Gator Football Recruiting 2012

January 4, 2012 9:05 am

Hoping to start a discussion on Muschamp and Gator football recruiting. Where are the key battles lining up? How does our class stack up against the other schools? Is Muschamp fixing some of the issues that led to our team having so little depth this year? Who are the prizes still available? Are we going to lose anyone else from this class due to Weis' departure and Meyer's coach poaching? What are the key areas we need help with in 2012?

Rivals has us at #5 right now with only 18 recruits. Surely he will stock up this year since we have so many scholarships available, right?

No QBs....does this worry anyone? Does anyone else worry that Driskel or Brisset may not be the answer ?
Like the quality of the 2 OL that have committed especially Humphries out of Charlotte, but let's hope we reel in at least 2-3 more quality recruits.
4 DBs on the list; think this is a key area; Poole and Maye could contribute immediately.
Only 1 WR...yikes! Pittmann looks awesome, but we have to get more depth here. Got to think naming an OC quickly will be critical here.
Only 1 RB. With Demps and Rainey leaving, hopefully we can add another 4 or 5 star here.
Good set of LBs and DLs so far.

Welcome any information, analysis, commentary. I am hoping Muschamp and his ace recruiter Brian White come through with a great class. The foundation is there with a lot of great commits so far.

Thanks for starting this thread, NC!  Love recruiting season...

Yes, no QBs worries me a little.  Still, I'd expect that one of our current roster QBs will start and play well (my money's on Brisset right now). Unless the OL improves, depth could be an issue.  Need a couple more OLinemen to commit.

I expect that we'll see either Diggs or Aghalor commit (perhaps both), and if so there could be a domino effect with other signees.  Fingers crossed that this happens and adds some OL support.

Don't think we'll add another 4-5 star RB.  Matt Jones is a beast, and with Gillislee, Brown, and Burton already in the mix and heavy talk about Kelvin Taylor in 2013 I just don't see it.  Perhaps a 3 star kid (Gilmore or Allen, but we haven't even offered either yet).

Things could pick up once the OC position is filled, particularly if we have an NFL-level signal caller (White or Schottenheimer?).

LOVE the hire of Jeff Dillman for Strength and Conditioning!!!!!

It will be interesting to see how Jeff Dillman develops the program. I'm cautiously optomistic. I'm happy to see you are happy with the hire! As far as the NFL-level signal caller, I'm not sure that is necessarily a good thing. The college game is so different from the pros... but just about anybody would be better than the last two fiascos!

The OL concerns me. As you know, a good OL can make up for a lot! So, I'm not too concerned that no big name QBs are listed in the Scouting Reports. I agree that we're pretty loaded right now.

Matt Jones should have immediate impact. But then again, we need an effective OL to open holes for him. The existing OL should continue to improve over the offseason, but a handfull of highly rated recruits would mean the world!
Go Gators!

Like the quality of the 2 OL that have committed especially Humphries out of Charlotte, but let's hope we reel in at least 2-3 more quality recruits.
They have verbal commits from three offensive tackles and one guard according to Scout.com. I would agree that I like the quality at offensive line. Also like the quality at defensive back and tight end. I like the size of Matt Jones. Would be nice to have a back that could run over someone. Have two good size defensive tackles - one verbal & one signed.

I do not like that they have not signed a qb yet. Hopefully either Brisset or Driskel will play well next year, but I personally think that they should try to sign a qb every year. Also agree that they need to sign more WRs. Would love to see them sign a big WR.

Scout has the Gator class ranked 7th.

Gator Football Recruiting 2012

January 7, 2012 6:13 pm

Just heard 5 star DE Jonathan Bullard committed to Gators out of Shelby, NC. Very impressive job recruiting for the DL; Bullard with Damien Jacobs, Dante Phillips, and Juco Visesio Salt....if they all stick with their commitments Muschamp will have brilliant foundation manning the DL for next 4 years to fill in behind Powell, Easley, Floyd.

This signing brings our Rivals class ranking up to #3 behind Alabama (perennial oversigner) and Texas.

Wish List: (If we land even a couple of these we will have an outstanding class)
DL: Jordan Jenkins....he's announcing Monday and 50-50 between UF and Bama; doesn't bode well that he scheduled it on Bama's big day
WRs:Doriel Green-Beckham, Stefan Diggs, Nelson Agholor.....best shot at Nelson
OL: Avery Young, Kyle Murphy
DB: Tracy Howard, Kevon Seymour, Trae Elston
Ath: Josh Harvey-Clemons

Hate that Bama has such a great class again. Worry about Urban Meyer's statement few weeks ago suggesting part of the reason he quit is he knew he would have to cheat to compete with Bama and LSU (and we all thought it was due to his health and wishing to spend more time with his family). No sour grapes, will always be grateful for what Urban brought to the Gators.

Hope Muschamp gets his OC soon so we can make a big push for these WRs. See he is interviewing Boise State's OC. That would be hard to argue with, they made Kellen Moore look like an all pro.

I had heard that Agholor roomed with Marcus Maye for the all-star game and Maye said that Agholor had UF as his favorite. I would be amazed if UF got Bekham. Seem to be in the lead for Tracy Howard. Alabama is already at 26. I can't imgaine they could sign much more than that.

Big weekend for Gator football recruiting. Hopefully they will get a few verbal committments out of it. Stefon Diggs and Tracy Howard would be great. Interesting to see Bryan Cox Jr on the visit list. Also interesting to see Skyler Mornhinweg is visiting. Would be great to sign a good qb prospect and some wide receivers.

Scout.com: Gators have No. 5 class
The Gators' unofficial 19-player recruiting class is fifth-best nationally, according to Scout.com. Florida, whose players have a 3.79-star average on a scale of 5, trails only Alabama, Texas, Michigan and Ohio State.

Sounds like Will Muschamp is doing something right.

Gator Football Recruiting 2012

January 22, 2012 4:40 pm

The Gator 2012 recruiting class is shaping up well with the current set of 19 commitments. Lot of credit to Will Muschamp with this class dealing with loss of OC, loss of strength coach, Urban Meyer, and all the buzz around FSU, Georgia, South Carolina, LSU, Alabama. Who knows how many will switch and how many we will add, but the Gators have a reasonable shot at a large number of remaining uncommitted highly ranked recruits. If we are able to win a few of these battles we will have a chance at the #1 class as I think the classes ahead of us are pretty much maxed out in their commitments (Alabama, Texas).

Three brilliant receivers left on the board: Green-Beckham, Nelson Agholor, and Stefon Diggs. Green-Beckham is one of the highest rated receiver recruits in years. Gators are listed on even terms with 7 other schools right now, but the rumors are he is leaning towards either Arkansas or Missouri.
Can you imagine what it would be like to get a couple of these two in with Dubose? Here's hoping our new OC from Boise State is working some magic.

Couple of strong DLs left on board: Darius Hamilton and Leonard Williams. We are 1 of 4 with Darius and 1 of 2 (Auburn) with Williams. Since we lost Salt to Utah would love to grab one or both of these guys.

Couple of nice OLs left with us among frontrunners: Kyle Murphy and Avery Young. We are competing with 3 Pac 10 schools for Murphy and 1 of 3 with Young (Auburn/Ga).

Other open recruits we are looking good for: DB Tracy Howard (us and LSU) and Athlete-LB Harvey-Clemens (us and Georgia).

Some interesting side plots between now and Beb 1st:

Heard we are talking to the top rated QB on the board Jameis Winston who has committed to FSU. I know a long shot, but wouldn't that be sweet?

Will Meyer close a few more signings and make this another epic class? Gosh he is a solid recruiter, how he does this when they are facing no bowl amazes me.

Watching how Pease closes with recruits....has got to be an effective story what he did at Boise, all the opportunities to play right away for WRs, QB, ....right?

If anyone has any better information on these recruits, stories or on the recruiting front, please pass along.

Go Gators!

Ive heard some rumors that Donte Fowler Jr might pull a shocker as well and come to UF. while its a longshot, its not impossible.

if i could have any 3 of the bbig recruits left that have florida on their list it would be Agholor, Harvey Clemens, and Howard. if we could somehow land those 3 i think it would be huge. harvey will be a stud LB and howard can flat out cover. reminds me alot of joe haden.

The news that Greg Schiano is leaving Rutgers to take the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' job could not have come at a worse time for the Scarlet Knights.

Darius Hamilton, Don Bosco PrepRutgers was in the midst of a very solid recruiting class, its second straight impressive crop of players. In fact, just a few days ago, Rutgers flipped offensive lineman J.J. Denman, who had previously been committed to Wisconsin.

Darius Hamilton and Devin Fullerwere both within Rutgers' crosshairs as well. In an attempt to secure Hamilton, the nation's No. 29 recruit, Schiano was supposed to visit Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) this morning, sources told MaxPreps.

He never showed.

Now, Florida could be the favorite to snag Hamilton, while Nebraska receives a boost in its efforts to land Fuller, who starred at Northern Valley (Old Tappan, N.J.)

Well, the Buccs have a new coach, and my TB fans are scratching their heads over this one.  Then again, I'm still doing the same over the dude my Chiefs promoted to HC.

Hopefully this bodes well for us.  The Badgers might reflip the OL they lost to the Scarlet Knights.  Wouldn't be surprised to see some other recruits jump ship on this fiasco.

Gator Football Recruiting 2012

January 27, 2012 1:42 pm

Good update in the Orlando Sentinel yesterday on the Florida Gators top remaining targets for their recruiting class. Hope for some good news next week! Nice to see Will is willing to attend church with the Clemons family, not sure I could see Nick Satan doing that.

With National Signing Day less than a week away, Florida already seems to have a top five class. All three major recruiting services have UF as one of the top classes in the country – with Rivals.com and ESPN ranking the class as fourth in the country and Scout.com putting the Gators in fifth.

But they can add some top recruits to the class between now and signing day, or even a few days after. Because of the Gators’ low scholarship numbers, they can add as many as 28 in the class to get back to the NCAA limit of 85. They have 20 committed players so far, including six early enrollees. It would be surprising but not impossible to add eight in the final days.

Here’s a look at some of the top recruits left on Florida’s board that would boost the class.

WR Nelson Agholor, Tampa Berkeley Prep
6-foot-2, 180 pounds
Rankings: Rivals (third) and ESPN (sixth) both rank Agholor as a receiver, while Scout has him as the fifth-ranked safety nationally. He is the No. 1 prospect in the Sentinel’s Florida Top 100.
Where the Gators stand: Agholor has kept pretty quiet in terms of where schools stand, but it seems that UF is in the running with Florida State and USC. He took an official visit to Florida and will announce his decision on signing day.
Prediction: Florida

WR Stefon Diggs, Olney (Md.) Our Lady of Good Counsel
6-foot-, 185 pounds
Rankings: Both Rivals and Scout rank Diggs as the second-best receiver in the country, while ESPN ranks him in third as an athlete.
Where the Gators stand: Diggs visited in January and has been thought to be leaning toward picking Florida. During his visit, he tweeted, “I love it . Love the environment and just the thought of being a gator.” But the talented receiver was still planning trips to Ohio State and Maryland and will wait to announce until Feb. 10.
Prediction: Florida

DT Dante Fowler Jr., St. Petersburg Lakewood
6-foot-3, 232 pounds
Rankings: Fowler is ranked as high as third at defensive end by Rivals, while Scout and ESPN have him in 10th at the position. He ranks 26th in the Sentinel’s Florida Top 100.
Where the Gators stand: Fowler took an official visit to Florida in late January and enjoyed the visit. While he has remained committed to Florida State, he has long flirted with the idea of coming to Florida. During his visit, UF coaches showed him more of the depth chart and where he would fit in. While he said he remains 100 percent committed, he does plan to pick from three hats – Florida, FSU and USC – on signing day.
Prediction: Florida State

ATH Josh Harvey-Clemons, Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes
6-foot-5, 208 pounds
Rankings: ESPN (first) and Scout (second) have him ranked at outside linebacker, while Rivals lists him as the No. 2 athlete nationally.
Where the Gators stand: UF is in good position with the top recruit from the state of Georgia. Will Muschamp visited with Harvey-Clemons family during a church service, and assistant coach Brian White was expected to speak at his high school’s football banquet. Florida State and Georgia are also making a late push, and Harvey-Clemons will choose between the three on signing day.
Prediction: Flip a coin between Florida and Georgia. They’ve been his co-leaders.

CB Tracy Howard, Miramar
5-foot-11, 175 pounds
Rankings: Rivals and ESPN have him as the top cornerback in the country, while Scout ranks him fourth. He is third in the Sentinel’s Florida Top 100
Where the Gators stand: Howard was one of several prospects to visit UF last weekend and has the Gators among his finalists. He’ll choose between UF, Florida State and Miami on signing day.
Prediction: Florida

OT Jake Meador, Whiteland (Ind.) Community High
6-foot-7, 305 pounds
Rankings: One of the lower-ranked remaining targets, Meador is the highest in Rivals’ ranking as the 43rd-best offensive tackle.
Where the Gators stand: Meador was originally committed to Ole Miss until the school fired Houston Nutt and Meador de-committed. That opened the door late for his final schools – Florida, Missouri and Wisconsin. Meador visited UF in mid-January and has his last official visit planned for Wisconsin this weekend.
Prediction: Missouri

QB Skyler Morninwheg, Philadelphia St. Joseph’s Prep
6-foot-3, 215 pounds
Rankings: ESPN rates the QB the highest at 19th nationally at the position
Where the Gators stand: A late addition to Florida’s board, Mornhinweg plans to visit Virgina Tech before deciding. He’s been committed to Penn State, but another prospect from the Philly area thinks he’ll flip. Warminster (Pa.) Archbishop Wood TE Colin Thompson, a Florida commit, was on the same visit to Florida as Mornhinweg last weekend and said he thinks the QB will pick Florida on signing day.
Prediction: Mornhinweg had been previously committed to Stanford, so it’s anyone’s guess if the QB could flip again. For now, Penn State.

LB Schyler Miles, Tampa Berkeley Prep
6-foot-2, 220 pounds
Rankings: ESPN gives the inside linebacker the highest ranking at 22 at the position, while Rivals has him 27th and Scout has him 60th. He’s 80th in the Sentinel’s Florida Top 100.
Where the Gators stand: Miles has had West Virginia among his top schools since the summer, but Kansas got into the mix late after former Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis was hired as its head coach in December. After visiting all three, Miles will announce his choice of those final schools on signing day.
Prediction: Kansas

DT Vincent Valentine, Edwardsville (Ill.) High
6-foot-3, 300 pounds
Rankings: Rivals rates him the highest at 28th at the position, while ESPN has him 34th and Scout ranks him as the 56th best defensive tackle.
Where the Gators stand: Nebraska has long been on his list and at one point was considered his favorite but a visit to Florida in January has made it more difficult for the Valentine. He’s expected to take a final visit to Illinois and choose between the three schools.
Prediction: Nebraska

OL Avery Young, Palm Beach Gardens
6-foot-6, 273 pounds
Rankings: Scout has him the highest as the fifth-ranked offensive tackle, while ESPN (eighth) and Rivals (ninth) also have him in the top 10. Young is 14th in the Sentinel’s Florida Top 100.
Where the Gators stand: Young’s four finalists – Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Miami – all planned visits to Palm Beach Gardens this week, according to coach Chris Davis.
Prediction: Young has kept pretty quiet on which way he might be leaning so far, so it’s hard to tell. But Florida would be a good guess.

Gator Football Recruiting 2012

January 28, 2012 2:12 am

One of the most famous names -- and better quarterbacks -- in the class of 2012 has reportedly decided to head for the SEC.

Gator Country has reported that Skyler Mornhinweg, son of current Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator and former Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg, has pledged to sign with Florida over Penn State. Skyler originally committed to Stanford as a rising sophomore at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, but switched to the Nittany Lions last summer when Jim Harbaugh left the Cardinal.

New Gator offensive coordinator Brent Pease and Marty Mornhinweg played together at Montana, potentially giving Pease a window in which to make his pitch to Skyler after the recent coaching transition at Penn State. Skyler visited Florida's campus last weekend, Gator Country reports.

ncgator,

I hope those predictions are correct. Getting Agholor, Diggs, Howard and maybe Young would be incredible. Definitely need to at least pick up either Diggs or Agholor. Need to find some playmakers at the wide receiver position. Have looked at a couple different sites and they vary on where these uncommitted players end up. Muschamp has what looks to be a real good class so far. Adding a couple more players could make this a great class.

"pro-style" fail

February 1, 2012 8:48 pm

gator... whatever,

looks like those predictions didn't hold up very well. That's the bad news.

the GREAT news is that we did hold on to (sort of) 2 WRs, and 3 OLs. We even managed to hold onto Matt Jones, which is unbelievably huge. He (along with the WRs and OL) could be the keystone(s) that makes the unbelievably lethargic Gator offense of the past 3 seasons finally fire on all 8 cylinders. These signings, along with Mornhinweg, makes me think Muschamp is bringing the spread back. As much as I hate the spread offense, I think running the Boise Playbook makes a lot of sense for the incumbant coaching staff. It may give them an extra season or two of pay before they are axed! It may even give us a remote shot at another 7-6 season. Welcome back 1970s!
