Anyone else uninspired by coaching search?

January 19, 2012 12:03 pm

If you want experience and discipline then you have to go with either Mike Sherman or Marty Schottenheimer. If you want discipline with upside then you want Mike Zimmer. I am not against any of those options. What this team needs is an oppfensive mind at OC to develop and bring along Josh Freeman and the rest of the offense. Would anyone welcome Todd Haley to be OC? He seems to be an offensive guru. I would be for interviewing him for OC. I know that will be decided on by the HC along with Dominik's approval. Any names that would work for DC?

Not sure I want Haley. He had a Hall of Fame quarterback who is one of the greatest of all-time that made him look good. Although I think he got a raw deal by Peoli's "big brother" crap.

My preference for a staff would be.

HC - Chud
OC - Clements
DC - Butch Davis

Butch Davis would make for a great defensive hire. I totally was not even thinking about him. He has turned out some great defensive units while at UNC and Miami, not to mention he has some NFL experience as well. I don't know enough about Tom Clements to be OC but the way I see it is Joe Philbin in all likelihood will take a HC job somewhere which would make Clements almost a lock to take over the OC job in Green Bay, not sure he would make a lateral move to another team, if he takes a OC job he stays in GB. Problem with Chudzinski is track record, what he does have is impressive though. I think Chudzinski or Zimmer for HC in my mind.

Just throwing a name out there to see what kind of reaction it gets. What about a guy like Mike Gundy?

What about a guy like Mike Gundy?
He's a man and he's older than 40. I'm ok with that!

But Chud got his start under Davis and was Davis' OC when he won the NC at Miami. Davis was a Super Bowl winning DC in Dallas before he left.

Davis, although not a great NFL head coach, could help Chud with some management things and such. I'd really like this staff.

Apparently Chip Kelley was headed to Tampa to be the next HC then backed out. Good riddance. That would have been an absolute horrible hire in my opinion. Chip Kelley doesn't have what it takes to be a winning HC in the NFL in my mind. I see how he runs all the gimmick style offense and little defense and that won't get it done in the NFL. Saban, Spurrier and Petrino have all tried it and none of them had much success and are no less than 5 times the coach that Kelley is.

TxBucsfan, I'm agreeing with you that Chip Kelly would not be a great coach for you guys.

Chip Kelley doesn't have what it takes to be a winning HC in the NFL in my mind.

I start to disagree with you on that point. Oregon runs a gimmick style offense so obviously he wont be running that style in the NFL. The thing of it is, if he is head coach and play caller, then that would be a problem. However if he is just a head coach then he wont be OC or DC. I highly doubt that the ownership will let him come in and make the NCAA Buccs. So I'm conceeding that to you that there are better options.

However to say that he doesnt have what it takes is a strech IMO. This is the coach that suspended Blount before the NCAA had to. This is the same coach that suspended Chris Harris (possibly their best defensive player). The guy will disipline his team.

Bottom line is- There are better options out there. However, if you hired him and got good cordinators underneith him, I think he would have success.  Either way I'm excited to see the young talent that the Buccs have come together.

Studly, what makes you think Kelly would have changed his O?  We don't even know if he knows any other O.  Plus people look at what Denver is running and might think they can make a coach like Kelly and his system work.  Most head coaches, especially a coach that is an offensive guy, tend to want to run certain systems.  THEIR systems, what ever that may be.  I can't imagine that Kelly would have come in and ran a pro set.

The Glazers are POed today but they should be kissing Kelly's ass for saving them from a franchise crippling mistake.  I can't even believe they were talking to Chip Kelly.  I've seen nothing that would make me think he would be a good head coach in the NFL.  I already felt they had no idea what they were doing but offering the job to Chip Kelly cements it.  They need to just turn this franchise over to football people and let them do their jobs.

TB Bishop, that is pretty much the vibe I have gotten from any comment about Chip Kelley is that he is nothing more than a good college coach. He can get by with the spread, gimmick system he uses in Eugene but that doesn't work in the NFL, ask Steve Spurrier or even Nick Saban how it went. I have more respect for Spurrier and Saban than I do Chip. If they want a college coach interview Mike Gundy. He is a no nonsense guy that takes absolutely nothing from anybody.

Kelly >>>>>>>> Petrino.

Saban and Spurrier are different types of coaches than Kelly. Spur-dog and Satan are a-holes who are feared by their players. Kelly's players respect him and would run through a wall for him. He would've been a great coach.

Kelly got his start at New Hampshire where he taught zone blocking inside of a power-I scheme. After his stud tailback graduated and pocket passer QB left, he was left with an athlete playing QB and no real way to fit him into what they were doing. So Kelly went out, learned about the spread and incorporated it into the offense to capitalize on his QBs speed and athleticism. He's run with it ever since because Oregon doesn't get the same recruits as Cal, UCLA, or USC. He puts his players in a position to succeed and his players play harder than anyone.

Kelly is a great coach and I'm pretty bummed he backed out.

Mike Gundy or Chud!!!

I have come across an interesting article that believes the current list of interviewers is just smoke and mirrors and the real hire is a mystery candidate. Which is pretty easy for me to believe when you look at the past, especially how they went through the Matt Cassell and Jay Cutler deal which turned in to a no deal that came completely off the radar. A new list of possible candidates has surfaced. Below is the list of possibilities that surfaced.

Bo Pelini
Les Miles
Mike Gundy
Chris Petersen
Bob Stoops
Steve Sarkisian
Mark Richt
Brian Billick
Russ Grimm

I will throw in another name: Herm Edwards; said he wasn't interested but they all say that and then later admit they are.

I would love to get Bo Pelini in Tampa. I can't speak for everyone else on this board but look at the D line that he has had on going in Lincoln. He won't tolerate poor effort regardless of who you are or what your name is. His coaching style gets criticized at the college level but these are pro athletes and I think he would do some good and most definately a hard hand. Bob Stoops absolutely not. His teams collapse under the big lights. Chris Petersen, has anybody done more with less than that guy has in his years at Boise St? His teams always show up regardless the opponent or how big the game is, one can say when the lights are the brightest his teams play their best. I also think Mark Richt would be worth an interview. He to me is a name that could be lurking in silence that might emmerge or has a possibility to emmerge.

The owners are committed to Freeman who is regressing mightily.
It's gonna be hard to find a quality coach who wants to come in with a liability at QB.

Bo Pelini --- I would like this. I think he's struggling bringing them back to the ole Nebraska but that's more because of what Callahan did, not Bo's ability as a coach.
Les Miles --- He was my top choice until the NCG debacle. Bleh.
Mike Gundy --- My new top choice. Chip Kelly with a history of loyalty (but not to a fault.... the "im a man speech", he benched that QB)
Chris Petersen --- Not leaving Boise.
Bob Stoops --- Elite talent, disappointing results. Great recruiter, ok coach.
Steve Sarkisian --- Very interesting. He's done a pretty good job at Washington. Good teacher, that's a fact.
Mark Richt --- I think he'd be a better pro coach than college, I really do. Known for very tough practices, interesting.
Brian Billick --- Bleh, no. yes he has a ring, but that was with the greatest defense of all time. How many QBs did he develop in Baltimore? None.
Russ Grimm --- No coordinator or head coaching experience. I'll pass.

I'm looking at all these options, second interviews, secret negotiations and just am not getting fired up by any of the names being floated. But then, I look at who has been hired by the other teams and I wouldn't want any of them. Is there really just no exciting coaching talent out there? We need a hire not just to fire up the team, but to get the fan base involved again.

Well the Tampa Bay Bucs went out and hired Greg Schiano. I know that he coached at Rutgers and was pretty successful there. There are some in the Rutger nation this is holding a parade for him as he leave town, with him at the head of the parade as if he is leaving as oppose to be thrown out of town.

I suppose you would have your supporters and those that would not support you no matter your achievements.

We now have a former college coach with some NFL experience.

I suppose he would be only as good as whom he surrounds himself with. Your defensive and offensive coordinators could make you a hero or a goat.

I understand that he signed a 5 year agreement. That is pretty good. I hope they allow him to complete the 5 years as it appears as if we are starting a coaching carousel here in Tampa Bay. We are looking a little like the Raiders with our coaching change.

You have to have more time than 3 years to develop a team with your players and coaches to run the system you would want to install.

You are also not gonna be in the upper echelon of winning during this coaching change. There will be a year or two where we might only win self respect.

If Greg do not win in his first two years there will be Buc fans on this very site calling for his ouster and bring in another coach that has more discipline or would understand today‘s players.

If this is the situation we will continue to be a mediocre team winning 4 games and getting excited when we win 6 games and think we have found the coaching savior.

Word is out that he has contacted Butch Davis to join his staff. It is reported in the Tampa Tribune, the capacity that makes most sense is DC and Assistant Head Coach. They have coached on the same staff at University of Miami 1999-2000 and have remained in contact over the years. I am all for getting it done immediately and not ask questions. Ask those later
