If the rumors are true and as a life long Chargers fan, I would be jumping all over Marty Schottenheimer right now. This is the BEST choice from all the names I have seen.

Remember, aside from his playoff woes, which he seems to always have, this is a coach with 200 wins. 200! He took our bottom feeding Chargers team and made us competitors. He was fired (not for not being a good coach) but for being unable to work with our GM. Marty will get discipline out of your squad, and he will rebuild your franchise. He did it in KC, he did it in SD, and he will do it in TB as well. Pair him up with a good play-calling OC and you are good to go.

I was so excited and happy for Marty that I had to come on this board to let all of you know! Keep your fingers crossed because this would be an excellent hire and in a few years, you will be competitors.

Agreed Big Flipper - my fellow Chargers board contributor - Also let me add Bucs fans, most of us Boltsf ans would rather still have Marty as opposed to Norv Turner.  Norv Sucks.

Bucfan, we have been down that road before, but when was the last time we had that problem? That is a HUGE upgrade from recent results.

I am ALL for Getting Marty in TB. Get him a contract yesterday already. He would be good for Josh Freeman and the offense. Still baffles me why the San Diego Super Chargers let him walk, actually I know why, but it wasn't totally his fault. This is the greatest news when it comes to a signing or addition that this team has gotten in years.

With the news that Brian Schottenheimer has left the Jets, I think all signs are pointing to the Bucs hiring Marty. We might be seeing another father/son team like Washington has right now.

I'm surprised there aren't more TB fans excited about this!!? Marty is a good coach and the main thing he can and will do is to change the culture of the franchise. When I say that, I mean that he changed the culture in SD to where SD fans now EXPECT the team to WIN whereas before he arrived, we EXPECTED to LOSE. Look how many SD fans JUST THIS YEAR wanted NORV gone--mind you he has NOT had a losing season. As Charger fans, we now EXPECT to win, and EXPECT to go deep into the playoffs. Anything less than that is a failure. Marty did that to us, and he will do that to you as well.

He's fresh off a UFL Championship, and I think he deserves another shot in the NFL. You need a play-calling OC though, because if you let Marty call the plays, every drive will look like this: run, run, pass, punt--this didn't even work for the Chargers and WE HAD LaDainian Tomlinson.

Haha! Well put.

I actually want the Chargers no higher than the #3 seed when they're in the playoffs the next year. Everytime we have a bye, we lose the first game. Everytime we play on WC Weekend, we win the first game.

BTW, I just read a story somewhere online about Schotty and when polling the comments below the story, 80% of the responders were pro-schotty. Food for thaught.

For 5 years I've been saying how San Diego made a mistake in letting him go - and we're still stuck with our mistake - guaranteed loss when the Chargers go to Tampa in the fall - Marty never loses those kind of games.  Our coach loses every game that has any kind of meaning.

I like the thoughts of Billick as Pewter Report stated today.  I completly forgot about him.  Except there is no indication that the Bucs are reaching out to him.

Mike Zimmer and Rob Chudzinsky just got added to the interview list. I like the fact they reached out to Chudzinsky, he really did some great things with Cam Newton and the Panthers offense. I think he would be good for Josh Freeman. Mike Zimmer is a defensive coordinator and what he would do for the offense is something to wonder but as a defense he had the Bengals playing some good defense and would help the defense tremendously. So do you get a offensive mind or a defensive mind or go with the experience and track record of a Marty Schottenheimer? If you make a hit with Chudzinsky or Zimmer you have them for a while, if you hire Schottenheimer you pretty much know what you are getting with less risk but you only have him likely for a few years before he retires from coaching then you are in the hunt for a new head coach again. I like Brian Billick, great defensive coach but if you remember his Baltimore days he was a defensive genius but ultra conservative on offense. Then again all he ever had was Kyle Boller and the last of Trent Dilfer.

Billick is an offense guy. I actually think he worked with Brad Johnson in Minnesota. He never developed a QB in Baltimore. I'm not interested.

I really like Chud.

And I've become more ok with picking Richardson. I just don't want an offensive lineman.

O Line needs to be the last thing drafted at 5. The 2 logical selections are Morris Claiborne and to me Trent Richardson. I have heard some noise about the LB from Boston College as well but that seems a bit high for a LB. Then again Von Miller went No. 2 overall a year ago.

Kuechley is no where near Von Miller. He is Barrett Ruud all over again and just another draft pick that will frustrate fans and do nothing for jersey sales. Lose-lose.

I'm growing away from Claiborne. Kirkpatrick and Janoris Jenkins are equally as good in my mind so trading down would be optimal. Maybe trade with Miami (so they can get Griffin) for their 1,3,4 this year and their 1,4 next year. We might have to throw in something too but I don't think Claiborne is the sure fire answer.

Justin Blackmon is the guy I want.

Justin Blackmon could be there at 5. There will be a lot of moves or attempted moves to get to the top 3 or 4 to get one of the top 2 QB's in the draft. Then you throw in Matt Kalil who is supposed to be the best offensive tackle since Orlando Pace, which grades him better than Jake Long and Joe Thomas, which is pretty high. Then you have Trent Richardson in the mix as well. Cleveland has 2 picks on their board, either Robert Griffen if they choose to move past Colt McCoy or they can go Trent Richardson if they choose to move Peyton Hillis which seems a logical move after all the drama last season between the 2 sides. That would leave you with the Vikings and they could go many ways. RB is definately not on their board with AP and Gerhart. The smart move for the Vikings would be on the D Line. If that plays out that would leave the Buccaneers an opportunity to draft Justin Blackmon.

I would really like to see the team go after some FA because this is a good FA class at CB and WR.

Would you give DeSean Jackson a look? I would be all over Vincent Jackson if he got out of SD.

Read that Mike Zimmer interviewed yesterday, Chudzinsky is interviewing today and they are in talks with the Packers to interview their offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and their QB coach Tom Clements. They are obviously seeing in to every possibility and exploring all options. Of the guys listed I think I like Chudzinsky best, not big on any of the Packers. Mike McCarthy calls and makes all final offensive decisions in Green Bay. How much credit is really Philbin's or Clements? Don't think I would want to go that route. So far I have them ranked:

Chudzinsky
Marty Schottenheimer
Mike Zimmer

Beyond that it doesn't matter anymore.

I'm not sold on Chudzinsky. He has only been an OC for three years, he has never been to the playoffs with those teams. His first year in Cleveland was pretty good, just as it was in Charlotte. But the following year in Cleveland pretty much sucked. Will the same happen in Charlotte? I know he's getting a lot of credit for Cam Newton, but not being there "behind the scenes" I don't know how much is do to Chud and how much is just the raw talent of the kid.

And while he has more OC experience than Raheem did DC experience, I'm thinking I'd be more comfortable with an established coach, preferably a disciplinarian.
