Well I've seen a few shots that looked as though they may or might have been forced a little bit. Just my opinion of course. So that and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee but I think for the most part he's doing an excellent job.
First I think he's a true point guard in that he should look to pass first and second and shoot third. And we got kinda spoiled by having Brandon Knight last season that was more of a hybrid shooting guard, and by John Wall the season before that just had that uncanny ability to knock down the big shot and always make his layups.....
Having said that I think Teague is more like Wall than he is like Knight. Also to be fair and I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but Teague's supporting cast is alot stronger than Wall's or Knight's. He's not relied on as much is what I mean.
Now I've also seen games this season where the opposition seems to almost be daring him to shoot it. And in that case he has too. Just my opinion again of course, but it seems that if the defense collapses and dares you to shoot then you have to shoot to keep them honest...Right?
Also, and I may be wrong on this but seems as though I read that Teagues turnover to assist ratio is much better than Knights or Walls...
Bottom line the guy is improving and he's fast and will make you pay in the open court. A great defender and given the stage he's been put on I think he's doing a helluva job.
I know he's not Wall or Knight, but there was a stretch where he was playing great. My point was he hasn't been playing like that recently. In the last handful of games, I feel like he has been shooting too much, been playing out of control in the open court and forcing the issue too much. It's like he's trying to show people how good he can be, to improve his draft stock, but he's just not there. If this team wants to hang number 8, he cannot be shooting the second most shots on the team. I think everyone can agree on that, and the stats prove he has the second most shots on the team with by far the worst FG pct. If the defense dares him to shoot then yes he probably should but that's not what I've been seeing. There have been a number of occassions where he shot early in the shot clock for no reason.
As I said, I think there have been so many games where UK is up by 10+ and he feels the need to show off his skills, so he tries, but fails, IMO. His FG pct. is 41% but I'd be willing to bet it's closer to 30% on strictly jump shots. He has no business leaving after this year. No underclassmen should leave unless they are a top 15 pick. With the new NBA rules, it's just not worth it. Especially for someone like Teague who, with improvement, could become a top ten pick next year or the year after. I respectfully disagree when it comes to Teague doing a helluva job. He has done a decent job, but been very inconsistent. There's been times where this team is better off with Lamb at the point. I would hardly call that a helluva job for Teague if he's being outplayed at PG by a SG. We've probably just been spoiled by Wall and Knight, but Teague isn't even close to those two guys right now. He needs to stay within himself and not try to be more than he is.
If teague plays 35 minutes a game, this team won't make it to the final 4, he should be the 6th man on this team and he should never have the ball in his hands with less than 10 seconds on the shot clock. He is the most terrible starting point guard in the tournament.
The ball definitely seemed to get stuck in his hand yesterday. He has games and lapses. Our end of game management was just horrible jacking the 3 pointers when we should have been going inside. It wasn't only him, Lamb was jacking them as well. You are down by four with 25 seconds left, you attack the basket and put the other team on the line until you have to shoot the three.
Teague 0-7 from the field, 3 rbs,3 fouls and 6 assist. Lamb 2-11 from the field,6-6fts,1 rb and 4 fouls, also Miller shot the ball 17 times making 0nly 7, all this is a formula for losing a game. What bothers me the most is how many shots were missed from the 8-10 foot range. Kidd-Gilcrest being sidelined with his fouls eliminated their best midrange shooter.
I have absolutely no problem with Miller and Lamb shooting the ball that much. They have proven they are by far the best shooter on this team and I chalk yesterday up to just a bad day at the office. Losing Gilchrist hurt big time, but I'm gonna have to agree with wairting here. This team's success revolves around Teague and he has been about as bad as you can be at the point guard position lately. If he plays the way he did against LSU and Vandy they could lose early. If he plays like he did against Florida, I don't see anyone beating Kentucky.
I hate when they just give him the ball and he stands around at the top of the key, while everyone else stands around too. They were up 61-55 with 5 minutes left and they just sat on the lead and didn't run any offense until the last ten seconds of the shot clock. My hope is Calipari was holding a lot of stuff back so he could unleash it in the tournament. As I said before though, if he thinks he can play in the NBA he's got a rude awakening waiting for him, and I feel sorry for the team who takes him because they have a major project on their hands. Hopefully he doesn't make the same mistake his brother made and leave too early. However, at least his brother was much closer, Marquis has no business declaring for the NBA after this year.
