   Smart is an elite guard with enough size to even play some wing but like Reese he is a Texas product and could be difficult to lure away from the Lone Star state.   This guy has been a beast in absolutely shredding the summer AAU circuit.

The status of Kaleb Tarcewski's recruitment remains pretty much the same.   Zagsblog just ran a report that UK has gotten more into the mix and here is a quote from Kaleb about his timetable....

I’m going to try to make my decision if not before school starts, maybe a week or two into school,” he said.

Wherever he goes, he wants “to feel at home, feel comfortable with the players and the staff, just know that I can get better wherever I go.”

He said recently that Kansas felt like home and he has always stressed how he feels our staff can make him better so at this point I feel very good about this for us.

Man I really liked reese his game was just smooth i liked it and he had such a nice lefty stroke thats too bad now we got to play him twice a year when he gets to college. But Marcus  Smart is and absolute beast just a man child. He rebounds he does it all. Check out the video on youtube of his putback dunk its ridiculous. But I havent looked at Lj rose or Dillon Graham never evan heard of them. Thanks Shoe I will go check them out to see whats up with them.

For Kaleb I really want him he is a 7ft and those dont come around often except Withey and right now we all know about that. So this kid does actually seem physical so it will be a great get to get Kaleb.

Whether you're the #5 ranked recruit or not doesn't really matter.  I see Tarczewski taking a year or two to adjust to the college game.  Some kids want to come in and be the focal point from day one.  At UNC he would be one of several McDonalds AA's on the roster as he would at several other schools.

Next year means no Henson, no Barnes and no Zeller.    There would be plenty of playing time at UNC for Kaleb Tarcewski just as there will be at Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, UCLA, Michigan St or any other program in the country.

Tarczewski still plans on announcing before his school starts, which should be the first week of September. Scuttlebutt is that its between KU and Zona with KU having a slight edge though he still lists UNC, its a two dog race from what everyone has heard.

Perry Ellis' mom told TheShiver's Matt Scott that Perry would be deciding before his high school basketball season start, so sometime around Late Night I think. His final four are KU, KState, Wichita State and Kentucky.

From what I understand the other high-priority target for Bill Self and company is Marcus Smart. This would be an awesome get but its also going to be tough to get him out of the state of Texas. A&M, UT, Tech and Baylor are all recruiting him as well.

Tony Parker is like a .0001% chance of coming to Kansas, forget about him.

Archie Goodwin wants to visit KU, but there is no date set. Matt at TheShiver thinks if he does visit his recruitment could get interesting for Kansas but we are right now a longshot.
There are a ton of tidbits about the 2012 and 2013 recruits Kansas is targeting here
