Packers vs Giants: Playoff Version

January 15, 2012 1:56 am

The wait is over.  15-1 now means nothing except that the game is at Lambeau and we are hosting the Giants who are the lowest seed left in the NFC this week.

Notes and Tidbits:

* This marks the fifth time in franchise history that the Packers have faced the Giants during the regular season and the playoffs in the same season, with the other instances coming in 1938, 1944, 1961 and 2007

*Two of the most venerable franchises in professional football history, the Packers and Giants have combined for 20 championships. Green Bay ranks No. 1 among all NFL franchises with 13 titles, while New York checks in at No. 3 with seven championships

*Since the advent of free agency in 1993, there has been only one season (1999) that didn’t include either the Packers or Giants in the playoffs. Since 2006, Green Bay ranks No. 1 in the NFC in regular-season winning percentage (.656, 63-33), while New York checks in at No. 3 in the conference (.594, 57-39) behind only New Orleans (.646, 62-34).

*Green Bay holds a 31-23-2 edge in the all-time series, which includes a 4-2 postseason record. The teams first met in 1928 in New York.

*Green Bay’s 27th postseason berth in team history marks the franchise’s 14th appearance in the last 19 seasons and the fourth berth in the past five seasons under Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

*Green Bay’s 27 playoff appearances rank tied for No. 3 in NFL history behind only the N.Y. Giants (31) and Dallas (30).

*The Packers are the only NFC team to make four playoff appearances in the last five seasons.

*Since the NFL went to a 12-team playoff format in 1990, the Packers have had a first-round bye on three other occasions (No. 1 seed in 1996, No. 2 seed in 1997 and 2007). Green Bay is 3-0 in the Divisional round coming off a first-round bye.

  • Mike McCarthy: 67-35-0, .657, (incl. 5-2 postseason); 6th NFL season
  • Tom Coughlin: 151-121-0, .555 (incl. 9-7 postseason); 16th NFL season (8th with Giants)
  • Head to Head: McCarthy 3-1
  • vs. Opponent: McCarthy 3-1 vs. Giants; Coughlin 2-5 vs. Packers

LAST MEETING, IN GREEN BAY

  • Dec. 26, 2010, at Lambeau Field; Packers won, 45-17
  • QB Aaron Rodgers returned after missing the previous game (concussion) to throw for 404 yards and four TDs.
  • A pair of Green Bay WRs cleared the 100-yard mark, withGreg Jennings leading the way (7-142). Jordy Nelsonadded 124 yards on four grabs, highlighted by an 80-yard TD catch in the first quarter.
  • FB John Kuhn scored a career-high three TDs, rushing for two and catching a TD pass.
  • Green Bay’s defense recorded a season-high six takeaways, including four interceptions of Giants QB Eli Manning. The takeaway total matched the best mark under Head Coach Mike McCarthy (six at Chicago, Dec. 31, 2006).

Packers vs Giants: Playoff Version

January 15, 2012 2:16 am

Yesterday we saw the following:

Drew Brees went out throwing with 40 completions in 63 attempts for 4 TD's and 2 picks and 462 yards.

Alex Smith was decently efficient with 24 completions in 42 attempts for 299 yards and 3 TD's.  Most importantly Zero picks.

Tom Brady made a statement with his 26 completions in 34 attempts for 363 yards, 6 TD's and 1 pick.

I expect to see #12 remind everyone why he's been the front runner for MVP this season.  Look for the offense as a whole to do it's part also.

For the season Aaron Rodgers is averaging 310 yards and 3 TD's per game.  6 picks through 15 games.

Great start to your thread Arasmis ... and thank you for all the information, it really creates a better and clearer understanding of where the Packers have come from. It also helps my understanding of football a lot :)

What do you think we'll see from the Packers' defense today? Will that week of rest make a difference?

The Saints lost because the 49ers had a superior defense
that Drew Brees had not seen in a long time. The 49ers forced him to make bad
decisions and they capitalized on the turnovers.

Aaron Rodgers does not throw INTS very often 6 this year and
is very mobile when needed. The Packers got their book ends back and hopefully
are 100% Chad Clifton and Brian Bulaga.

Gregg Jennings is back,

Some random notes, The 49ers won the team that past on
Rodgers his child hood favorite, if he wind today he gets to prove why they
chose wrong.

Ryan Grant is a cast off from the Giants and hopefully has a
great game, he has through out his career gotten better in the post season and
this could be his last shot at the ring.

And Finally like Jennings already mentioned it was the
Giants who came into Green Bay and beat them last time we had home field
advantage. Super excited about this one. Jermicahel Finnley needs to catch the
ball today as well. Limit the drops, by the receiver corps, give Rodgers time
and this should end in our favor.

Even made the Alton Brown Homemade soft Pretzels.

GO PACK GO!!!

Good Morning Baby.  You're up early today!

What do you think we'll see from the Packers' defense today? Will that week of rest make a difference?

Definitely the question marks are on the defense side today.  Although the Giants have a very good Defensive Line I don't expect them to stop Rodgers and the offense.  It sounds like the Giants will try and man-up on the GB receivers like the Chiefs did.  If we see that I expect a big day out of Finley, Driver, and Jennings with slants and quick passes underneath.  Once that works I expect Jordy Nelson to get some looks deep.

On Defense I'm concerned about the front 3 of the Packers defensive line.  B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, and Howard Green must generate some organic pass rush and collapse the pocket on Eli Manning and they can't allow the Giants to generate some momentum running the ball.  Most concerning to me is the ability of teams to run outside the tackles on the outside linebackers.  Clay Matthews is susceptible to running too far up field and creating a lane for a running back behind him.  His opposite number is currently Erik Walden, but, he has not played well and might be replaced by Zombo or Brad Jones.  There has been very little production on that side and that needs to change.

Good Morning Baby.  You're up early today!

LOL Arasmis ... I'm usually up by around 5am and today was a later morning, I think I actually got out of bed by about 8:30 :)

Great thoughts on the team and the players, thank you :)
It's really helpful to me (and my football education) to read this kind of information. :)

Was there any scuttlebutt out of the GB practices this week about any changes; major or minor, in the defense?

Good morning all!

Well it looks like a great day for football with mid twenties for temps along with sun and mild winds, hence little effect on any aspect of anyone's game.

Focus, focus , focus. Details, details, details..... Both teams are obviously coached well and will be ready. You just have to expect a nerve wracking day for us as fans and hope we come out on top.

 Lets GO PACK GO!!!!

I agree about the nerve wracking day, GBay.  Definitely expect a game like the 49ers/Saints rather than the blow out in the AFC game last night.

Baby, other than the team being as healthy as it's been since the beginning of the season I don't think anything major regarding the players is cooking.  There shouldn't be too many excuses if the Packers lose.  Of course I'll reserve the right to complain should it fit my mood later!  Wink

We should keep a running tally on the food being spread out!

I think we had some home-made Pretzels mentioned above.

Taco Dip (Mine) with some Spotted Cow to wash it down.

I dont think we've even seen a minus wind chill around here. It' been 30 to 55 degrees for for the most part where it should have been zero to minus whatever...haven't seen anything like it for such a extended period of time.

No kidding.  Half way through Janurary and I've only had to shovel once this winter.

At least we finally have some snow on the ground so the kids can go sledding and get out of the house.

We have about 1-2 feet of snow but it's ridiculously cold today. The temperatures have been going up and down like crazy too ... it's expected to get warmer again (above 0C) by mid-week. That will suit me because I really don't like the cold much. Give me lots of snow but milder temps and I'm happy :)

I've shoveled our deck which is about 50 feet long and 10 feet wide everyday since 2 weeks before Xmas. I use it to practice Tai Chi on so I have to keep it clear :)

I forgot all about the food part.

Rats ... Um I'm going to say that probably I'll snack on veggies and dip and cut up fruit. That doesn't sound very snacky does it ... Okay I'll throw in a bowl of Cheesies and some Coors Light. There ... that's my party :)

Well, it's 70 and sunny here in South Florida. I see some kids shoveling sand on the beach, but that's about it.

I'm doing my part down here to cheer for the Packers. I don't even bother with food till after the game because it will only upset my stomach. I do have a case of Miller Light in the fridge. It's the only Wisconsin beer that I can get down here.

I am really, really looking for the Pack to play with a lot of passion and determination today for Coach Philbin. I want to see the defense step up and show that they can play better than the Giants D.

3 1/2 hours and counting. Good luck fellow Packers fans and curses to the Giants.

Go Packers!

It's a good thing the game is being played in GB, the Giants play better on the road.

"I am really, really looking for the Pack to play with a lot of passion and determination today for Coach Philbin."

In case anyone does not know, the coach's son died because he could not face what he done, 2 counts of rape. Whatever house hold coach Philbin is running created the atmosphere for his son to do what he did.

15-2 is a hard way to end a season.

How nice for you Poke!! What's the weather like and are you getting brown? :)

I think I'd almost be a bit divided ... stay in to watch the game or go out to enjoy the sun :)

Spytheweb what gives you right to stand in judgement of Michael Philbin or to assume you know why he did what he did? No one can possibly have any idea what was going through that young man's mind when that incident took place. The environment that he grew up in could have had nothing to do with whatever compelled him to act out and making a statement like you did shows appalling ignorance on your part.

This thread is not the appropriate place to introduce that topic or to make those kinds of comments .

Idiot.

I sure hope the Giants have a better quality of fans than you ... because you reflect very poorly on the Giants fanbase.
