Teague...

January 3, 2012 8:48 pm

(and I have said it all year) is still no good at point guard.  Again, I hate to sacrifice Lamb's scoring by putting him at point, but we are MUCH better with Teague on the bench.  The dude currently I believe has 8 turnovers against Arkansas Little Rock and is getting TOASTED by their 5'10" point guard.  He is a terrible defender and a liability playing the point.  He is a weak shooter from everywhere on the court.  When he looks lost against a team like this, how does Cal continue to play him against real teams?  He terrifies me every time he handles the ball.  What is he going to do against the likes of Florida, Miss State, and Vandy?  All these teams are very strong at point guard.  He'll get murdered in these games (especially on the road) if we play him.

I really thought Teague would have shown some signs by this point in the season, but he really has not progressed.  I hope he turns it around, but I just don't see it happening.  If nothing else, it might be time to start playing him 20 minutes or less a game to at least wake him up.  Cal just allows him to make mistakes as if the entire season is a learning experience.  We are good enough to win it all without him at the point.  At some point, you have to adjust, don't you?

Thoughts?

I agree he is struggling, but I disagree that we are good enough to win it all w/o him.  Point guard is BY FAR the toughest position to play in college basketball.  It's going to take him longer to adjust than guys like Davis and MKG simply b/c of the position he's playing.  We are talented enough to win the title this year, but w/o Teague, there is no shot.  We will not win a title w/ Lamb at the point b/c sooner or later, it will affect his scoring.  Lamb is good enough to play the point, but we need his scoring.  I really believe we will hang #8 this year, but it will be w/ Teague at the point.  He will get it.  He's too talented not to.

Cal for like the third or fourth time has now stated that the team is better without him on the floor.  I mean Miller would and does play better at the point than Teague does.  No doubt that Teague has talent but this teams weakness is the PG position.

I think Cal gives him some shots in the SEC games and if he doesn't step up to the bar, I would play Miller, Lamb, and even Polson at the PG positions to get his end in gear.

When Teague thinks run the team first instead of score, then he is a solid player.

When he worries about scoring, then he gets mixed up. I have faith that he gets it before the big dance.

Come on Teague, look at Kendall Marshall's game and figure it out, the guy can't score but he gets 20+ points per game for his team because he averages more than 10 APG.

Have to agree Teagues lack of assists worries me about the future of the team. SEC opponents can watch the film, pack in the defense. Taking away the dribble-drive can give this team fits. Lamb and Miller have the best mid-range shots and their scoring will go down at point position. I think Teague will come around by seasons end. What really worries me about our team as of late,is the turnovers. Must fix this problem or gonna be more losses in conference play. Hope they get it together !!!

Well the TO's have really been the last two games and they have been Miller in the UofL game and MKG last game.  If they come down to their 1TO per game average then the TO's are not bad.  I think we will be OK as well.  I find it interesting that our two wings MKG and Miller are our most consistent players at mid-year.  If Jones pulls down 12 boards per game he will be a star again.  Lamb will get opportunities for his stroke and that midrange game is still there.  Davis just is.   Our team is equiped to do OK.  Again, Teague needs to measure his game in Assists per game and TO's per game.  He needs to start averaging 8 APG and 2 TOPG.  He will get 10 points easily per game once that happens.  If he does this then he is a definite lottery pick and will win number 8.

@AlwaysTrueBLUE I don't like Miller at the point guard position. I think he has a tendency to be clumsy with the ball and, in my mind, anyway, he is not a solid passer (at least not enough for a PG). If they are going to switch up the lineup, why not put Lamb at the point guard spot and Darius at the SG? Heck, Miller can shoot the perimeter J about as well as anybody on the team and has a reliable drive with a good head on his shoulders. And I don't think Lamb would have to sacrifice too many points switching from the SG to the PG.

But, like you AlwaysTrueBLUE, I do think this team is better with Teague on the floor WHEN HE WORRIES ABOUT THE TEAM AND NOT HIS STAT BAR!!!

Guess I'm not necessarily proposing Miller at the point over Lamb or anyone else, all I am saying is that I think at this moment in time Miller is more capable than Teague at running the team.  I mean the guy is second on the team in assists and is only about 1 assist per game below Teague's numbers playing the wing.

He could play point if he wanted to and be a good one at that but my personal preference is for Teague to get his head out of what ever rear end its end and play the PG position the way its supposed to be played.  If that happens, this teams motor will really get reved up and everyone will look like super stars.

ATB, right........I do think they can get back to the 1TO spot they were in a couple weeks ago. When teams pack it in on them I think they need to not try to force it for the dribble-drives sake. Last couple games they have turned over the ball or put up a bad shot while trying to force their way through a packed in defense. With the way Miller and Lamb can pull up and hit it they can shoot teams out of that style of defense which opens up the whole floor. Thus more success!! "IF" Teague does not improve (but I think he will) then Miller would be my choice for point, upperclassman and smart, I think he would do great.

Here's to a great conference season and post season !!!! The potential for great things is definatly there !

Have to give Teague props for the USC game, he did what he needed to he ran the team, the points came, the assists came, the TO's were low.  All against Ellington which was one of the best PG's in the SEC last season.

Teague was good Saturday.  This was a great sign.  He had probably his best game of the year.  I completely agree with you.  I still don't understand why he continues to lead the team in minutes.  I had not looked at that statistic much this year.  Overall, he and MKG are tied for first on the team in minutes played.  Hopefully he continues to improve.  It will be a test to see how he plays on the road Saturday at Tennessee.

How on earth did Tennessee ever beat Florida?  Talk about a two crazy teams.  One thing is for certain is that Cuonzo Martin can coach, lets see if he can recruit as well.

What is wrong with Twany Beckham?  I thought he was suppose to back up teague in the pg position?  I prefer not to have Lamb run the point so much as back-up because it takes away from his scoring nature.  Is there a problem with Beckham's development?

Yes according to Cal that is the case.  He said Polson was ahead of him on the depth chart.

I didn't see the S.C. game, but didn't Beckham play against Louisville for a couple minutes?  I didn't see Polson in that game at all.  What is the deal?

Hey played but not PG, Lamb moved over to that position.  It's clear that Lamb and Miller handle the PG or as Cal calls it the lead guard position when Teague is out.

I think all this talk about being better w/o Teague is crazy. This kid has all the tools to be a very good point guard. He is far from the Wall/Knight mold at that position, but he is more like a true point guard instead of a scorer dressed up as a point guard. As this team continues to develop Teague will become more "Marshall" like. I agree he doesn't show much in the area of shooting, but has shown some strong ability to finish around the rim. Now that it seems Jones is on his way back this team should be ready to move into another gear and Teague should be ready to drive this Ferrari. I would like to see Teague and MKG give all their 3 pt attempts to Lamb and Miller and even Wiltjer. We would see our team 3 pt shooting % increase and cause teams to stretch their defense even more and open up lanes for Teague and MKG. As stated earlier in the thread I do believe this team will hang #8. They have more talent and tools than any other team out there. We will see coming soon how good this team is as we start playing these road SEC games. Don't forget that last years team went 2-6 in SEC road games last year. Let's see how Teague handles the conference road games and I think we are all going to see that he is the man for the job!!

Youre right, he is the man for the job because he is the only man we have for the job.  I think he will be OK as well I just want to see him drive that Ferrari instead of try to work on it.

BigBlueDreams, excellent point about Teague and MKG forfeiting 3 point looks in favor of Lamb and Miller.  For whatever reason, after both shooting over 40% from three last season, they have not taken many threes.  Excellent point.

Marquis was AWESOME last night. Eleven assists and only 4 field goal attempts. That is what I'm talking about! If he plays like that in March, we won't be losing. Way to go, Mr. Teague. Keep it up.
