Christmas List!! (Which 4 recruits do you want?)

December 7, 2011 2:26 pm

Since it is the season of wishful thinking which 4 recruits do you think Michigan will finish their 2012 class with?

There are many to choose from but try to pick 4 recruits they really have a shot at.

Stefon Diggs- Need position at WR and strong ties with Michigan (Countess)

Josh Garnett- OL He seems like Michigan is the school for him!

Greg Garmon-  Surprise pick but need position of RB/Athelete..  (Don't think we get Dunn I think he would COMMITED already)

Javonte Magee- Another off the rader guy but fills the need of  DT..

Just thought it would be fun to see what people think we will end up with.  These are names that are thinking truly of coming to Michigan and fill the needs of the 2012 recruiting class.

Happy Posting!!

Christmas List!! (Which 4 recruits do you want?)

December 7, 2011 4:08 pm

I think Wright and Chesson are almost on board.  Diggs is at risk to qualify academically. Garnett won't move this far away from home. Diamond would be a dream but I don't think he will commit early enough. I think Taylor McNamara is down to ND and UofM with the edge going to the good guys.

My four are:

1) Wright
2) Chesson
3) Taylor Mcnamara-
4) Dunn- Brain over Heart

I don't know the names well enough to give names.  But, positionally, I feel they should round out the class with DT, RB, and WR x 2.

My wish list is:

Green Beckham, Aziz S/h/i/t/t/u, Joshua Garnett, Aaron Burbridge

I think we will get:

Chesson, Wright, and maybe Dunn and some tight end, I haven't heard anything about McNamara being interested in Michigan.

Christmas List!! (Which 4 recruits do you want?)

December 8, 2011 11:07 am

My realistic wish list is:

Stefon Diggs - we need an elite playmaker
Josh Garnett - would complete an oline class for the ages
Brionte Dunn - another good rb
Yuri Wright - the more good DB's, the better

We also have some other good recruits, Jordan Payton / Zach Banner / Jordan Diamond, that I would be very happy with if they were to commit. The prospect I want the most is Stefon Diggs.

Current Breakdown - 24 commits
QB - 0
RB - 1 (more of a return guy than a featured rb)
FB - 1
WR - 1
TE - 1
OL - 6
DL - 5
LB - 4
S - 3
CB - 2

On another note, I now see that AJ Williams is considered an OT and not a TE, he definitely has the size for OT. This makes our OLine class pretty big and should set us up very well for a few years by the time a few guys get red shirted (which I think is really good for olineman to get an extra year in the weight room).

It looks very promising!

Michigan has cut ties with a verbal commit from the state of Illinois due to academics, leaving an addition roster spot for the 2012 class.

IMO they fill it with either Armani Reeves (DB) or Will Johnson (TE).  GEAUX BLUE!!

Christmas List!! (Which 4 recruits do you want?)

December 9, 2011 9:27 am

I'm under the impression that Diggs and Burbridge have accedemic issues w/ UM higher standards, and that Pharoah is also out of the picture now, and perhaps Richardson too, if he's still flirting w/ other schools.   Hope I'm wrong on some of that, but that's the impression I have.

Taking Dunn away from ohio would be a nice little zinger on the boys down south, but I've not seen much mention of him outside of this message board.  Kid could be great, but it sounds like there's a lot more as good or better still available out there.  From the sounds of things, it looks like the RBs (I can't see Houma growing into a FB) coming in are a couple of hard-chargers and if nothing else, future special teams stars.  But if the holes are there, a 2-3 star slasher can put up 4-5star numbers.  Not to dismiss the talents of past UM RB's, but the reason for many of them did not meet high expectations in the NFL, is because those expectations were built on running behind UM OL - many of whom did live up to high expectations in the NFL.

[BTW:  Where are all those guys who said Gholston was the NFL pick over Long a couple yrs back - based on that one highlight of gholston beating long?   What's Gholston doing these days?  How's Long been doing?]

Is AJ Williams committed to switching to OT?  Or is that just and idea being tossed around?  I kinda like the idea of him at TE.

My thinking is rarely popular with other fans, but here's my $0.02 worth...

The current OL is going to take a hit come graduation, and some of the OL recruits will likely play a lot, if not start right away.  Since the OL keeps the RBs running, the QB's standing - which means the WR/TE's get passes - I really like the idea of the OL emphasis, and would like to see 2 more OL in this class (and williams stay at TE).  Some will get red-shirted and that sets the OL up for the next 5 yrs.  Skill is something that has to be developed and OL takes more time to develop the skills needed than is often is the case in the instinctive, speed / hand-eye coordination positions.  Usually, speed and hand-eye coordination are fairly natural.  OL is the true skill position.  Tongue out   THe others are speed positions (QB excepted).  Giving the incoming recruits on the OL a year to grow and develop and get out ahead of the future spot-light players makes sense to me. 3stars can look like 5stars when they get big holes to run through.  So my wish list has 2 more major OL talents.  Walking into the homes of class of '13 and '14 5star prospects and letting them know they'll have a carreer making OL opening holes and defending against the pass rush seems like it'd be a major selling point.

Same on the DL, if Pharoah is really out, I'd like to see another big time DE brought in along w/ another top DT eating up space in the middle - disrupting the bad-guy's Offense and keep those stud LB recruits clean.   Class of '13 and '14 DB & LB 5star studs should be attracted to the notion of dynamic pressure up front, clean pursuit angles and the consistent expectation of 3rd and long and the ball hanging up there for the INT.

I'd like to have the Trench masters already in place when the spot-light guys of the future are being recruited.

If I can't get 2 each, at or near the 5star level for the OL and DL...  I'd settle for another Top OL and DT with a stud DB and WR.

But that's just me...

Christmas List!! (Which 4 recruits do you want?)

December 9, 2011 10:22 am

My thinking is rarely popular with other fans, but here's my $0.02 worth...

I'm not sure why.  What you wrote makes a lot of sense, especially when looking at the current roster numbers.  I think disconnect with fans of recruiting is where the team intends to use each prospect, in relationship to his HS ranking and position (which we a fans will never know until the kid is on campus).

In the case of Michigan, they have been done recruiting DT's for a long time now but when looking at the commitment list, there is only 1 DT listed for the 2012 class.  The depth at that position creates some anxiety but with 4 DE's on board for next year, it's pretty clear to me that the staff feels much more comfortable with the potential of moving one of those guys inside, rather than securing an offer from a true DT that might not fit into their defensive plans as a whole.  When Michigan cooled on guys like Schutt and O'Brien, it told me a lot about how strongly they feel Wormley or Godin can be a difference maker inside.

Pharoah is out for sure.  He was going to play TE for the Wolverines anyway so no immediate need to replace him position for position.  Michigan already has multiple TE and DE pledges secured so expect them to go after some big fish with these last valuable roster spots.

As for Williams, the recruiting sites may have changed his position to OL but everything I've heard still has him slated to play TE when he arrives on campus.  GEAUX BLUE!!

All great posts guys!  Love to hear some of the insider info from Windy (great stuff).  Its just amazing how we recruit then may cool off a bit on kids.  Was curious in a above post someone mentioned the loss of a recruit through grades.  Name??  Also I read a article awhile back that Diggs had turned his grades around enough for us.  Is this false?  Sure would love to see him in AA.  With all that said there will be a recruit or two that will be  Michigan Men that there will be a late push for just have no idea who it will be.  Oh the fun of recruiting!!

Keep up the great posts!!

Christmas List!! (Which 4 recruits do you want?)

December 10, 2011 11:31 am

True freshman O-Linemen never start at a school like U-M.  For all the reasons coyote said.  Of all the great OL's that U-M has had through the years, if they started as freshman, they were redshirt freshman.  That includes Long, Hutchinson, and any other OL you can think of.  I don't see any true freshman in there next year either.  Bryant should replace Huyge in the mix, and Khoury or Miller should replace Molk.  Otherwise it's the exact same mix of guys as this year (Lewan, Omameh, Schofield, Barnum, and Mealer).

My feeling is that, yes, we needed to recruit OL, but I believe we have already done that.  We have 5 (or 6 depending on Williams' position) OL’s already committed for 2012, including three 4 or 5 stars.  That’s plenty, especially when considering we have Bryant and Miller from the 2011 recruiting class.  In 2013 we should then get another 4 or 5, and I would think that would be the normal cycle going forward.  College recruiting is about balance since guys at all positions only get 4 years of eligibility.  Yes we needed to get OL, DL, and LB in here as Hoke took over because RR neglected those areas.  But with the exception of maybe another big DT or two (and I know Hoke is still working on that), he has taken care of those positions now between the 2011 and 2012 recruiting classes.  The hole going forward is now at the offensive skill positions, WR and RB.  A good WR could come in here and depending on how things shake out may even get real playing time next year.  A RB is needed for depth in case of injury to Fitz or Rawls, and for the future.

I see Yuri Wright mentioned by a couple posters...  anyone know what his status is, is he a likely committ, or just another who has UM on his list but who knows what the kid is thinking?

Christmas List!! (Which 4 recruits do you want?)

December 10, 2011 5:03 pm

Via DGDestroys twitter, Michigan has started to get back in to things with cornerback Yuri Wright. "Yuri Wright, says Michigan is the school he's always wanted to go to and that they'll definitely get a visit.
That was from back in August. I've read some of his tweets from boards and think it comes down to Michigan, Colorado or Georgia. He seems to really like Michigan and has a visit like the 2nd week of January to AA. Prime time to pull a recruit just before signing day. I have a gut feeling Yuri will be Blue.

I would like a WR, RB, Yuri, and another top athelethe that Hoke thinks will round out this class. Kinda leaning towards a DT. Can never have enough big men in the trenches.

If Dunn was to commit and Yuri, think that would make my list complete. Any more talent would be gravy. Is AA turning into the next Linebacker U? I really like this years Linebacker recruiting, as long as they stay committed.
