2013 Recruiting Prospects

January 11, 2012 12:59 am

I can't sleep and it's never too early to look at next year's recruiting prospects!  Obviously this will change a lot after the Spring Game but this recruiting season is winding down so many on the Husker staff are looking forward to next season already.  Here are some of the "stand-outs" for next year.  (All ratings 247Sports) Rivals won't do ratings for a while.

3-Star ATH Drake Martinez {Laguna Beach, CA} 6'2" 205 lbs (4.5 forty) (Drake is the brother of Taylor Martinez and plays running back and linebacker for the same high school.  Martinez once rushed for 300+ yards and 6 touchdowns this past season and could easily move to 4-star status if he has a good senior year.  Right now Nebraska has offered and UCLA isn't far behind)

4-Star LB Taco Charlton {Pickerington, OH} 6'6" 245 lbs (4.8 forty) (Charlton is a BEAST of a Linebacker and is the teammate of current Husker recruit Sebastian Smith.  Nebraska will continue to try to bolster the LB spot through future recruiting classes.  More guys of this build will be on our radar.  Right now it looks like an uphill battle against Michigan and Notre Dame.

Not-yet-rated DE Deon Hollins Jr. {Missouri City, Texas} 6'1" 220 lbs (Seems small for a DE but remember he is just a Junior in High School.  He should put on weight his senior year and improve on the field.  Hollins already has a hefty dose of offers including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and TCU.)

Not-yet-rated CB Priest Willis {Tempe, AZ} 6'2" 200 lbs (Willis is a grown man at 17 and already has a bunch of acolades to go on his mantle.  He will be a highly rated prospect next year.  Nebraska has offered as has hometown school ASU.  Other schools interested are UCLA, Arizona, Oklahoma State.)

4-Star LB Nick Ramirez {Lees Summit, MO} 6'2" 220 lbs (Ramirez is one of the top prospects on Nebraska's big board and holds offers from many prominent schools.  Our main competition will be Missouri and Purdue it seems)

Not-Yet-Rated ATH Courtney Love {Youngstown, OH} 6'1" 215 (Back at Bo and Beck's old stomping grounds we should have a good shot at this kid.  He is an ATH, but play LB and QB.  Not a normal combination, so he is definitely physical.  Main competition: Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Cincinatti

There are few others, but these are the guys that stuck out to me.  Once agian we are on the list for some top OL as well.

Those guys are a good place to start. The 2013 recruiting class will be important following this year's small class. A plus in the recruiting pitch will be fewer guys in the class ahead of you to clog the depth chart.

2013 Recruiting Prospects

Nebraska has now offered the top two Dual-Threat QBs in the nation over the past week for the 2013 class... JT Barrett and Malike Zaire... Nebraska also received its first commit for the class:

Tre'Vell Dixon 6'0" 180 lbs ATH (Baldwin, LA)

The kid is athletic and being recruited as either a Safety, CB or Quarterback.  He's highly touted but has other offers from ASU and Texas A&M.  He really likes and Nebraska and was born in Iowa.  Very good prospect, probably a 4-star recruit by the end of next season.  It will be a fight to hold onto his commitment though, especially if LSU comes calling (a la Deion Jones).  Nebraska has had trouble keeping kids from Louisiana before so it will be a fight but it's a great way to start the class.

2013 Recruiting Prospects

Ratings just came out on Rivals.com... the Rivals250 has both Tre'Vell Dixon and Josh Banderas on it (Dixon is a 3-Star according to 247 Sports and not yet rated by Scout)

In State Prospects for 2013

Josh Banderas - (4-Star OLB Lincoln, NE 6'2" 215 lbs) [4.65 forty]
Banderas will be attending Nebraska's Junior day Feb 18th... expect him to receive and accept an offer then.  He is the 185th ranked overall prospect according to Rivals.com (neither Scout nor 247Sports has a rating on him yet)

Michael Minter Jr - (Not Yet Rated RB/DB Lincoln, NE 6'1" 175 lbs)[4.5 forty] The son of former Husker and Carolina Panther great Mike Minter recently moved back to Nebraska so he could be closer to UNL... if we offer he will accept most likely (others intersted - South Carolina Kansas and Purdue).  Minter is coming to Nebraska's Junior day as well on Feb. 18.  Expect him to start out as a 3-star and move up from there.  GREAT safety prospect.

Freeman Coleman - (NYR DE/DT Omaha, NE 6'3" 260 lbs) Coleman has a nast meanstreak to him and I think he starts off at a 3-star prospect and probably stays there baring an amazing senior campaign.  If Nebraska offers I expect he will accept in a heartbeat.

Nick DeLuca - (NYR OLB Omaha, NE 6'3" 230 lbs)  He had 91 tackles as a Junior and seems to be a decent LB prospect from the state this season.  I think he probably ends up at ISU but if he shows well he could garner a Nebraska ofer

Bryce Sosnowski - (NYR DE Millard, NE 6'2" 225 lbs) Got a good motor and can play, would need to put on some serious weight to get a look at a scholarship though.  My mone is either on ISU or SDSU.

Sam Stoltenberg - (NYR FB Omaha, NE 6'1" 235 lbs) Stoltenberg is a viable FB recruit.  I could see him getting asked to join the preferred walk-ons ASAP.  He has a similar build and playing style as Tyler Legate.

Isaac Aakre - (NYR ATH Millard, NE 6'0" 180 lbs) [4.5 forty] Aakre is legit, good kid from a good family with all the athletic ability in the world.  I could see him starting out as a 2-star and working his way up.  Think Bronson Marsh from a few years ago.

Tyler Wrice - (NYR CB Papillion, NE 5'9" 175) [4.4 forty and 35 inch vert] I like this kid, he's fast and physical and has a lot of colleges taking an early look at him including BYU, Iowa, Missouri and Oregon State.  No offers yet, but they will come.

Bryce Sheard - (NYR WR Papillion, NE 6'3" 180) Sheard has great hands and good athletic ability.  It will depend on his 40 time though as he waits for offers.  Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa State have all shown interest.

Dillon Gartner - (NYR OG Gothenburg, NE 6'4" 282 lbs) Gartner might be one of the gems of instate talent this season.  He's already heard from places like Alabama, Miami, Iowa, Nebraska, TCU and Oregon.  I would expect him to be a 4-star OL by the time his senior year is over.

Matt Klein - (NYR DB Scottsbluff, NE 6'0" 175 lbs)

Good stuff Nut!

Looks like we have the potential to have a solid base of kids to kick things off with Dixon, Banderas, and Minter.  Hopefully we can get Banderas and Minter committed soon and ride the momentum!

GO BIG RED!
