insane how much credit is given to carnes for throwing one good pass in a spring game against the 3rd team defense. then, one of you says youve given up griping about cotton but are going to continue on martinez. what a whiner! martinez has 2 more yrs..good or bad, no telling how long cotton will be here if theres no pressure to fire him. anyone else notice this is the only job hes held for more than 2 seasons since the 1900's? martinez had one confusing OC on his way out for 2 years and 1 year under a first time OC, give the kid a break. the inexperience of our coaches is the on the field problems your seeing. all of you should be more concerned with the lack of developing talent in cotton and els' areas...no o-line or secondary and your lucky to have our current backfield to get us to 9-4
I am not going to jump on the fire Cotton bandwagon yet. I am going to sit and wait and see what happens with the recruiting season and then what Bo after. Watson did not go until recruiting was done so I am hoping that Bo is just focused on getting the right players and then will clean up the dead weight.
As far as having someone better than Taylor... let them step up and beat him. Its the only way Bo is going to replace Martinez. The problem is no one has that we know of. Bo has put his chips on Martinez, so who ever does it is going to have to do it in practice because they aren't going to see it in game time.
I've never been high on Cotton as a coach, but the guy is a heck of a recruiter... since he's been with Pelini these have been our O-Line classes:
2008: three 3-Star OL one 5-Star (Ricky Henry was the only one that played... Baker Steinkuhler moved to defense which I still think was a mistake.)
2009: four 3-star OL (Sirles and Qvale among them)
2010: two 4-star and one 3-star (Hardrick and Rodriquez)
2011: three 4-star and one 3-star (Tyler Moore, Ryne Reeves and Zach Sterup. Givens Mordi Price was only 17 and has recently blossomed I've heard)
2012: 4-Star Paul Thurston, and possibly a 5-Star in Andrus Peat and possibly another 4-star in Evan Goodman
He can recruit but can he coach? If our o-line doesn't dominate this season after the past two stellar recruiting classes (especially if we add Peat to the mix) then the answer has to be no.
Nut...He is the O-line coach obviously but how many of these guys has he actually been the "lead recruiter" on? Just because you coach one position doesn't necessarily mean you aren't recruiting other positions correct?
I also wouldn't go to the trouble to name all the 3-stars on the list (unless one happens to be a breakout stud). Quite frankly I EXPECT all of our recruits to be at least 3 stars.
2008 - he brought in all of them plus Sean Fisher and Sam Cotton (duh)
2009 - he brought in all of them plus Chris Williams (4-Star LB that ended up with a career ending knee injury his RS year)
2010 - he brought in all of them plus Tobi Okuyemi
2011 - he brought in all of them
2012 - he brought in Thurston
so yeah he was the lead guy for all of them plus a few others. I'm not trying to defend the guy because I do think his o-line's have been way below par but he is a good recruiter. For what it's worth it looks like Ron Brown is the lead recruiter for Andrus Peat.
Kinda hard to step up when coaches wont give you mop up duty.... I'm sorry the gap isn't that wide between tmart and carnes. As everyone has already said Bo has his chips and everything on tmart. We had ample chance to see carnes this year even if it's mop up duty you can gain some experience and get them some real game time snaps atleast to build depth. Just remember the ganz situation no one knew much about him game time wise but boy did turn out ok. I know if we had him in 09 things would have been different. I know I'm the minority on this but we need a solid qb to get to next level open competition wouldn't hurt.
Thanks Nut, yeah I suppose he's better than I thought with regards to recruiting...now it's time for that to translate to dominant O-lines on the field!
Speaking of Peat man I hope we get him. That will certainly make this class look a lot better. Then we just gotta make sure the coaching staff doesn't decide to move him to the D-line!
If you would have asked me that a month ago I would say news is good... now i'm not so sure. He took a visit to UCLA this past weekend and loved it, though I don't think he really thinks he will go there he did comment on the weather being nice which is an obvious down side to Lincoln. He will visit Rutgers this weekend and then choose between Baylor, Notre Dame and Arizona for his next visit.
Gunner Kiel decommitted from LSU and committed to Notre Dame recently which will actually be a positive for Nebraska as Notre Dame would then be looking to put Fuller at WR (he wants to play quarterback). I would say the main competition is between UCLA and Rutgers on him, his last visit will probably be to Notre Dame but once they tell him Kiel committed and is an early enrolly he won't go there.
If I were forced to make a prediction right now I think Rutgers leads the pack followed by us and UCLA... we need to make up ground quick if we want him and I think Bo has already used his in-home visit with him.
I have a feeling that rutgers might win this race against us again. Keeping my fingers crossed he has tremendous speed n agility the army game used him as a Wr so we couldnt see him as a qb in that game. I just hope we get him and yea I made a typo I meant we gave an offer to that qb form rider high
