Bye Bye Brent.

January 24, 2012 7:55 pm

What does everyone think of them hiring this Kish guy from Mike's old staff at AZ? I'm a little put off. I thought Stoops might use this as an opportunity to bring in some new blood / new thinking. I really hope he does a better job than he did at AZ. That was some horrible defense! I know that they didnt get the kind of talent that OU gets in AZ but his defense was 62nd in the country against the run!

I was really hoping for some hungry young assistant to take the LB coaching job . That or hire someone who has had great success with LB's in the past. This guy is neither. I don't want to get down on him before we see what he can do but it seems like a comfort hire for Mike. This guy knows his scheme and has recruiting ties to the West coast. Oh well I guess only time will tell. At least we didn't raid Boise's staff like every other team in the country has done recently ;-)

I have to admit, of the 4 "potential" candidates Kish was my least wanted. I havent been impressed with the defense at Arizona in recent years. I sure hope he proves me wrong but not real fond of the hiring either.

I guess I am not as convinced as most when it comes to Mike Stoops as a DC.  AZ ranked 111th against the pass, 62nd against the run, and 107th overall on defense.  That does not sound like a DC with credentials..  And to top it off bringing in the actual DC for AZ to be a linebackers coach....  This is crazy... I am ready for a change, but wow, this is ridiculous.  What happened to the PSU linebackers coach, and others??  Great... so next year we score 40 points a game and give up 45...  More misuse of LB's and DE's...  ???

That is definitely a concern OSU.... Has the game in the past 8-10 years passed up the defensive scheme of the Stoops boys? The game has really evolved dramatically in the past 15 years .... Or do you say... Stoops didnt handle the defense at Arizona because he was HC but now that he is back as DC he will be greatness again? Great coordinators dont always make great hc's and the coordinators they hire dont always pan out either. Brian Billick was offensive guru at Minnesota. Gets head gig with Baltimore Ravens and never fields a decent offense.  Wade Phillips great DC but when he was HC Dallas defenses were generally the problem not the offense.

Why wouldnt lil Stoops hire a guy who can run his exact scheme however? So is the scheme faulty or is the problem the guy calling the plays?

Ithink we should give Mike a chance, he did pretty well the first time and Arizona ain't OU!! Everybody couldn't wait to get him back, now all these doubts......I may go crazy!!

Bud man, gotta ask the questions...  I hope Mike brings back the OU Defensive glory, and Kish brings us back the Linebacker U noteriety.  Got to get a defense that is consistant and an offense that is also consistant.  Three times or more last year both were inconsistant on the same day...  If Mike can give us a game in and game out  consistancy on D, then we can accept errors by LJ and win all games...  But first, we have to get some bigger guys at the LB positions, especially MLB...  Otherwise, teams with Weeden types will kill us...

I dont know if we need bigger MLB's but we definitely need bigger DL if we want to play super small in the back 7. Use big DL to keep the OL off the LB's.

I am excited about Stoops too but there are definitely concerns. Arizona had some decent defenses under Mike's regime up until they bottomed out. I think he will prove to be an inspiring, intense coordinator. Venables showed some fire, Stoops will show big fire and hopefully the players play with more fire under Stoops.

However, I am somewhat surprised he did not wait for a call from Coach Snyder.  He would have been a coach in waiting, while the Clemson deal could be another wait 13 years.

The irony, irony of it all.  He probably didn't want the KState job and have to face Stoops every year.  So, he goes to Clemson where he's as far away from the Big12 as can be.  He's probably thinking, "The only way I'll face OU is in a bowl game."

Now, I'm hearing or seeing rumors that Clemson could join the Big12?  How hilarious would that be if it came to pass?  Welcome back to the Big12, Venebles.....time to get your butt handed to you, anyway.....lol.

I understand Mike Stoops is a defensive minded guy.  OU's D should be a top 10 this year, at worst.  When you have to coach the whole team, you can't put as much time into what you're best at and have that be as successful when it was your lone assignment.  Look at Weiss, Todd Haley, other Coordinators that have made the jump to HC and try to hang on to their "sweet" role.

I'm excited for Sooner football this year.  More so, than Dallas Cowboys football.  Maybe Dallas can draft Landry Jones next year?  Maybe not.
