Gregg Doyel is a writer that don't know sh-- about boxing. have you ever noticed that the boxing media is majority white people hating that could never compete at the sport, period. I know a lynch mob when I see one. Protect yourself at all times. 42-0, keep your excuses.

Then you are saying there should be no mike vick fans, or fans of any player accused or convicted of a heinous act. These players committed moral acts non sports related yet they are praised. That's a "you" thing and worse yet a media thing

May weather and orteze were promting a rematch more then anything else. The fault lies with hob turning the sport into a reality show. Creating a character like may weather who is nothing more then boxings version of "the situation".

Boxing is dead! I used to watch it but this is the last straw. Mayweather got into some trouble and hit a man with a cheap shot to win. Pacquiao hold up the sport for as long as you can cause Mayweather ain't going to do it. In the meantime I will watch real sports other than boxing.

For once, I agree with Doyel. Incredible cheap shot by Mayweather and a chickensh-t way to win. For someone who claims to be the GOAT, it was shameful. And then to get into it with an old man - Mayweather is a straight punk. If he ever gets the stones to fight Pacquiao, he'll get whipped.

I think is one of those few times when I totally agree with Doyel. @ Pimp_C, please don't try and make this about race. It's not about race its about sportsmanship. It's about how to behave as a thinking caring human being. It's what we teach our children when we get them involved in sports. It's about always remembering that the game, whatever the game is, is bigger then you and your job as an athlete is to protect the integrity of the game. Race is the last thing I thought about when I watched that fight Saturday night, what I thought about was how a sport I love to watch continues its decline because of those participants who have lost respect for the sport itself. That's what this is about!

Mdterpfan24 - The point is on the ship out on the water - you are standing at the dock. Doyle's point is that Mayweather did something ugly, borderline legal (for the sport). He calls it dirty - and Mayweather is gloating about it. He finds it detestable - and attacks it. I happen to agree with his stance. Vick, on the other hand (in your example) is NEVER Praised for his Dogfighting issues. Ever. No one ever tried to defend him for his despicable acts. They praise him for his play on the field, where Vick is many things but not typically dirty. No one defended him flipping off fans either..... Add to that that Vick broke the law, did his time in prison, and it changes the entire landscape. A court of his peers determined his fate and he paid it. he has been a changed man since that time.... Mayweather on the other hand.... that was legal, yes, but not in the spirit of sportsmanship. I personally believe sportsmanship should be in sports (hence the term) but I have had long debates with many who just want to "win at all costs". To each their own.... Mayweather fans shouldn't be disappearing by droves - I don't believe that. But fandom should be tempered with the situation - and that is universal. Even Vick lost a lot of fans due to his behavior - why SHOULDN'T Mayweather? Doyles comparison to McSorley is accurate - what McSorley did was borderline - legal, but a game infraction - and as a result almost killed a man. Very similar situations....

Pimp, I've had four amateur fights. Just four, but still, four more than you. And I'm 4-0 with 3 KO. I spar weekly with pros. That's a fact.

Pimp_C... really? Why the race card gets played so quickly and often is beyond me. If i was of a minority race, i would do everything i could to NOT play that card. (correct... hard working, middle aged, white guy here....) In a situation like this, you only eliminate any shred of credibility that you might have had... The fight: Total sucker punch. Totally legal. While I agree that the win is cheap, if i am in the ring with a punk like MWeather, i am going to be 'on guard' at all times. Ortiz knew MWeather was a chump when he got in to the ring. no surprises. What a shame... Boxing is always brutal but not always 'cheap'

Gregg, decent read. I hate to admit it, but i am actually starting to enjoy reading your articles. Certainly NOT because you are a good sports writer (I think that we all agree that you aren't) but i like the angles and approaches.

Why do these writers constantly try to inject some kind of morality or sportsmanship in fighting sports? be it boxing, MMA, etc., the nature of the sport is to do as much violence to the other guy as possible, regardless. That aim of course is obviously incompatible with acting like a gentleman, as a gentleman wouldn't engage in such activities in the first place. I have nothing against boxing, in fact I love, it, but I don't try to turn it into some kind of chivalry tournament. He hit the dude when it was legal to do so. What's the problem. maybe we should be talking about who stupid the other guy was for dropping his guard even the though the ref was clearly signalling them to fight.

Doyel, why so melodramatic? You are more worked up than my twelve year old at the Taylor Swift concert last night. Take some deep breaths, stop giving in to sensationalism, and write like a professional. Now, I was amazed as you that the moron looked to the official for help, especially since the ref had already indicated to resume fighting BEFORE the "mini-hug". They touched gloves, which has always signaled the resume of fighting, always (anyone with any experience with boxing knows this), and for some reason head butt boy didn't want to fight. That was obviously a mistake as everyone knew the fight was back on. Now I know many new to boxing thing Mayweather did something cheap (you called him a coward in fact - abuse hyperbole much? Mayweather was as shocked as everyone else that Ortiz wouldn't fight. It certainly appears to be an honest mistake on Mayweather's part, since of course Ortiz should have been ready. I think the problem is Mayweather taking the hard line in the post-fight interview, acting as if there was nothing to talk about. I think its more about Mayweather not wanting to admit he made a mistake as it may detract from his victory, and in seeing how the press has traditionally treated him, that makes sense. But the bigger issue are these armchair journalists second-guessing the officials, boxing tradition, and common sense so that they can write sensational pieces like this. The insecure love to throw around words like "coward", "dirty fighter", and "no shame" (pot, meet kettle lol), especially from the distant safety of a keyboard. Let's just say that Doyel is no Larry Merchant.

When you don't have leg to stand on, play the race card. Everybody must be racist if they disagree, yeah? You're about as thin-skinned as Floyd Jr., and it completely robs you of your cred.

Maybe if you were to unload that huge chip on your shoulder Pimp you could make an intelligent argument about the fight. Until then, I don't see it happening. Remember the NY Giants-Rams game on Monday night when two Giants defensive players faked injury because they couldn't keep up with the Rams no-huddle offense? This is the same as that, imo-yes, it's "legal" but it's cheap and makes a mockery of the sport.

I GUARANTEE you if someone did that to to big baby Floyd he'd be crying foul, same as he is now. Because in Floyd's world it is ALL about Floyd getting over. I have lost all respect for him. And please don't give me your tired "you don't know shit**** about boxing" argument, because it's some weak b.s.

I completely understand where Doyel is coming from in this article, good read, and well written but let's play a little game of perspective. Ortiz brutally headbutted Mayweather, in a rough and illegal manner. Not that it makes Mayweather's victory 'right'. Turnabout is certainly fair play, and for being a dirty boxer Ortiz got a dirty KO delivered in two good shots to the face.

I think what's missing is the loyalty of a fan. A fan can admonish or not condone an action by his/her favorite team or player, but to say there's something wrong with the fan, because he/she doesn't stop liking the team or player is a bit much and feels like Doyel is forcing his way of thinking upon people. Just my opinion.

i think mayweathergetting some heat for this is fine but why are the ref and ortiz not getting the same, joe cortez completely blew it and ortiz acting like it was a make out session and not a boxing match, plus hes the one who made it dirty in the first place, even people who dont know boxing understand "protect yourself at all times" why did victor ortiz not get the memo? If he is that unaware of what goes on in a boxing ring perhaps he should retire before some real harm comes to him

Mr. Doyle, what's wrong with you? When the ref says let's go and brings the fighters together that's the time to fight, not to stand there apologizing for the actual dirty and illegal act that you pulled. Ortiz had already kissed, shook hands and said I'm sorry before the match was resumed. Once the match resumed he went for another hug, Floyd retuned the gesture and Ortiz just kept on with his apology while Floyd rightly resumed the fight. I'm not going to hate on Floyd because Ortiz felt guilty about his heinous act. Saying sorry doesn't erase the real despicable action of the night. Get on your high horse when Floyd actually does something illegal in the ring. Until then stop wasting your ink.
