5 star Wideout on his Michigan Recruitment

"(My coach and I) had a couple of conversations about Michigan," said Diggs. "It would be a great place to turn me into a better person. As of right now I feel like I'm not yet Michigan material, but I've got a lot of potential to be Michigan material. It would be a good fit for me."

Note to Stefon "Your are already MICHIGAN material with statements like that. I hope we land this kid, sounds like a great kid. He has feet that would make a sewing machine jealous. He would be the highest rated kid in our class!

It would be amazing to get a true playmaker in this class. This kid is supposed to be electrifying with the ball in his hands. We don't currently have any skill player on our team (with the exception of Denard), that we can say this about.

I know the argument that there are some very good 2 and 3 star players (like Mike Hart), but if you look at the quality of the 5 star talent over the last 5 years, it can be a fast way to improve our offense.

Still not convinced Michigan is a major factor for Stefon Diggs? More from his mentor...

On the schools that will pose the biggest challenge to Michigan…

“I would say Florida, Auburn, Cal, and Virginia. There something in common for all of them. All of those schools I named (are places where he knows somebody. He wants to be with somebody he knows. I think Michigan could be a fit for him because I’ve been up there a few times this year and I sit back and observe. The structure is there, the people are there… you’ve got NFL guys there. Then the possibility of him rooming with Blake and all that good stuff like that… there are so many plusses to it. “

On Blake Countess’ effect on Diggs’ decision…

“His buddy (i.e. Countess) is pushing (Michigan). I don’t know what Blake is saying to him, but it’s working. I don’t know (the details of) the conversations they’re having, but it’s working. And it’s not just rubbing off on Stefon. We’ve got the 2013 kid, Dorian O’Daniel who is ready to be one of the top linebackers in the country… he is listening. You’ve got Kendall Fuller... his door is wide open. People think it’s going to be Virginia Tech for him… but he is listening (to Countess). These kids are used to winning and they love each other. I just think if Michigan came aggressive at Good Counsel, they could land more than just Stefon.”

++++

And how about a few words from Stefon himself. It’s clear from comments from Diggs’ coach/mentor and the exchanges between Blake and Stefon on twitter that the strong friendship these two share could weigh heavily in the decision process. That became even more evident when I talked to Diggs.

From Stefon Diggs:
“(My coach and I) had a couple of conversations about Michigan. It would be a great place to turn me into a better person. As of right now I feel like I’m not yet Michigan material but I’ve got a lot of potential to be Michigan material. It would be a good fit for me.”

So what is ‘Michigan material?’

“Blake Countess”

So far Countess has been blowing me away...He could be a three or four year playmaker on the outside we havent seen since Leon Hall (The name of #2 is thrown out to much for my taste)

I love to hear this and the direction Michigan is moving in. This dude is a big time player and landing him in AA would be great. I think the fact Countess is his role model and the respect he has for him could land Diggs in AA. Considering the O-Line recruits coming in and the guys that are returing next year and the way Fitz is running the ball, we could really establish a great running game next year. If we had a playmaker like Diggs on the outside for Denard or Devin to throw to, it would be great.

I will pick up where celticpatsox12 left off. First Mattison actually sealed the deal with Countess. Remember he almost de-committed with the coaching change. Second Mattison and Hoke were smart enough to put the best players on the field and as a true freshman Countess is starting. Third Shane Morris is coming in for the 2013 class. It would be great to land this kid. The biggest remaining need for the 2012 class is WR.

Anyone know when he's supposed to take his official visit to AA?  I think its supposed to be some time this month, but he was very happy with his visit to Auburn and that worries me a little.  I know once he gets on campus and sees what Michigan's about he should sign with us, but you never know.  If we could land him it would really solidify this years class.

I am not sure UofM is big on Diggs as he is on UofM.

With a limited number of Schollies left I was suprised UofM sign the kid from Iowa with Diggs still in the mix. Maybe Hoke wants another WR especially with the unsettled nature of Stonem.

If UofM ends with a mix of Diamond, Banner, Diggs, or wright I would be happy.

I could be wrong but I believe Michigan is concerned about grades with Diggs and nothing else.  If his grades have improved and with the uncertain status of Stonum the Wolverines could put a late push for Diggs.  I don't think the staff is overly concerned about adding a third WR to this class.

With recruiting there is just so much speculation to it.  We know Diggs is high on Michigan but lets not forget he is in SEC country and will be tough get even if we r recruiting him hard which I'm not sure we r.  But then again I have no idea.

Whoever we get to finish this class will just be whipped cream on top of the sundae!!  This class is solid from top to bottom and covers many needs for Michigan..

GO BLUE!!

Thank you for your insights JDW and Gumby, I was reading about some of the recent 5 star recruits that went on to be big difference makers for their teams over the last few years and I would love to see more of them come to AA.  I'm thinking Pipkins and Diggs could really be those kind of players for us

Mattison is really bringing in a lot of defensive talent right now and I think that is kind of limiting the moves that can be made on offense.  Come next year, offense needs to be the priority.  We need a backup for Gardner and we still need OL help even though there are a couple good ones in this class.  WR is still going to be the biggest need.  We need another Braylon Edwards on the outside to really open up the defense for the running game and vise versa.  We need the running game to be able to open up the pass.

We need a backup for Gardner
We already have the top qb coming out in next years class... Shane Morris already a five star on most recruiting sites. Ty Issac has michigan high on his list already one of the best running backs coming out next year. We'll be fine...

^ yeah i have to agree ^

with morris coming in i think the skill positions will be alright.  i think we'll end up getting some skilled players that are wanting to have the top qb spread the ball around to them.

i think the focus should continue to be on defense and the offensive line.  games like the sugar bowl are the perfect example that even when the offense can't move the ball to save their lives a good defense can let you hang around in that game and still compete.  i think the defense will only improve going into the long term (might be a short term drop off with losing martin and van bergen) and if we can keep recruiting top-notch offensive linemen like we are this year we'll be a tough team to beat.

...don't get me wrong, i realize you need some skill on offense.  i just think you've got skill coming in with morris and now you put all of your efforts into stopping the other team and controlling the line when you have the ball.

Then I need I addressed would be covered.  WR is still a bit of a problem but the projected top QB prospect should draw at least 1 or 2 solid WR's into AA.

With Stonum gone and Hemmingway headed to the NFL, is Roundtree the guy thats going to step up or will it be someone else?

If there is a dropoff it will be early in the season and by the time conference play starts the new rotation should be up to speed.  I like the look of the linebacking corps though. especially with the 2 freshmen.  Hopefully they get a lot of early playing time next year so they are fully spooled up by mid season.

The line Hoke is building, I am not suprised the top RBs in the country are looking at UofM. The switch to a hybrid spread for ohio takes them out of the mix for the SMARTER and great RBs coming from HS.

Another thing to add is Michigan cooled on Diggs about a month ago because he didn't qualify academically. Diggs is a hellva a football player so is Michigan's academic standards. Next year go blue!

I posted elsewhere what I heard on 97.1 today.

The Wolverines have ended their recruitment of Yuri Wright as some tweets he posted got back to Hoke and Company! The post were reported to be racial and sexual in nature. Social media for 18 year olds! Good luck Yuri! I hope you grow up it just won't be at UofM!

I disagree with that perspective. This years offensive class has been down right awesome and they are still going after Barnett and Diggs(if he is acedemically eligable).  The o-line with Magnussen and Kalis, Braden, Stacey and Bars reminds me of the 97 line(one of the best ever in college football history).    Backus, Jansen Hutchinson all NFL stars.    So they got Morris or Bellomy a nice line and 3 BIG receiveing targets  Darboa 6'2 and Cheesen 6'3. Along with Funchess at TE 6'5.  And a blocking tight end AJ Williams 6'6.  They added 2 runningbacks Johnson who I like and Houma who I'm still wondering what they saw in him.  Remember they got Flints finest last year Rawls and Hayes so we are looking good at running back.
