Trade Ware and switch to 4-3 Defense?

Samson ~

IDK, Axe.  I'm either insane or tired of living in denial, but its hard to argue the fact that they just can't get it done when the game is on the line.

-------

Not arguing that at all -- I want them to be able to take the next step as much as the next guy.  But this team is SO much better than that 3-13/1-15 team of the late-80's it's not even a legitimate comparison.

I think our defense is pretty devoid of talent, save Ware, Ratliff and Lee...and I'm not even sure Ratliff is an every down player at this point.

-------

I wouldn't say it's devoid of talent, but it definitely needs an upgrade.

Ratliff should be moved to DE -- that move probably should have been made at least one year ago. We need a true NT, a legitimate big man in the middle.

We have a decision to make on Spencer, who's up for a new contract. If we don't sign him, that means we'll have to address the OLB position at some point.

The secondary is the area that needs re-tooling the most. My guess is Newman's played his last down as a Cowboy; I'd like to see us draft a CB with a high pick (1st or 2nd round if possible), and also add a mid-level veteran. Gerald Sensabaugh just signed a 5-year deal, so he's not going anywhere; Elam's future is tenuous. Either way, we need to address the safety position as well (again, in the draft and possibly also through free agency).

Maybe the Cowboys get lucky and get to sign both <span style="color: #3b5998;">Carlos Rogers AND <span style="color: #3b5998;">LaRon Landry in Free Agency after dumping <span style="color: #3b5998;">Terence Newman or at least restructuring his contract to reflect his play on the field. So Newman would go from $9 mil a year to about $3 mil, allowing the cap space the Cowboys need to sign some QUALITY free agents. Having a secondary of <span style="color: #3b5998;">Mike Jenkins, LaRon Landry, <span style="color: #3b5998;">Gerald Sensabaugh, and Carlos Rogers would be alot better than what they have had in years.
Then maybe they get lucky in the draft and get OG David DeCastro from Stanford in Rd 1 and move him to Center (OL of <span style="color: #3b5998;">Tyron Smith, <span style="color: #3b5998;">Montrae Holland, David DeCastro, Kyle Kosier, and <span style="color: #3b5998;">Doug Free would also be better than what they have had in years), and get really lucky and land Memphis DT Dontari Poe at #45 in Rd. 2. A TRUE 3-4 NT- then maybe the 3-4 D in Dallas would be worth a crap for once.
I just hope the Cowboys get better in the off-season by making some shrewd personnel moves and drafting well. I'm sick of the same crap year after year. Delirious,

Here is the problem.  We have a lot of accelerated signing bonuses hitting our cap next year and I really don't think we can accomdate the asking price for both Carlos Rogers and Laron Landry, maybe 1 we could.  Secondly,  I really get quezy about taking an OG in the first round.  That's one position  that can be had throughout the draft so Decastro better be one helluva can't miss prospect.  I would prefer targeting a CB or OLB with the 14th pick myself.

Trade Ware and switch to 4-3 Defense?

Was the Herschel Walker trade insane?  Depends what you get for the trade.

-------

Dallas was 3-13 the year before, and on its way to a 1-15 season. We were totally devoid of talent -- a completely different situation that what we have now.

------------

Axe, whats the point of having all this talent if they cant win as a team?  Is there really a difference of 1-15 and 8-8?  IMO no, because neither record got them in the playoffs.  Personally, I would welcome a complete rebuild.  This group of guys fold way too easy when the chips dont fall their way.  They dont have enough fight, but they do have alot of quit in them...

Hold on there -- I never said we have "all this talent."  I said we're in much better shape from a talent perspective than the 1988-1989 Dallas teams.

Is there really a difference of 1-15 and 8-8?

-------

Yes -- at 1-15 you're at the bottom of the barrel. At 8-8 you're that much closer to being a good team.

Personally, I would welcome a complete rebuild.  This group of guys fold way too easy when the chips dont fall their way.

-------

This team needs more leaders, more glass-eaters. Guys like Witten and Ware can lead by example, but we DO need vocal leaders, guys who can rally the troops.

I DON'T think we need to completely "rebuild" to accomplish that, though.

Trade Ware and switch to 4-3 Defense?

The Cowboys don't need to rebuild, and they sure as hell don't need to trade Ware. This team was tied for 6th in the NFL in sacks, the problem was, they could cover my grandma. The defense ended 14th in the league, and it was the pass defense that watered that down. The Cowboys were 7th against the run, but 23 against the pass. I think we need to draft defense, CB, SS, NT, OLB, if we have anything left get a center. Swap the Tackles and we would be in buisness. The problem with them being 6th in sacks was Ware had almost half of them, get another OLB that can rush the QB oposit of Ware, and a NT that can blow up the middle and that will make the secondary better right off the bat. Move Ratliff to end, and work in the rookie seconday, Newman has to go. The O-line wasn't great, but it wasn't exactly awfull either. They were young and need time to get better, and we also need a running back that can stay healthy all year, haven't had that since Emmitt. Murry was helping this line earlier with his running, but he couldn't stay healthy, which is the story of his career even in college. Oh, and after signing everyone they can afford, Jerry Jones needs to leave the country until the season is over.
