There comes a point when fans can be TOO supportive. I contend that this group of Tarheel players aren't the only ones sleepwalking through this season. It seems to me on various message boards that I've been to that UNC fans are also asleep.
What's the deal guys? Weren't we supposed to be the favorites this year? Weren't we Preseason #1? Wasn't there talk of possibly going undefeated and maybe having one of our best seasons ever?
If you take the expectations of each school and compare it to the results I'd say that we are BY FAR the most disappointing college basketball team so far this year.
WHY ARE MORE PEOPLE NOT UPSET? WHERE IS THE OUTCRY??
We should at least demand effort. And we weren't given an ounce of effort in that disgraceful loss to Florida State. We showed zero heart, zero passion. But that's how we have played all season.
I can accept not being as talented as we had hoped. That happens. Maybe we just aren't very good. But what I can't accept is that our players have given up. It's as if they realized that they can't just show up and win with hype and that it actually takes effort, but they aren't willing to do that. Many of the guys on this team seem to already have one foot in the NBA. There is no urgency, no focus. They aren't "in the moment" at any time during the games this year. It's very upsetting to me.
And I blame a lot of it on Roy. I think the difference between Roy & Coach K is that Roy is simply not very demanding of his players. He allows complacency to exist because he is too laid back. There is NO WAY a Coach K team would EVER allow his team to come out after being completely embarrassed in the first half only to be more greatly embarrassed in the 2nd half. NO FREAKING WAY!!! He would have chewed their butts in the locker room and they would have come out blazing in the 2nd half, slapping the floor, diving for loose balls, moving everywhere on defense.
But not this team. Nope. They showed they are a bunch of lazy cowards.
Not one player on this team has been consistent this year. Other than a few new post moves by John Henson, there is not a single aspect of ANY returning player that has improved since last season. In fact, in most cases they have digressed. Marshall is sloppy and has an even worse outside shot now. Barnes is even more timid and unwilling to drive to the bucket. He's a glorified jump shooter. Strickland is even more of a waste of space. Henson & Zeller should be more dominant as upper classmen, but have been pushed around by younger players all season.
And EVERY player has gotten worse on the defensive end this year. Unfortunately the freshman have all been huge disappointments too. So much for highly ranked recruits.
We have not had an impressive game yet. The games we have won have been against patsies. And we've lost every game that we've been challenged. That's what teams with no heart do. They are all playing for themselves. There is no team unity or togetherness. They play as if they all just met 5 minutes before the game started. There is no chemistry.
This team is the epitomy of a team simply going through the motions without any apparent goal that they are striving after.
We play a desperate Virginia Tech team at their place in a couple days. Virginia Tech is hungry for their first conference win of the season. And they smell blood after watching UNC the other day. I guarantee the Hokies are going to be playing with their hearts on their sleeve.
Some things in sports are way too easy to predict. Knowing what I know about these UNC players and Roy Williams, I know that they aren't putting in the time or the effort to improve. I know that they can't win if the other team is strongly motivated. They can only win games when "going through the motions" will be good enough.
I GUARANTEE that the Heels will lose to the Hokies. How do I know? Simple. This team is completely void of heart. After the embarrassment of their last game you would think that they would want nothing more than to redeem themselves and their fans in their next game. But they simply don't care. They have checked out.
I don't think we were nearly as talented as we all though. But regardless, the fact that we aren't even trying is what really bothers me. After watching the preseason #1 team get crushed by 33 points and not even be bothered by it....well....I'll never be able to respect UNC or Roy Williams again. They lost my trust.
We are all witnessing the most disappointing season in North Carolina Tarheels history.
My 2 cents:
We will beat up on V Tech tomorrow night. To be honest, and this may sound odd, but I look at that Florida State embarrassment as a blessing in disguise. Sometimes a great team needs to get whooped to have a fire lit within. I just dont see too many technical issues with this team..Yeah, free throw shooting needs work..And perimeter defense..(Every team in the nation has some flaws).. But the talent and depth is there, and my only problem with that loss was the effort. They played with no intensity. That can be fixed. I think guys like Henson, Zeller, and Barnes actually care a lot.. I dont see them as guys thinking about the NBA.. If that was the case, they would have left after last season. They came back to win a title. Im sure their pride will kick in.. Im very sure they are not happy about that ugly loss. Now Im not quite sure why they have been sleepwalking so far, which is actually one thing Shotkart was right about, but I believe they can turn on the switch to dominate mode. I will make a comparison to MMA.. One of my favorite fighters, Forrest Griffin, is known as a slow starter, and admits that he gets going in fights after he gets punched in the face a few times.. Our boys took one on the chin Saturday, and I believe that will get them going. V Tech is in for a rude awakening. UNC: 91 V Tech: 70.
It's times like these that the anonymity of the internet pisses me off, because if these comments were being made face to face, I could at least try to smack the stupid out of you...
